Twisted Will Well, you must be very new to Pokemon my friend. You see the Squirtle he was "perfect" with the best stats. Wasting time on a caterpie for one minute is like hell for Pokemon speedrunnera.
JacobYoGod GamingRocks no I've played a lot of pokemon( all of them gen 5 and below) I was just commenting on how the speed runners of pokemon, a game with a comparatively happy setting, has the more upset speed runners than gta. His rage is completely justified, and also hilarious.

Pokemon have IVs EVs and natures which determine their stats. Assuming every possible IV combination has a equal chance (1/31) that is a 1/186 of getting perfect ivs then the nature which is 1/26 / 1/13 (Mild or rash would work in this speed-run but speedrunners probably calced to best nature so we're going with 1/26)
I was taught that to multiply percentages you multiply both first numbers and both last number (So in this case 1X1 and 186/26) which would give us a 1/4836 chance of a perfect starter pokemon (This is of course with the assumption every IV and nature is as likely as all the others).
(Evs are drafted by the speedrunners and are usually not a problem)
(I have some other comments which are 1/152 instead of 186 my bad 31X 6 is 186 but those 152 calcs are still insane)
That's actually not how probabilities work.
6 Stats. Each has 31 possible Values.
You have a 1/31 of getting a single perfect IV assuming a uniform distribution.
The change of getting 2 IV's perfect, assuming they're independent, is 1/31 * 1/31 or, 1/961.
Thus, a perfect 6 IV's, not even accounting for a good nature, is (1/31)^6, insanely small. Furthermore, the perfect nature multiplied on top of this is getting you right up there with winning a small lottery. (add in shiny and it will get even more nuts)
I think your confusion came in that you took 1/31 * 1/6. That would be the change of a single 1/31 event, followed by a single 1/6 event. We want 6 unique, 1/31 events. And the 1/13 or 1/26 also on top of that.

I fucking lost it at the GTA plane crash part, just mindng his own business "duh-duh-da-da-tah *plane crashes and kills him* OH MY GOD that did not just happen."

natures didn't exist in gen 1. probably DVs (gen 1/2 IVs) or something.

Even the small 10-20 minutes runs you see, the people doing them have most likely been doing it over and over for multiple hours. So 10 minutes in is still soul-breaking when rng fucks you over yet again and your progress is thrown away again.

You see sometimes planes there not so common but not so rare and about 1 out of 50 of them will crash.. and even smaller change is that it hits you lol bad luck

still have a chance to encounter a level 7 kakuna or metapod, or a level 9 pidgeotto that can kill your run. lvl 9 pidgeotto = the worst possible RNG you can get as the speed stat for it out paces your pokemon, which results in a 10% chance escape rate if your starter is either squirtle or bulbasaur.

Honestly, as bad as swatting is, in the U.S., at least, swatting's days are numbered. Seriously, U.S. officials are now charging a man in the U.K. for a swatting attempt which resulted in the intended target being shot in the face and chest with rubber bullets, and it looks like he's about to be sentenced to 20 years in prison for the crime, possibly complete with extradition to the U.S.
I stand FULLY behind this. Only if people face a sentence equal to that of attempted murder -- which, let's face it, swatting IS an attempt at murder -- will the practice stop.

Austin Wilburn The thing with speedrunning games like pokemon is that even STARTING a speedrun can take hours of RNG, because what you dont see is that the speedrunners restart the game every time until they get a good starter with good stats (ev, special, base stats) and that something like this can be seriously frustrating

Also for other pokemon runs I've rarely seen people checking their starter pokemon stats as well. Gen 1 is always nidoran as I am aware.

You should probably explain that simply starting a Pokemon speed run can take hours because you have to keep resetting the game over and over until you get a Pokemon with good RNG stats.

the most unlucky moment i can remember is when bahroo in borderlands 2 farmed for somthing that would normaly take like 1 minute to farm but actualy took 1 hour to farm. that was realy hilarious

i just want to put the math out there because some of these comments are really absurd in regards to the caterpie clip
based on catch rate formula and the fact that caterpie's catch rate is 255, we get the following (this is based on approximations using the fact that a level 3 caterpie would have about 16 health and assuming that in the video is it at exactly 75%).
The catch rate formula (at least, the relevant variables in the situation) involves the following: ((3 * Max HP - 2 * Current HP) * Catch Rate)/ (3 * Max HP). So we get the following: ((48-24)* 255 * 1)/48, which gives us 127.5. Following that, the probability to capture a pokemon is calculated by the previous formula divided by 255, which results in the equation 127.5/255 = 0.5, or a 50% chance of capturing. Keep in mind this is me probably overestimating the HP% here; I'm pretty sure that caterpie is lower than 75% in the clip which raises that chance to about 57% if i'm even 1 HP off (also if I miscalculated the total HP count the % shouldn't be too off either because ((3 * Max HP - 2 * Current HP))/ (3 * Max HP) is a formula that will always be relative to the max HP of the pokemon)
In a speedrun, you do not want to waste more time than what is necessary, and a 50% chance isn't too large of a gamble to use even two pokeballs on, so using that extra turn to attack would have resulted in even more timeloss.
the chances of having all five pokeballs fail in a row is a 1/32 (or 3.1%) chance, which is very much attainable, but very frustrating to have to deal with.

In blue and green there's a way to tell what squares won't give encounters, that was taken out of FRLG.

@@Person.aMedia tbf for a speedrun it helps to save that bit of time, and as a casual, it is completely normal to be able to catch it without attacking it. I did it everytime I started a new file on my old pokemon games
Well, that's only 10 min into the game and at that point I think it is better to try to save the time spent on attacking and try to get it with the first ball.
The weird thing is that the runner gets so mad. He only lost the run at 10 minutes. Caterpie at that health has maybe a 1/2 chance to be caught, so chance of missing it 4 times is around 1/16.
So not terribly unlucky, I can't even see how it got to this video as the stakes were not that high and odds not that small.
@@wombat4191 in some pokemon games it is exceptionally difficult to get a run going. he often has to reset dozens of times to even get a suitable starter - so even being in a run is a bit of a challenge and then he lost it to something trivial

Lol Dear Jezus Christ. It actually is a kind of lag, it's called 'dropped frames' and is when the CPU of the streamers computer can't handle the amount of frames per second it needs to send out so the audio keeps playing while the video freezes up from time to time.
A bad internet conection can also be the cause of frames beeing dropped,
i think cheese had his quality balance to high because once the action started the quality just got fucking ugly while the CPU is still trying to keep the quality nice and smooth it freezes up.
(or the recorded video was just fucking recorded with a potato)

people will speed run any game. Even heavy rng dependent games like pokemon. If they can get good rng then they can good a good time or even a wr, but its also a matter of finding glitches, exploits and having the skill to get around rng.
Because sooner or later, luck will be in your favour, and it's hard to beat perfect luck
@Santiago Torres some Pokémon games are less luck based than others now that RNG manipulations were discovered. Several categories have little to no variance and RNg really only affects the World Record runners

I’m in the same boat lol. Never attempted a speed run and actually haven’t played a lot of these games but I’ve got a weird interest in many things I don’t actually partake in or actually know anything about.
Just in case some of you don't know, that werster clip should be impossible to lose. Caterpie has a 255 catch rate in generation 3. 255 is basically a guaranteed catch so that should never have happened.

Not everyone knows the catch rate of caterpie off the top of their head. I know so much stupid bullshit about pokemon but that I didn't. Some people who know a lot about pokemon may not find in necessary to know the catch rate of a shitty early game pokemon and would rather remember something more important like something not in a video game. But maybe that's a foreign concept to you.
I know nothing about Pokemon but I know how speedrunning works. No matter the catch rate unless the catch rate is EXTREMELY low in the early parts of a run you might as well go for luck for the sake of least time (Especially if resetting only costs like 5 minutes of your time)
I would say that even if you understand it has a high rate it helps to know that it's worth the risk that early in the run (even people who know it has a high catch rate seem to think it's still not worth the risk)

In fairness I'm not a speedrunner and a L3 caterpie with a bit of HP off should not be that hard to catch. He had some terrible RNG with how much the odds were in his favor.

I don't know the exact reasoning why you would throw the ball after just one tackle, but as a casual player I'm not going to assume I know better than someone who's done countless speedruns of Pokemon games and has a thorough understanding of the mechanics

A level 3 pokemon should be easy to catch with 5 poke balls. Plus, the person has done speedruns many times before.
According to that math Koma, you miss 4 in a row 2% of the time or 1/50. That isn't exactly unheard of.
It's a gamble, a gamble you can usually win on a level 3 caterpie. Can save you precious seconds as you approach the end of the game and the goal time

For the people that don't know pokemon have IVs EVs and natures. Assuming every possible IV combination has a equal chance (1/31) that is a 1/152 of getting perfect ivs then the nature which is 1/26 / 1/13 (Mild or rash would work in this speedrun but speedrunnners probably calced to best nature so we're going with 1/26)
I was taught that to multiply percentages you multiply both first numbers and both last number (So in this case 1X1 and 152/26) which would give us a 1/3926 chance of a perfect starter pokemon (This is of course with the assumption every IV and nature is as likely as all the others).
YOU THINK THAT 1/3926 CHANCE TAKES 10 MINUTES TO GET?
