competition is, even the way you plan out your speed run is, but the "battling" in a speed run is about time, so you have to minimize animation time and maximize efficiency

Hayabusa Oh for sure, having to force yourself to play a certain way, having to rely on luck, always being on the edge knowing one mistake could ruin the run, ect. No thank you.

It's worse with some games than others. I could never speedrun a long game like the Zelda games, but speedrunning Hangeki levels? Fun as hell.

Nah I wouldn't wanna officially speedrun anything. I did a Dark Souls 1 "speedrun", but it was without using any speedrun strats and I didn't restart when I died. I just knew the game in out so well that I went for it. Got a 1:41:39. I had fun, but it wasn't a real speedrun, so that's why lol. Same thing with Sexy Hiking,

And then you have all the people still saying Gen 1 was the best. Honestly, it has not aged well at all and while I can say I have been a big Pokemon fan since near the beginning and still am... Gen 1 is actually my least favorite one.
@@Lux_the_Lost Agreed, Gen 1 is not as great as people make it out to be, especially with some cheese tactics that you could use, which ruined the fun for me.
For example, beating Lance's Dragonite simply took using any poison type, as Dragonite would *only* use Agility, due to it being the only move it had that was of a type that was effective against poison, even though it did no damage, and since the enemy had infinite PP back then (unsure about recent versions), he was just a punching bag.

One of the most heartbreaking ones I've ever seen was a run of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation by ActionTurnip217. The game is notoriously long and difficult, and for this reason he had put off doing a run of it for a long while. He practiced for God knows how long, and finally did a live stream of the run, vowing that upon completion he would never attempt it again. He was making excellent time, and was near the end (I think the second to last level) when his emulator just went black.

When a run goes so badly and the runner loses so much time, that they're convinced they cannot possibly set a new PB. Yet they play on and miracles occur to allow them a great time at the end.

Apollo Legend I think the clip of goose is skill based isn't it? The "train shot" as it's known to the goldeneye elite? He shot that one bullet in that direction hoping to get that guards attention but if you dont fire it just right the door doesn't open. I wouldn't call that unlucky so much as just a flubbed run.

You know what would suck SO BAD? If you were doing a speed run, and you had the fastest time on the clock, and in the final boss battle (if the game you’re playing has one), you’re literally RIGHT about to make the final blow, and at the VERY LAST frame before hitting the boss... the game crashes

I'm new to speedrunning (not a speedrunner myself but I'm amazed by the dedication and skill of those folks) and I have to say that your channel is a god damn gold mine. To put that Gen 1 double miss + hurt by confusion loss into perspective, you have a better chance of running into 3 shiny pokemon in a row than having that happen.

There is one rule I have followed since i first started playing and that is "if a move is not 100 accuracy, it will fail when you need it the most." This is why I never use moves like Thunder and Hydro Pump unless I'm using the mechanics to guarantee a hit like with Thunder and Rain.

I remember ZFG's AGDQ OoT 100% speedrun in 2014 I think, where he had to get through the Deku Tree to defeat Ghoma twice because he messed up the Wrong Warp and didn't save. It wasn't too tragic but still funny.

don't n64 games auto-save? and he had 4:36 time save on his splits. though i know litteraly nothing of Majora's Mask though. never even finished the game to start with. let alone speedran it
kappa kappa n64 auto saving? Wow i thought I'd never hear that. Auto saving is still kind of a new commodity and wasn't even invented back then as far as i know. Wasn't even until the 360 era when it became commonplace. In any case Majora's Mask requires manual saving at statues so odds are the only save available is from making the save file itself so resetting the console sets you back with the same progress as starting over again. Hope this explains it.
Denis Lafrance no it's not against the rules but as stated previously it just takes so much time there's really no point in doing it. You're just better off starting over.

That pokemon miss one is all the pokemon games in a nutshell: rng.
Why do speedruners play the Japanese versions?
AlphaDemo_ I think it has to do with most text boxes being smaller but don't quote me on that
Because the Japanese text says the same amount of text in fewer dialogue boxes, you can get through the text faster, which means faster times overall. Since the game is exactly the same except for the text boxes, anything to save time and whatnot.

There's often localisation differences besides text too - I know in Goldeneye the Japanese version has more body armour than the US/PAL versions. There's also different timing between NTSC (US/JP) and PAL systems too, most notably being that NTSC runs at 50hz and PAL at 60hz. This can affect small things too, which might make either faster for different situations (e.g. again in Goldeneye, some stages are faster on NTSC, some of PAL).
PAL is 50Hz and NTSC is 60Hz! ;)
I like the explanations, but they take away the surprise factor when you do it before the clip. It would be better if you explain after it happens.
