I feel bad for Frank, he tried so hard to be a lantern then at the last second the ring flew away, that's literally one of the worst thing you could do to a person. the ring was his dream then it decides to give him one last "fuck you" before crushing his dream entirely
Funfact: Frank Laminski's first appearance is Showcase #22(1959), and then he reappeared in Geoff Johns' Green Lantern: Secret Origins. In both comics, he was saved by Hal just like in this video.
I think at that point, more orange emotion (neediness was it) started to show from frank so the ring was like, wait... nevermind, you're not the right person.
This was one of my favourite videos of Benny, thank you for everything you’ve done. You were a great narrator and I’m glad I was introduced to your channel.
Can everyone stop saiding Phantom ring is like the White Lantern ring. They are completely different. Phantom Lantern ring= you change based on your emotions White Lantern ring= you can control the other power rings and you can disable power rings at anytime and you can bring people back to life. Damn its not that hard to understand 😅
Well sorta. The phantom ring adjusts to fit it's user's emotion or to function properly, it switches emotions to function as properly as possible but it can't tackle every emotion at once. The white lantern basically controls every other lantern ring along with life and the universe therefore every other emotion, it's not just bound to 1 or interchanging it's everything in 1 big bag.
Nguyen Yen Yes, a lot worse. Three, at least there is two people ahead of you. #2 is so close to success that it feels that the loss wasn't deserved. #3 can at least point to #2 and say "well that person didn't make #1 either"
the dude was just over emotional, if someone mostly indifferent with good enough willpower to muffle their emotions that are unnecessary for the given task got the ring then this ring would be about as good as the white ring
That part where Jessica puts on the Phantom ring and it shows her that she's a Green Lantern then makes a construct to hold down Frank almost made me tear up lol I was so happy for her!
so the white ring allows you to use the entirety of the emotional spectrum(and probably more) but you have to be chosen. The phantom ring allows you to use any of the ring colours, and anyone can do so, but it is unstable. The indigo rings alows one to copy te abilities of another ring user? did I get this right?
As other people have pointed out, the Phantom Ring is really interesting given how it's a white ring that anyone can use. So it'll be interesting if they bring Kyle(?) in to fight against the next big phantom ring user. Though I do see a flaw with the Phantom Ring: It doesn't seem to give access to all the spectrum at once, but instead lets you swap between the different emotions. That'll be a crucial flaw/point to consider if the Phantom Ring goes up against a White Lantern.
Planet Kuruto but it literally can't, the Phantom ring only allows you to access one emotion at a time while being a white lantern takes you having all the emotions at once. Hence it's greatest weakness by not being able to achieve life or death
Brendan Gill well life IS an emotion it's not like they took all the emotions out them in water and mixed them if white was just the combination of all the lanterns then it shouldn't have the power to bring people back to life sure the white lantern uses ALL the emotional spectrum but that doesn't mean the white lantern IS all of the emotional spectrum basically imagine if Hal Jordan got access to the powers of all the other lanterns while still being a green lantern that's what the white lantern is it is it's own thing but it gives you the access to the other things
2:05 oops my bad! Wrong guy! ....well bye Can you imagine how furious anyone would be if they had a chance to be granted one of the universe's strongest weapon but you're denied it almost instantly?
Yoni Katz He stole the Phantom Ring. He has a weapon of tremendous power. I would attack first if I encounter the thief who stole my gun, would you? Simply because I know what his intention of and that the weapon is safer in my hands.
well this story was very good even so I feel bad for Franklin he just wanted to be a hero and do the right thing, ok yes he became obsessed and in his obsession he did bad things but even so it would not have bothered me if they had brought him back for a redemption story
Does anyone else here wants DC to bring back martian manhunter and static?isn't that what dc rebirth is?bringing back lovable characters?they already brung wall back
He didn’t even seam like a bad guy. Then he just suddenly starts burning down houses and shit. Idk if comicstorian skipped details but it felt like a 180.
brr.its.cold yeah having something you want and work so hard to achieve so close to you and have it just taken away troll style is pretty traumatizing.
Okay... If I had the phantom ring I would put a few safety precautions. 1. A phantom lantern is a phantom lantern. 2. You can use any portion of the emotional spectrum. 3. Each emotion can't consume you and take over you. 4. You may not be worthy but you have to uphold your responsibilities to the phantom ring. 5. If you can't uphold your responsibility as a phantom lantern the ring will deactivate till a user is found and accepts their power.
He might, but at the same time, he's mostly in it for the power and popularity. He has good intentions, but he's become obsessed with the power of a Green Lantern.
@@TF2Fan101 Doesn't mean he couldn't be a Green Lantern. His willpower was there, he longed for it, willing to do whatever was necessary. He'd have been fantastic as a Green Lantern.
So, when will GL HQ finally officially relocate to Earth and stop searching for recruits outside it? Will it happen when we'll get 7th Earth GL? 9th? 153th?
I really dig this! but the name, Phantom? why not something to play off the colours, like the Prismatic ring, The mirror ring? heck Rainbow ring, Phantom doesn't really fit, oh well xD
Let be logical. A phantom is a ghost and ghost are known to stay on earth because they can't pass on. This is probably why Frank was chosen. He had the most regret. This feeling (of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over something that has happened or been done) is what is being utilized and is constantly showcased.
I have a request. Can you do a story from Captain America called "Streets of Poison"? I really enjoyed your telling of the Phantom Ring saga. I think it re-captured the spirit of the War of Light story and put another stamp on what it means to be a Lantern of any color.
Why did the green lanterns immediately assume frank was gonna fuck up as the phantom lantern? if you don't give someone a chance to make a mistake, how are they gonna learn what is right and what is wrong lol
Because if he was worthy of a ring, he'd have one. He stole what was described to them as a dangerous and highly unstable/unpredictable weapon of mass destruction. It's like giving a child a gun that shoots flaming bears with chainsaws for legs, it's best for everyone if that gun doesn't exist.
It's just im the kind of guy who'd like to figure out why those in charge of distributing the rings deserve theirs in the first place. Or, since the phantom ring does exist, whom is worthy and why? Are adults more morally responsible of handling firearms or do they simply know/understand legal laws better than a child?
billy bob pretty sure it's the rings choice as they're described as a piece of an 'entity' and adults are most likely chosen because in most people's lives they experiences events that require an extreme amount of willpower such as heart break, death, betrayal, depression, etc. At least that's how I see it.
Team Button Yea but how about kids who lose their parents early in their life. The amount of willpower it requires to keep on going in the world alone should not be under-estimated.
I am really digging these two, cause sooner or later Simon is going to expand on his unique power that canceled out the red ring without killing the holder and most likely a few others, same with her.
Thank you for the green lantern video, binged watched all the lantern video's in your playlist last week and couldn't wait for the next !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cake# I'm pretty sure there is only one orange lantern who killed off the rest of his core and stuffed all the rings somewhere because he's a horder and won't let anyone take his stuff
Nope. There is a single orange ring. That's part of what makes it unique. It can Orange Lantern constructs. That's constructs that are Orange Lanterns, rather than Lantern constructs that are orange.
Wasn't Volthoom from Earth-3 and that evil green lantern called Power Ring had a ring called "the ring of Volthoom" which would slowly drain life off its user? They even showed a little easter egg when Volthoom said "don't be a cowardly green lantern" referring to the Green Lantern of Earth-3
I have to wonder; Would it be plausible for there to be a Perfect Host for the Phantom Ring? Someone who could control the shifts between the Emotional Spectrum? There are exceptions to every rule, variables to the equation of life. Moreover, we’ve seen that there are individuals within the Various Lantern Corps like Sinestro’s Corp who aren’t complete Monsters, so their minds aren’t completely warped by their own Power Rings. So I mean, would it be possible that the Phantom Ring could be stabilized??
This seems hard because the strongest emotion at each moment could change the spectrum and the personality of the user making him dangerous to everyone around them. Even the best well adjusted person cannot keep his emotions at check all the time and during battles or stressful situations. I think this was why it was considered so dangerous to be used by anyone. You could say someone who is cold and without many emotional ties to others could keep the color to green but that will make the ring meaningless since he might as well be given a green to begin with.
Seems like the Phantom Ring would be the prefect Ring for Batman to be able to use. Being able to change from any of the color rings it can't get confused like the Green and Yellow ones supposedly did.
ummm not really, the point of the phantom lantern was to underline just how volatile human emotions are, the ideea behind the white lantern is that you gain power from enjoying every asepct of life/the emotional spectrum.
Yes and no, from what I remember the White ring is someone who masters every spectrum but there's like only one because he's the chosen one or whatnot, while the phantom can take the shape of any, but the person wearing it doesn't master the whole thing.
The white lantern has safety precessions an is for lanterns that have mastered all the emotional spectrum, the phantom ring is for anyone to use without any training or discipline
In latest news, in GL/GLC Hank Henshaw (the Cyborg Superman) used a previous link to the Central Green Power Battery (see his arc with the Alpha Lanterns) to become the "AI voice" in all the GLC rings. He used Simon Baz to break out of his Superman Fortress of Solitude prison, while at the same time Hank Henshaw used another GL to steal the Phantom Ring from Oa, killing a Guardian in the process. Taking the Phantom Ring, Hank Henshaw was able to confuse the entire GLC into fighting each other, until the Guardians began "purifying" the rings' AI. Hank Hensaw fled with the Phantom Ring, and both have not been seen since "The" Green Lantern comic books (centered on Hal Jordan) started. This was in 2018.
No, the WL ring is all the emotions combined, the phantom rings just blucks you to the emotional spectrum and as a result you change based on your mood, normal rings regulate each colour even the red rings do up to a point, the PL ring doesn't have that.
hey, Comicstorian, I've always wondered about the "emotional spectrum" and wanted to know your opinion on perhaps seeing a ring from beyond our visible spectrum; like maybe an ultraviolet or infared lantern.
PugMeister that would actually be really cool. Like instead of the visual light (emotional) spectrum there should be an electromagnetic corps, X-ray, gamma, radio, micro, infared
There is actually an ultraviolet corps that is enslaved by it’s emotional entity this corps is powered by self resentment/internalised emotions lord knows what an infa-red corps would run off of
so from what i'm getting, the phantom ring is so dangerous because it causes extreme mood shifts at the slightest hint of emotion, then amplifies those emotions to their limits he feels mad: turns into a red lantern and goes into a rage he wants to keep his ring: turns into an orange lantern and immediately tries to take the other rings feels fear: turns into a yellow lantern and tries to scare the green lantern feels the slightest bit of compassion: immediately turns into a purple lantern and takes off his ring feels a little hope: turns into a blue lantern and feels nothing but hope. you can't control the phantom ring because it keeps changing and amplifying your emotional state.
Anyone ever noticed? Here is DC with their Rebirth bringing everything we loved about DC back into the main Universe. Meanwhile Marvel with ANAD taking everything we loved about Marvel making it dissapear.
At first I thought "so...doesn't this defeat the purpose of the White Corps?.." and after a little consideration, I decided no for a couple reasons (and yes, I'm well aware I'm probably going to have a lot of run on sentences). Firstly, the whole concept of the Phantom Ring is that it belongs to no Corps with no guidelines, restrictions, or safety nets, more so being that anyone can wield it with out the ring seeking a user as the user is the one who seeks the ring. Secondly, a White Corps Power Ring can give the user any Lantern Corps abilities EXCEPT the Black Corps, which I'm assuming the Phantom Ring DOES have access to, but I'm not going to brand it as fact so feel free to (constructively) dispute this claim anyway you like so long as it provides both fact and/or logical reasoning as I'm not completely sold on it's access to the Black Corps either since Death isn't an emotion. Finally, and importantly, the White Corps Power Ring has power over the emotional spectrum as a whole, freely able to use any and all Corps (discounting the Black Corps as stated Death is not an emotion) abilities simultaneously and in combination, while the Phantom Ring cannot, and is forced to use them individually, and it having an emotional impact on the user the weak minds have no control of. Hypothetically if someone who was emotionally stable and/or balanced could wield the Power Ring with no problems, most likely someone who would otherwise have been a candidate for the Green Lantern Corps
"poor guy all he wanted was to be a hero" and that's it, our desires are very important, that we wan't to be a hero, don't mean, that we are a hero. Same as Azrael, he wanted to be a Batman, but he was a bad man, so Batman refuse, and Azrael was angry, and here, this guy was insane because no ring wanted him.
I feel bad for Frank, he tried so hard to be a lantern then at the last second the ring flew away, that's literally one of the worst thing you could do to a person. the ring was his dream then it decides to give him one last "fuck you" before crushing his dream entirely

There is actually an ultraviolet corps that is enslaved by it’s emotional entity this corps is powered by self resentment/internalised emotions lord knows what an infa-red corps would run off of
I was waiting for this
big money me tok
That phantom ring reminds me of the character chameleon in mortal combat. Imagine all the lanterns powers on one ring. Sounds good to me.
i thought this story was going to be useless, it caught my attention! I cant wait to see what happens next!
Finally a green lantern story
That’s F***** the ring made a mistake and came to the one person that wanted it the most
And also he had so much Will, so why didn’t it choose him
Is it just me or would it be awesome if the White Lantern fought the Phantom Lantern
This is my new favorite Lantern story.
FINALLY THANK YOU COMICSTORIAN
The Phantom Ring is a really cool power ring you can be willpower, fear, rage, hope, greed, love, and compassion. That is awesome.
Ahh yes I was waiting for you to do this one I really enjoyed reading it!
I've always wanted to see an standalone story arch of what would happen if brainiac assimilated the green lantern power battery
THE ULTIMATE MOOD RING
Thank you for answering my request
This was a brilliant story!
so from what i'm getting, the phantom ring is so dangerous because it causes extreme mood shifts at the slightest hint of emotion, then amplifies those emotions to their limits
he feels mad: turns into a red lantern and goes into a rage
he wants to keep his ring: turns into an orange lantern and immediately tries to take the other rings
feels fear: turns into a yellow lantern and tries to scare the green lantern
feels the slightest bit of compassion: immediately turns into a purple lantern and takes off his ring
feels a little hope: turns into a blue lantern and feels nothing but hope.
you can't control the phantom ring because it keeps changing and amplifying your emotional state.
Too bad he can’t get an orange ring. He’d be perfect
Someone who isn’t anyone special doesn’t become a pilot
Finally another GL story 😍

Frank is seriously jacked i mean one armed pull ups with a cinderblock that guys crazy
Amazing video thanks Benny
Anyone ever noticed?
Here is DC with their Rebirth bringing everything we loved about DC back into the main Universe.
Meanwhile Marvel with ANAD taking everything we loved about Marvel making it dissapear.
I liked as soon as I started the video because I love the Lantern Mythos and still havent seen a new story since New 52 that dissapoints me
yes! I've been waiting on A Green Lantern video
This ring would be dangerous in the hands of a person with severe mood swings.

DC Rebirth is the best thing coming out of DC Rebirth.
Yo that ending is dope!
This gives me the idea of people using different rings. Like maybe just two?
"Is it because the flash is here?" Simon, you don't know what Jessica and Barry do in the future
