This movie, and cast molded my understanding of comedy and my own humanity. A talented mixed ethnicity cast, and a commentary that, at the time, was obscene is still considered “edgy” today.

There was criticism for Mel Brooks's movies back when they were made. In fact, I've heard that when asked if he thought 'Blazing Saddles' could be made today he said "Well we couldn't make it back then but we made it anyway." Either way I think it's a good thing we're considering how appropriate or offensive a joke might be to other people, but I still find Mel Brooks's movies hilarious - always have, always will.

Mel Brooks movies are self-effacing but the cast is always a pastiche of diversity. My hope is that the cast was able to give representation authentically with the ability to laugh at themselves instead of just being paid to be laughed at. It would be offensive to deny their agency and demonstrate a naievete about the context of it's time if one were to speak on their behalf in feigned offense. It also deprives them the ability to be proud of their work. History of the World Part 1 is an enduring classic that makes history accessible to people who might not be exposed to it, otherwise. People should stop conflating their politics with shit-tier art criticism.

When an military leader was hailed by the senate and allowed to enter Rome for a triumphal procession, he was always trailed by a servant who whispered in his ear “remember you are mortal!” so as not to let the regalia of the procession go to his head.
