    North 100 Showdown is the best MTG content out right now. Not enough people playing this format. Regarding the Mox conversation at the beginning, it has felt like the show has primarily featured aggro and midrange piles a lot recently. I'd love some more control and combo. But then again, I could just watch Wheeler play Eggs all day

    Is there some reason that Wheeler was able to cast Molten Collapse at the end of Serge's turn? I noticed that it was a sorcery while reading it on the card reader and was confused.
    Was it just a mistake because its a new card?

    • @fairygoodmuller8065
      @fairygoodmuller8065 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      so wheeler cast terminate on serge's start of combat killing the glorybringer, then takes 3. serge passes turn. wheeler draws molten collapse, fetches and kills scooze and clue main phase.

    Does Serge not have priority when Minsc hits the board before Wheeler destroys it?

    • @TypeVariable
      @TypeVariable ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you're asking here, Serge passes priority after casting Minsc because there aren't any game actions he can take, Wheeler casts an instant to remove Minsc when he gets priority after the Minsc ETB trigger (create hamster) goes on the stack.

    I hate to be "that graphic designer" who nitpicks things like this that is almost not worth a mention, but the font used for the deck names for the thumbnails in this series has a really weird default "A-Y-A" kerning to it, theres so much air in between those letters in NAYA. It has slightly bugged me and I wouldn't mention it if I didn't know Graham also was a font nerd. (Kinda weird since for the rest of the letters seem completely fine)(sorry if this is annoying 😔)

    Feels like the eternal witness attack in game 1 was a bit too aggressive even if it didn’t change things. Think you are fine with Boo trading for the adventurer and if it doesn’t trade you are left with the extra body to fight for initiative/monarch which might have been a big deal if wheeler had one more removal spell 🤷‍♂️

    • @Grimhortonz
      @Grimhortonz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like attacking with boo gives you initiative no matter what, it attacks as a 5/5 trample cause of hierarch so the attack was 100% incorrect with witness.

    I do not play 1v1 formats very much except for historic brawl on Arena, but I watch these videos and find myself entertained nonetheless. However, I have to be honest in saying that high-powered 1v1 formats do not seem all that engaging to me. In fact they seem to be rather 1-note in that games tend to play out in one of only a few ways every single time. The typical rhythm of Highlander, and I would extrapolate to other "non-rotating formats" such as vintage and modern (and this applies to historic brawl as well, which is why I am quickly losing my fondness for it) is Threat-Answer-Threat-Answer-Threat-Answer, and the moment this repetitious balance is broken the game is essentially over due to the incredible speed at which threats end the game in these formats. If one player fails to answer a threat, even a simple one-drop (Looking at you, naughty monkey), that player is almost certain to lose the game within only a turn cycle or two, or at the very least fall irreversibly far behind, with very little chance of maneuvering their way out of it.
    And due to the sheer amount of threatening permanents (especially creatures) that accrue essentially endless value beginning the very same turn they are played, there is enough redundancy that it is very likely any player with threat on board, capable of stockpiling resources without fear of losing their position in the lead, will draw into even more threats while their unlucky opponent is scrambling for a response to the first problem, in essence creating an inevitable cascade wherein defeat is assured by only the slightest margin of error or misfortune. Assuming the decks are evenly matched and the two players draw equivalently powerful hands, the game often seems to just come down to who goes first- essentially a coin flip. And in games where the balance is not so perfect- well I think you can imagine the problems with that.
    Slower and lower powered formats mitigate this issue by increasing the length of games, and thus increasing the number of opportunities players have to recover from a mistake or bad draw. Formats like pauper and commander will go on for many more turns on average than a game of legacy, Canadian Highlander, or Modern, which I think is overall a positive. Not only is there less shuffling and wasted time with administration and restarting games, as well as less pressure to keep fast hands, thus decreasing mulligans and increasing playtime, but it also reduces the impact of going first and of getting lucky card draws throughout the game. When a single efficient threat played on curve is enough to single-handedly win the game without additional support or synergy or planning, the games just boil down to who gets lucky and draws a threat that cant be answered first. Players may as well speed up the game by revealing their removal and threats in hand at the start and whoever has more can be declared the winner.
    With how many cards WOTC is printing with "modern" design sensibilities of efficiency and impact bundled together regardless of mana cost (power creep), even the singleton nature of EDH is not enough to stem the flow of one-sided games where the only interest comes from basically seeing what artwork will be on this generic creature that kills my opponent or generic kill spell that saves me from death for a turn. And it is really a shame because formats like EDH and Brawl and Commander have so much potential as a refuge from the nightmarish speed and consistency issues of other formats, but even these sacred temples are being faithlessly looted for all they are worth, left sundered to the point of unrecognizability. Every format is becoming vintage, every format is becoming legacy, every format is looking more and more like Yu-Gi-Oh by the day, and it is actually really depressing.
    It has gotten to the point where the only real magic around anymore is kitchen table magic- so for those of you who can't afford a house with a dining room, sorry you're out of luck. I honestly would hope to see much more magic like that, unformatted, untarnished, unfiltered and non-net-decked kitchen table magic. Some of my favorite content on this channel have been the old 60 card budget deck tournaments and the robo-rosewater and chaos drafts that you never know what to expect from. Certainly those games were very rarely won on turn 3 or 4, and there was a lot less do-nothing while both players shuffle and search endlessly for perfect consistency just so they can play threats as fast as possible and hope their opponent is just a single turn behind.
    Anyway I'm ranting at this point, and I still enjoy these videos for the hilarious banter of some really funny nerds- but certainly the gameplay of formats like this can never match up to the standards of the past. Take that how you will.
