NORTHERN ONTARIO TRAVELS: 1972 Eldorado on the Trans-Canada Adventure Trail

- There's a magic to northern Ontario that keeps me coming back. This time I wanted to ride a short section of the Trans-Canada Adventure Trail between Capreol and Shining Tree. And the bike? My mostly trustworthy 1972 Moto Guzzi Eldorado. How would the old girl fare on more narrow gravel roads with potholes and embedded rocks? She may not be an adventure bike, but riding her anywhere is always an adventure.
Ah, the adventures of youth. Thank you for suffering for me. I most happily would trade my horrific traffic with it's aggressive tailgaters for your beautiful water and trees and hail. Happiness to you Nick from this 82 year old biker in Richmond, Virginia, USA.
You're living the motorcyclist dream my friend. Glorious. And I love how the old Eldorado just keeps plodding along.
Great ride, thanks for taking us along.
Beautiful roads..beautiful autumnal colours ... and the journey was so peaceful and enjoyable ....life is good
Thanks for sharing !!
Your strength and determination are out of this world
So beautiful in the fall. Epic is the only word. Well, and fabulous.
Thanks MS. It was fun, if chilly.
Beautiful content pleasure to watch
Thank you.😀
Great adventure video!
Love the V twin soundtrack. Makes me want to get out on the California but I am waiting for new tyres.
Good thing you were riding a nice modern lightweight adventure bike!
The Eldorado's low centre of gravity helps, but at over 500lbs, she can be a bit of a handful. 😄
I love the mechanical Symphony coming from that Guzzi. It is so soothing and relaxing just listening to that engine purr. The scenery and the story was also fantastic. Thank you Nick.
Thanks Joe. I think I finally have a sound recording sorted on my Go Pro. Glad the results work for you.
I reckon there would some lovely fish in that river
GUZZISTI NOMADS ADMIRE!!!! EXCELLENT!!!!
Loop frames are great! Riding roads like these are some of my best memories. Thanks!
Nick you are a trooper! Quite the road without any companions to help out if disaster struck. The old Guzzi is sure sounding great. It will soon be time for a winter rest for it. Happy trails!
Thanks Ron. Unwise maybe, but happy 😄
Epic ride! Love these adventure rides on the Eldorado. Thank you.
I enjoy your videos. Showing us the amazing views. And that one doesn't need these modern so called adventure bikes. I have fun on my triumph t100. It takes me everywhere i want to go ..just at a slower pace 😊
Thanks Graham. I can't see the point in racing around. Plenty of fun to be had manhandling a regular bike on rough roads.
Wonderful video sir . Glad you and the guzzi didn't in counter any serious damage
Some beautiful scenery and some tough riding conditions. Glad to see the old Eldorado behaving so well. Thanks for suffering for our benefit.

Haha. Thanks Bob.
Hi Nick I do the same you do, ride a 2007 Moto Guzzi Breva 750 on paved roads but when I ride on damaged paved roads (of which we have plenty) I do it on my DR650 which also use on unpaved roads, while you have to deal with very cold days at this time of the year, I deal with 40 + Celsius in the summer, greetings from an 81 yrs old lonely riderj at the Yucatan Peninsula.
I hope I'm still as mobile at 81. Good for you. Stay well. Ride safely. 😀
Same bike, same age, same type of roads and even the tries look the same. Greatings from Finland.
Great, indestructable bikes. Safe travels Michael.
Hello Nick, great film as always. As an Australian I’m astounded and amazed by the amount of water you have there. It would be wonderful to have that amount around you. I’m also in the process of purchasing my 4th Guzzi, an 08 ev Cali. I’m like a kid waiting for Christmas, can’t wait to pick it up. Please keep up the great work, I enjoy your rides around amazing Canada. Cheers .
Yep, plenty of water in Ontario. Over 250,000 lakes + rivers. You'd be hard-pressed to die of thirst here. Good luck with the Cali. Very pretty. Thanks.
Perfect
This reminds me I have to step up my clothing technology with heated underwear and heated vest.
Well sir, I’m 76 next month. Have a Guzzi Breva 1100 and a BMW K100rs 16v which will be sold soon as I’m purchasing one of those new CFMoto450MT to get back to touring with intent. 👌🏻👍🏻
Good for you. Stay well. Enjoy life. 😃
Thank you for your always fun videos.
Watching this video really encouraged me, because I also enjoy riding on gravel roads and forest roads on my old motorcycles. My country is not as big as Canada, but I plan to continue traveling on back roads by motorcycle.
Also, I'm looking forward to the publication of your next book.
Thanks. Riding at a slower pace has many benefits and those unpaved roads tend to go to or through the best places. I'm working on a new book as we speak. Perhaps before Christmas if I keep at it. Thanks for your interest and support. Ride safely. N.
Wow that was a scary moment with that truck barreling down on you in the loose gravel. Very glad you are ok Nick.
Thanks for the ride along. I always appreciate your videos.
TT
@@tinytim9413 Thanks TT. It happened so fast I didn't even had time to get scared. Close thing though...
In a strange circumstance i'm exactly 37 .. Glad you are ok after that minor bike drop. Enjoy the autumn. I am waiting for my new bike to be registered but it's been a week.. The autumn is now forever.
Gravity has a way of being persistent 😂😂
Beautiful ride as always Nick! The Eldorado though has a ticking sound I haven’t heard before
@@DeEnigeEchteEmielvg loud tappets, accentuated by the way the camera interprets sound.
I’m curious about the right side engine shot at 23:54, Nick. There is a loop of rubber hose coming out of the crankcase then right back in. This feature is absent on my Ambo, so I wondered about it. Perhaps it’s a disused oil cooler take-off?
Hi Phil. There used to be an add-on oil filter there. The bracket failed so I removed it and got my local hydraulic supply shop to make me some lines. I didn't want to fool around inside the sump where the previous owner had done some re-routing. It's been fine for almost 100,000 miles like that so I won't be changing it.😁
As a 72 year old rider I have to ask: Why no heated jacket liners? I hate the cold but love riding in it, but not without my trust-worthy Gerbing heated gear. Great video; inspiring!
I'm just cheap and am lucky enough to be fairly resistant to the cold. We're insulated from the world by too much technology as it is. Sometimes it's actually valuable to experience the 'real' world.
Stai bene e guida in sicurezza.
Grazie Nick al prossimo video ciao..
Good life 👍🙂
Here I go again. Maybe a heated jacket will transform autumn and spring rides…? It did for me😀
Maybe one day, when I get old. 😄🤪
Sometimes its harder to turn around and go back, then follow your instinct and push on though.....Good call....
After over 50 years of riding, I cannot agree with you more!
Itchy Boots would be jealous.
@@1newbert thanks, but we're not even remotely in the same league. She's wonderful.
@@nick949eldo she would appreciate your choice of day 2 route. 👍

Now THIS is my style of touring! Dirt road, slow, old bike and mediative!!
Mine too 😁. Thanks.
I’m 68 with congestive heart failure. When I’m considering routes, the criteria that puts some limits my desire for adventure is simply that I don’t want to end up in one of those stories in a small local news paper. You know, the story about the tourist that all the locals dismiss with the quip, “what an idiot”. The fear of being the subject of one of those stories seems to help limit my stupidity :)
@@clarson2916 that's too bad, but you're wise the recognize your limitations. Look after yourself, ride safely and leave the stupid stuff to those of us who don't know any better. Best wishes. Nick.
@@nick949eldo I was referring to when you turned around at the steep rock shelf… 😂🤣. It’s times like that I think of ending up in one of those stories :)
Everything else you’re doing seems pretty reasonable 👍. You and I are cut from the same cloth, but I do ride an old Honda, so that means I have a little more common sense than you do :)
True ADVing. Love it. What tyres are you running?
@@WnRn_ cheap ones. I'd have been just as happy on street tires.
@@nick949eldo hahahaha I hear ya about cheap. what brand are they
:)
@@WnRn_ Duro and Shinko.
@@nick949eldo Cheers for that mate.
Hey Nick! Have you considered posting the gps route in the description? I’d love to ride this route.
@@GrahamSmith1523 Hi Graham. Search google for the TCAT. My route from Capreol to Shining Tree was just a tiny part of the Gpx file.
Great ride. Where can I get the GPX file for the Trans-Canada Adventure Trail? Thanks
I just searched Google, although the Gravel Travel web site has the latest version (for a donation).
Yours is either the happiest 1972 Eldorado on the planet, or the most miserable. 😅
Happiest, I hope, but I could be that I'm deluding myself.😄
