Been modding cars for years (mainly 4 cylinder turbos) and like others have already said in this thread the difference between a catted APR (for example sake) down pipe and a catless APR down pipe when it comes to horsepower is literally 2 or if your lucky 3 HP gain, it’s not noticeable. So in summary it’s not worth the toxic fumes and plus I personally like the exhaust tone better as well...oh and I like passing inspection every year with no issues too.
I always thought if you go catless with full bolts on it would make significant more hp, however if u have minimal bolts on then the difference is barely a 3 4 hp, that's what my tuner told me
@@the_batmobile0.4 it does make significantly more… and the fumes ain’t bad… ya ever smell old converter when someone walks on it? That’s way more nasty that no cat..
My hi-flow catted cts-turbo downipe make about the same hp as a friend catless downpipe. Both mk7 gti, same tune, same condition, same dyno, both stage 2. So unless you're really big turbo pushing 500whp+, the catless hp gain over catted is almost non existent. For anyone that only has a stage 2 or is38, you're good with catted, will save your health and the environment so much more.
@@chriswaseman2562 late but no, High flow will hold up to the pops and bangs tune, as it is less restrictive than factory cat and has bigger cells within the cat which makes it much much much harder to clog the cells.
I got a catted for my camaro. The catted is a little quieter which for me isn’t bad cause I already have a muffler delete and a careless downpipe for le would be a bit obnoxiously loud. With the catted downpipe I won’t get in cabin fuel smell and pass emissions. All of these factors made me go with catted there was no point in going Catless for me as you would only gain an extra 2 hp at most with a catless and those extra 2 hp aren’t worth considering you’ll smell like gasoline every time you drive your car and having emission inspection problems
Just go stage 2, it’ll turn off the CEL. And another difference between catted and catless is the tone. Not everyone wants the rasp sound whereas the catted downpipe keeps a deeper tone in which case having one or the other affects your overall sound from your catback
To whom it may concern; 1. If you remove your cats, you have a good chance of giving yourself cancer. Get a high flow cat. Something to think about if you plan on having kids. How would you feel if you lost a parent? Those that have need not reply, you get it. 2. or B. depending on whether you are numerical or alphabetical, loud four cylinders don't sound all that good. If you need to make noise to be noticed for some reason, get a V8 or above. Also, if you Know your car smells like shit, that means you don't give a shit about other people which makes you an ass hole. Haters... Begin now.
I've got a Mk6 GTI. It came with a hi flow cat and it sounded great but I couldn't pass emissions for some reason so I went stock and I felt the difference immediately. It's been a year! But today I'm going to have my High flow cat reinstalled
Depending on your modifications I wouldn’t throw the parts on and run them without a tune, and if you’re running a catted downpipe you shouldn’t get a CEL because you didn’t delete the cat, but you should definitely tune the car with the downpipe being installed
Mine did this until I replaced the turbo to downpipe gasket. No more leaks and fumes coming through the vents and best of all, no more rasp due to leaks

Looking to get some nicer sound coming out the back end of my mk7.5 GTI. I don't plan on getting a tune until the warranty is done, and the car is at 10,000KM. Would you suggest just getting a CBE or just a downpipe to start? just specifically for sound. Also, would a DP increase the chance of an engine / turbo problem arising? Don't wanna blow my turbo and then get f*cked on warranty cause of a DP.
My experience from my mk7 is that a CBE is basically a muffler delete or a resonator delete which you can probably do at a shop for way cheaper than buying a whole CBE. Doing one or other alone won’t improve sound much unless 3k RPM. You’d have to do both for a bigger improvement.
Do i need to stage 2 or tune if im going catless downpipe? Atm i have oem dp with awe track edition. Idk if i should go catted or catless? And what kinds of downpipe should match my awe track edition exhaust.
