  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories is Weird and Terrible. This game was released on the Game Boy Color in North America in 2002, and was succeeded by two other Yu-Gi-Oh! games that same year! Thus, today we're doing a Yu-Gi-Oh! retrospective, going over series memories (mainly, from the beginning of Duel Monsters through GX), and most importantly, explaining why Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories is so odd and horrible!

He first appeared in this game. Rumor has it that he's from an early draft of the King's Memories arc (this game came out before the Battle City arc and it already has the Ancient Egyptian version of Yugi's grandpa) that was later replaced by Zorc Necrophades.
The Forbidden Memories game seems to support this rumor because it featured the plot of what is basically the King's Memories arc years before it happened in the manga, but with some major differences and he's the final boss.

The original "Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters" video game came out before the real-life card game existed, so it invented its own rules based on what it had to go off of from the manga and Toei anime. As such most of the games in the "Duel Monster" series stuck to following similar rules that the first video game established. The first video game that followed the real card game's rules was "Duel Monsters 5: Expert 1", which is what became "The Eternal Duelist Soul" in the U.S.

Damn my guy.... the game was bad but dark nite wasn’t that hard to beat lol. Card types had weakness so you could destroy a 3000atk monster with something much weaker. Also... you could build your own cards which could be extremely powerful and require no tributes. Again, everyone is different but my 10 year old self figured this out after a few gos at the game. Definitely up there as one of the worst yugioh games BUT, I loved it as a kid especially once you understand the mechanics.
    SIDE NOTE:
Marik, Yami and Bakura are much harder opponents. Also, most of the others after beating them 5 times up their difficulty!

  • @TheNorilla
    @TheNorilla 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

The passwords were the serial numbers at the bottom of the cards IRL, so if you had the actual card you could get it in the game by putting in the serial number.
Also surprised you had trouble with this game since there's elemental weakness in this game that can allow monsters to defeat monsters with an element they're strong against even with a lower attack value... and also the fact that the AI is very easy to bait. They'll attack anything you set into defense mode; even remember fighting everyone by only putting monsters into defense mode as a kid.

You can actually sort the cards by name, attack, defense, etc by pressing I think select. Also dark nite is easy to beat, you gonna use the types to your advantage. Something with 300 attack can defeat something with 3000 attack. A deck made up with card part monsters of different types is the most overpowered deck in the game. You will have monsters to defeat anything and can have 1800-2000 attack/defense monsters monsters that requiring no offerings. Also you can use the predictable AI to your advantage, they will attack the a face down card with their strongest monster first.

Bait out his changes with something you can beat over and put cards of types that will kill his monsters in defense mode when he has swords active, I almost never lose to him. The limited list is what stops you from putting multiple of the powerful spells in your deck not cost & 3 is the max you can play of any card, not 4. trash vid

There are a few things about this review I want to address:
-you could sort the cards by alphabetical order, attack points, etc.
-the password option is the serial number on the bottom right of most cards in Legend of Blue Eyes, Metal Raiders, or Magic/Spell Ruler
-DarkNite isn't too bad if you don't allow him to summon Sanga, Kazejin or Suijin, but sometimes yes you do auto lose if he has 2-3 Change of Hearts. He plays like the postgame bosses but I found him harder than Yami Yugi and Shadi
-it doesn't teach you how to truly play Yugioh properly but it does have an interesting Fusion mechanic (that acts like Xyz summoning) where you can turn Magician of Faith and Morphing Jar into Mystical Sand, and I built my entire deck around Mystical Sand lol

  • @ChieftainHawke

this game is actually great, same mechanics as forbidden memories which had the advantage of better hardware. It came out when there wasnt a market for yugioh. and in all fairness, this game is a translation of the game that came out in 2000 which was basically a color version of a game made in 1998 because there was a yugioh card game. they based the mechanics on the yugioh duel monsters manga, and there wasn't much context to how the game worked. The "duel monsters" anime hadn't even been animated yet. This and FM were the first games the US got, but the next game, eternal duelist soul was a drastic improvement and world wide edition which came a year later is often considered the greatest yugioh game of all time. I do think Konami shouldn't have bothered to release this game and release EDS a year earlier since the japanese version came out in 2001. but i think its because the game spoiled too much of the battle city plot which they wanted to wait til the english dub got farther

Wait until you get to The Sacred Cards and Reshef of Destruction. You thought the rules were altered in Dark Duel Stories you ain't seen nothin' yet! It became a RPG with monster strengths and weaknesses. You might think that is easy RPG elemental strengths and weaknesses are pretty simple but the Yu-Gi-Oh GBA RPGs along the basic 8 elemental strengths and weaknesses combined it with the 20+ monster types. You will command your monster with 3500 Attack points to destroy a money with 300 Attack points only to see your monster in the Graveyard (GY ain't gonna happen) and your Life points decreasing.

Already knowing how to play the game and having a basic grasp of the meta back then, this game was a weird deconstruction of the game. Improper fusion mechanic (Though it did come true many years later), Elemental advantage ala pokemon, Knowing correct fusion material didn't matter sometimes, Some cards missing their effects...This game was basically gen one pokemon in terms of weirdness. Eternal Duelist Soul was such an upgrade it wasn't funny.

Recently dug my old GBC out of storage and have been playing this game some. This game can be kind of a mess I terms of the gameplay, Eternal Duelist Soul is actually faithful to the real card game's rules.
    Some things not mentioned here:
    - Card game rules seem to follow the anime's Duelist Kingdom rules, despite having characters from the Battle City and ancient Egypt story arcs
    - types matter (like fire automatically win against forest type, forest against wind I think, etc) and if you have type advantage but not lower attack points, you don't even lose any life points
    - traps basically suck. They're only usable for one turn, after which they're just discarded
    - lots of card effects work nothing like they're supposed to, but follow the anime more (the real Change of Heart only applies for one turn, DDS Change of Heart is permanent and there's a new card added called Brain Control that has the one turn effect)
    - Fusion and Ritual monsters can be added to your deck and summoned like normal monsters without the two base fusion cards or the ritual card, instead with the right amount of tributes
    - ritual cards follow the anime rules where you need a specific base monster (like Dark Magician) along with extra tributes to activate the ritual (dark magic ritual) to summon the ritual monster (Magician of Black Chaos) but you don't need that monster in your deck at all. (Real card game just requires tributes totaling the number of stars, so like Magician of Black Chaos is 8 stars, you just need two four star monsters to sacrifice, and you don't even need them to be summoned to the field, they can be sacrificed from the hand or the field)

I don't remember when but I was either very late into the game or had beaten it already when I discovered creating monsters. It's ridiculous. I think I created a monster called Gatling Rabbit that was only 3 stars but had 2,000 ATK. It has been over a decade and a half so my memory might be off, but some of those combined parts created insane monsters. I'm still salty about it.

Loved playing Sacred Cards ,never got far in Forbidden memories.Best method is to have a GBC emulator and this game downloaded .The final bosses you may as well have the 2000 att construction cards 1 copy of the op magic cards dark hole change of heart etc.The first 2 tiers/duelists having most of the cards unlocked its more fun experimenting with fusions with weaker monsters ,rituals .You only need to the most powerful cards for final bosses before that just have fun grinding beating the game isnt subjectively the goal for me.

Because of this, and with the manga's version of Yami Yugi and Yami Bakura's first shadow game being a tabletop RPG with a villain named Zorc, the manga's version of the final story arc feels like a much better payoff to everything the series had been building up previously.

This game reminds me of an early non 3d built of Sealed Memories. They both have prototype rules making little sense because their jp versions came out before the physical card game, enemies that can stomp you mercilessly from the beginning of the game, and Darknite as the final boss.
Except in sealed memories, we get some of his generic supervillain backstory lol.
