    But that glitcihiness of the 4 is "a sound"- as Daniel might say. It really adds something that can be quite musical in the right context. Radiohead's "My Iron Lung" is a great example of this.

    So glad you like video guys. I've been waiting for a true bypass DC powered Whammy for years. The fact is, they delivered AND improved the quality of the audio at the same time. It's a vast improvement IMHO.

    I like the Whammy V better, not only does it sound better but it also looks a lot nicer especially with the big WHAMMY text on the pedal

    I saw one of these pedals on a board of a player I admire so I of course checked TH-cam for what it is. About four seconds into watching this I recognized the voice from TPS, see, I know it so well I use the short name! Sure enough it’s “Daniel here.”

    I would love to get a True Bypass mod on my IV rather than a V. I almost got a V a couple of weeks ago, but that's when I realized I love the glitchiness on the IV.

    One thing not mentioned was that the W5 can't drop tune. But the W4 can. That's what I use to drop down my guitar a half step or a whole step. Other than that, it sounds like the W5 is better with keeping the tones clean and better overall sound. But if you want the best of both worlds, The Whammy DT is probably the best they have to offer.

    • @mweint
      @mweint 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The W5 has a drop down 2nd though. I don't have a W4 but would that achieve the same effect as the droptune?

    • @Zooropa_Station

      Yes, but still no semitone drop. Very finicky with getting the pedal halfway under the 2 semitone setting.

      If you want Tom's tone you can use either but I prefer the IV because it sustains the notes better and longer IMO more like the 1st version that he uses.

  • @TheGigRigDaniel

    There is a switch on the 5 that brings the 4's glitching back. Also the way you power the 5 is extremely important. I have 5 clients who have upgraded from the 4 to the 5 who all use TheGigRig power and they LOVE the 5.

    • @Boogieplex
      @Boogieplex 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure I understand “gigrig” power. I just ordered a whammy 5 to replace my “ricochet”, wich i have powered up on a special port(18v?) on my voodoo labs power block. Can i just use the same power that i use with my ricochet? Thanks

  • @TheGigRigDaniel
    @TheGigRigDaniel  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Charlie. You can power the Whammy5 straight from the Distributor, the only issue is that because it uses a lot of digital processing, that in can in certain situations create some noise. The TimeLord isolates the supply so it keeps it silent ;)

  • @zombiemosher1139

    I currently own the Whammy 2 & 4 as well as the XP100 & rack DHP33. Out of those I actually prefer the 4, its deeper in tone I find. While you say the 5 catches more of note this may be closer to the Whammy 1 cause I feel that's what they were going for with the 5 but does it have the depth of the 4, I'll find out in the future. 😊

  • @devinsinderwitcz9134
    @devinsinderwitcz9134 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'll stick with the IV. It still gives better tone depth closer to the WH-1. The V is overwhelmingly better for chords but in now way competes with the IV in singular notes or sustain.

  • @JoelGilardini
    @JoelGilardini 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    so far I still like the glitchy-ness of the whammy 4 better, since if I need the polyphonic harmony thing, I leave these tasks to the EH Micro-POG and/or the RingThing.
    Plus the whammy4 has also a direct out, which is no more there on the 5!

    As 5 doctors/plumbers/guitarrists..and get 5 different answers...after just seeing a vid where the IV came out tops, this one here says the opposite. I can understand the chords switch (because the V still gives a choice between IV style and improved V ), and I can definitly understand the true by-pass. Now how about character ? Does the IV have a more characteristic sound ? And how about cut-outs ? In the other review the V seems ti have suffered from cut-outs...

  • @station2station544

    Being 1994, "My iron lung" must have been an early Whammy. What year did the 4 come out? I know Ed has a 5 on his board. They must have a couple because Johnny plays the Whammy -octave riff while Ed plays the eBow drone in the song.

    it still digitizes the signal, it noticeable, but thats what the true bypass is for

  • @TheGigRigDaniel
    @TheGigRigDaniel  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like the Morpheus, but as I wrote in the review i did for Guitar Buyer magazine, it seems to me they missed a trick with it but not having an ability to mix your original signal. But , it does what it says on the tin very well. Not a big fan of the glitch personally, but it is there on the 5, perhaps not as glitchy as the 4, which is not a bad thing IMO, but as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;)

    HI Brian, wont work well with a Preamp signal but i MUCH prefer the tone of the OD going into the Whammy as opposed to the Whammy going into the OD. It the same with all harmonising pedals, you either distort the harmony, or harmonise the distortion. Tracking is no problem ;)

  • @V6guyane973
    @V6guyane973 12 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have both now, whammy 4 and whammy 5, plus the MORPHEUS BOMBER.
    I have been disapointed by the whammy 5: the glitch-ness of the whammy 4 is better and more agressive for those who like the glitch, as I do.
    In terms of polyphony, the "chords" option of the whammy 5 is different from the morpheus bomber. But the morpheus bomber is much more realistic and has not delay.

  • @realtruenorth

      If you wanna go for droptuning, there actually is a Digitech Whammy model, called DT. Short for DropTuning. It has the same specs of the Whammy V but with another section on the side for changing the key of your instrument while still getting a good sound. However, it is 100 US$ more than the Whammy V. But it is worth it.

      Not so sure about bass. That would probably be best for a trip to the music store to try it out and judge for yourself. Though plenty of bass Octaver/Octave-down effects can differ, many of them do have a nice sound to it.

      Yes the 4 drop tunes one whole step down very well. Just grab a bass and tune it to Eb. Then engage the drop tune. It works very well. And the DT is even better. Now why would this question matter? Why would you want to downgrade?

      luis antonio castillo alfaro IV uses AC, V uses DC

      +Dustin Balog Actually they both run on DC. Pretty much all small home appliances, including effects do nowadays. The IV has an AC to DC convertor in it, which, tbh seems kinda counter-intuitive.

    Digitech has forgotten the balance mix pot on the harmony mode, does anyone know if it is easy and modify so as to have an effect blend pot on the wet signal in the harmony mode?

    so the whammy 5 runs on 9v ???

    • @Studio603OnTheAir
      @Studio603OnTheAir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The old 4 ran on 9v (AC) which meant you couldn't run everything off a 1 power brick that was dc only, the 5 runs on 9v (dc) like every other pedal you probably have, it says 1300ma (milli amps) or 1.3amps on the side, this would be a lot for a pedal, but in the brochure it's something like 267ma dc ,I've read that the 1300 is inrush current when it starts up, I haven't had an issue yet, this was one of the reasons I sold my 4 and went with the 5 , I didn't want a separate 9v ac wall wort to deal with, now I run everything off of a single Strymon Zuma quiet power supply that has plenty of power (9 each outputs @ 500ma each) this covers everything and keeps it simple, the 5 is a touch smaller too and has true bypass, it doesn't have the additional dry out, but I never really used it anyways.

    Shame you didn't show the bypass difference with the Whammy 4.
