The Batura Expedition Disaster

Batura Sar is a towering peak located in the northwestern Karakoram Range in Pakistan. Despite its great height, difficulty and dangers of ascending Batura have relegated it to relative obscurity within the mountaineering community, as there have been only 3 recorded successful summit bids in the peak's history, with the latest of these taking place all the way back in 1988.

Which is exactly what the producers want. If it weren't ridden with potential disasters waiting to happen, then it's just another climbing documentary following multiple mountaineers ... nobody with a brain will invest in that, they want money made for every dollar put into tge production. They have plenty of lawyers on retainer to write up the disclaimers in the final document that each participant has to sign, and you better believe that there's a death clause in the fine print of said document, my friend.

7 mile ridge walk to the summit? Jesus Christ that sounds absolutely insane. I can see why people don’t attempt Bathura. Shifting Ice fall, ridge walking and crevasses in every corner. It’s pretty much walking blind into a minefield.

I have lots of avalanche training from Alaska including several rescues and digging out several who died. That mountain is a avalanche trap. It's easy to see that that party was buried in avalanche during the storm. They are forever in the glacier.

Unfortunately the attitude of the porters is common for that part of the world. Agreements and contracts frequently mean nothing, especially when dealing with someone from a different tribal or ethnic group and especially with a foreigner. Expect to build in a little extra expense to satisfy their ego that they got something over on you, but once you give in to any significant change all you’ve done is appear gullible and weak and they will keep pushing.

Consider how often native guides get slandered in these older mountaineering stories, I am highly suspicious of the story with the guides. This group really gave of the vibe of them not know what they were doing, what with them inviting random people along without any plan of how to feed them. Seems like “demanded supplies for further payment” might actually be “never got paid and left” or “realized their employers didn’t have proper equipment/experience and left before they got them killed.” I do think it’s important with these older stores were we know this takes place to be critical of details like this.
