    I initially thought it was a mistake to go to Alfa instead of Williams, since Williams showed more potential in the last season. But clearly Bottas and Alfa knew more about the potential of the new Ferrari engine :) and here we are. Great decision.

      Its not just the Ferrari engine. Alfa and Haas both put together quality midfield cars. Each team's success is the product of their own development moreso than their engine package.

    • @Jwm367t
      @Jwm367t 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That is disingenuous to say the success is down to the Ferrari enginge. The primary factor Alfa are performing well is that they've had a better handle of the regulations, in particular they are the current leaders for having the lowest running weight for a car.

    Valtteri had huge pressure coming to the Mercedes, going to a team that is the top team and next to Champion, it is huge pressure to perform and perform consistently. We have seen many drivers struggle, great drivers struggle and even struggle mentally. But getting back to Valtteri, he gained massive experience being at Mercedes on all levels, he is definitely a better driver now and specially with pressure of the shoulders he can push at Alfa. Not underrated. He was in the best team for several years. Underrated drivers don't get such a chance. He was just not able to be as cold as Rosberg to win a title. And he was the only one to be able to win a title against Hamilton till 2021.
      And I don't think the 1 year contract was a problem. He gets the driver title and gives Mercedes what they desperately wanted the Nr1 on their car. He would have been set. Even able to negotiate a bigger better longer deal. Like Mercedes tried with Rosberg.

      He was rarely on team orders at Mercedes and there is no doubt he blossomed as a driver. He was criticised initially as being a makeweight , then he won a few races on merit and things started to change for him. Was he ever WDC material: no, he didn't have that killer instinct of full commitment shown as evidenced by his lack of aggression in 2018 Bahrain GP when he just could not get past Vettel. That said he is an above average drive who spent 5 years in Lewis's shadow but by and large got the job done when it mattered. What he lacked was consistency, something that LH (usually) & MV deliver in spadefuls.

I always thought he was inconsistent at Merc, which was frustrating to watch, because he has the talent, he got that Mercedes drive on merit, cause his Williams stint was so good. The problem at Mercedes was that he was driving alongside and being compared to Hamilton and let’s face it most drivers get made to look average when they have to go up against guys like Hamilton.

    I think Mercedes treated Bottas better than a lot of people think. In 2019 they even sent Hamilton’s performance engineer to Bottas’s side of the garage to be Bottas’s race engineer in an attempt to help him improve his results after his winless 2018 season. And contrary to popular belief he really wasn’t hit with team orders that often (although his strategies were often kinda sh*t tbf). He wasn’t treated any worse by Mercedes than Perez is at Red Bull and was certainly treated better than Barrichello and Irvine were at Ferrari. The only thing Bottas really deserved at Mercedes that he didn’t get imo was a multi-year contract at some point, maybe sign him on a 1 year deal in 2017, then two 2 year deals after that (18-19, and 20-21).
    People are saying that Bottas is a ‘new driver’ now at Alfa, but he’s always been quick. He was impressive at Williams all those years ago, it’s just that in a front-running team alongside a top tier driver, someone who impressed in a midfield team could end up looking worse than he actually is.

      Paul Ricard and Zandvoort last year were two clear examples of how they fucked his race just to hold up RB or Verstappen, because what Merc want is a 1-2 every race, and if they can't get that, then a win for Hamilton - which means Bottas strategy is primarily not about his quickest race distance, but preventing Hamilton from losing.
      Perez was only in his first season at RB last year. He often qualified far lower than the car was capable of. That's not true of Bottas. He had years in the same team, knew the car well, and knew the engineers. The way the hybrid cars were designed, qualifying was really important, and often easy to build a lead in clear air because of aero - so emphasis was in qualifying and controlling the race.
      You also make the point that they swapped an engineer for him in his *3rd* season at the team. Remember how Hamilton moaned in 2016 about changing engineers? I think engineers are more important than people realise. All this talk of 'equal equipment' is all very well, but if you don't have the right people helping you optimise the car in every session, it's easy to fall behind in the points, and then become the de facto wingman.

      @@wonderfulhumanbeingwithagr6381 Because Merc were uncertain that he could've performed as they wanted him to. Think about it as a team director : if you'd have, let's say Mazepin, as your new second driver. ou'd first sign him for a year. But if he doesn't perform that much but nobody else is available, you'll sign him again for another year, but you'll not trust him straight away for 5 years and engage the team to potentially face 5 difficult years if he doesn't performs. For Bottas, it's the same. He performed, but not as much as Merc expected him to and that's why he was never signed for 5 years straight away. You always have to look to the future in F1 and be absolutely certain of your choices. Here, Merc were prudent with him and never engaged themselves with him for 5 years and risking potentially to waste those years if he would've been underperforming a lot
