      Your hockey stop engrams (your brain’s movement programs) were developed in a different body than you have today. It’s comparable to putting the brakes from a Toyota Prius on a Chevy Silverado and wondering why it doesn’t seem to stop right.

      It is a motor skill that you should not forget. It is like riding a bike, once you learn how to do it you will never forget it. I started ice skating every since I was 14 and I have been doing it for several decades now. Though I have slowed down a little, by not skating as much, it is something that comes naturally to me when I get out there on the ice.

    One of the best tips I received when I was beginning to learn a 2 foot hockey stop is to use only a 5/8" radius sharpening instead of a typical 1/2" radius. The duller edges allow you to slide easier instead of having sharper edges that bite harder into the ice. It's the biting effect that gives you the feeling of losing control and stumbling so beginners end up fight the stop and thus never getting comfortable.

    I learned the hockey stop within a day of training. Then i decided to sharpen my skates. Now its impossible to even turn my skate into a slide without falling. Hockey stops with sharp skates are crazy hard.

    • @AlpineIceFreestyle
      @AlpineIceFreestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always use crazy sharp blades and do all my Tricks with them. Its just about getting used to it😉

    • @ukjim_sim
      @ukjim_sim ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlpineIceFreestyle Hi, I recently had my blades sharpened and I can't seem to be able to snow plow with my right foot now, left is ok though. What most videos don't explain is where is your weight when stopping? Also what angle should be used if any? The reason I ask is I hear 'don't put as much weight on the skate' but if I turn with both feet, my weight has to go somewhere lol. Your help would be greatly appreciated 👍 Thanks for the video

    • @AlpineIceFreestyle
      @AlpineIceFreestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ukjim_sim Its pretty normal that sharp blades get stuck in the ice easier. you have to get used to this feeling and put some force into your foot. Btw: the weight should be around 70/30 on the outside foot you do the stop with. But thats not a fixed formula, its all about developing a feeling.
      This Tutorial is definitely not my best work, so i made a new one that will be online on oct 18. This should answer your questions better. If not feel free to contact me again ;-)

    0:35 This is not correct. The unit of impact force is Newton and not kilogram.
    Also, impact force depends on the duration of the impact.
    Regardless of this: Being able to brake is important.

    • @AlpineIceFreestyle
      @AlpineIceFreestyle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      And how many people know what 1 newton is? Nearly nobody. If i would do it in newton i could skip the whole chapter so i asked a engineer how to convert that to numbers everybody understands. He said you can compare it to those amounts of kilos if you take a average body impact at ice skating - just to make it easy for everybody to understand. Even if not everybody understands that...

    • @deichgrav7406
      @deichgrav7406 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlpineIceFreestyle the problem is, 1 kilo equals 9.81 Newton so your off by a factor of 10. The right awnser would be 700 Kilos and thats still quite a lot.
