Hi Guys! Sorry if the cuts seem choppy. YT blocked the video several times and required additional time stamps to be cut before it would allow the video go to the live. 🤦‍♀️

It's not that it's choppy, it's that the best parts always seem to be chopped out =/

We bet! YT just gives us the time stamps and we have to remove them in order to get it to post live :) This video was blocked 5 different times before it was able to go live :(

You both missed one of the best lines in the episode when Roy says, "Jen, who is this Joker?" and then he turns to his make-up smeared girlfriend and says, "Oh, no offence."

Having a transphobic character (especially when it's the established jerk character) does not a transphobic episode make.

I do think it is a totally legitimate way to read that episode, and of course if it makes you enjoy the show more overall more power to you, but for me at least it definitely feels like a lot of the comedy in that episode is based in the idea that because she is trans leads to her being "manly", off the top of my head stuff like drinking beer, watching football and being strong are all things that are only present in the episode to make fun off.
I do believe that there shouldn't be limits on comedy, I would like to make it clear that I think this episode should be allowed to exist and I don't believe in censorship in cases where giving people the option to avoid something that makes them uncomfortable is present. People can skip this episode, or skip the parts of it they don't like. But there is a concept in comedy where you are making jokes at the expense of a specific demographic, which is the idea of punching up and punching down. Making jokes at the expense of people that are more or equally priveliged to you, be that in money, power, prominence, whatever, then that is generally seen as more socially acceptable and more people are happy to laugh along. A simple example would be an office, if a low level employee made a joke at the expense of the CEO, that would be punching up. The CEO has more money power and privelidge than the employee, so that joke would be better received than a joke a boss would make at the expense of their low level employees, because that would be punching down on the people you have more power and privelidge than, this joke would probably not be well received at an open mic night.
So, the show making jokes at the expense of trans people in general, and specifically trans women, would be seen as punching down and not really worsening in any major way, but at least adding onto the negative representation of trans people in media (especially at the time), and specifically to me it does very much seem that a lot of the opinions mirrored in the episode reflect the writers own to some extent, though your mileage may differ on that
Though, like I said, comedy is entirely subjective and not everyone is going to have the same views (and nor should they, different opinions are what makes life interesting) and dark comedy that roots itself in punching down does absaloutly exist and has a lot of people who love it.
I love the IT crowd, and a lot of this episode, hell it's got some of my favourite bits of the whole show in it, I just skip the bits I don't like if I feel the need to. I'd also love to hear where we disagree!

@@Addy_The_Baddy So why can't trans like football and drink beer, are they beerphobic or something?

    • @Kaylakaze
      @Kaylakaze 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It had nothing to do with him. What made the episode transphobic was it's portrayal of Amber (or whatever her name was) and the violence against her.

@Pheeb Hello Too fucking bad, snowflake. The suffix "phobic" doesn't only mean "fear of." Is oil afraid of water because it's hydrophobic, smoothbrain?

I think some people think Katherine Parkinson (as Jen) over does it a little with her acting in this show. It doesn't bother me bc I think that is sort of the point, and a part of her character.
I recommend the show "Humans" where she plays a bit more of a serious role that shows her talent as an actor pretty well. It is a Sci-Fi Drama available on Prime Video for anyone interested. Originally BBC, I think.
If anyone else has seen "Humans," i would be interested on your opinion of the show as a whole. Idk how well known or popular it is.

You gotta consider this was back in 2008, the art of comedy had a lot more freedoms than it does today. Whether you consider this a pro or con is personal, but I don't think the last episode was transphobic per sé. In fact it's mocking the lack of acceptance & the extreme/over the top denial that Douglas displays after forgetting & being reminded. (which again is more down to him being an idiot than "hating" trans people or anything of the sort).

He BEATS her, he BEATS her! HOW do you not get that that's transphobic? If Jen hit one of her boyfriends and then he beat her till she passed out wouldn't you say it was masogynistic? You are transphobes. You think it's okay to beat transwomen. They aren't women, you can beat them.

@@mellonlord4616 She also hits him plenty during their exchange (which is typical slapstick comedy, nothing inherently hateful or offensive about it really).
