Most Greek men tend to be portrayed as at LEAST bi-curious (as Red from OSP puts it- 'with a wife he likes alright and a boyfriend he likes way more'), but part of Odysseus's whole thing is that he's super faithful to his wife (especially in this version), so any romantic interest is just the interpretation of the animator. Also, Jay specifically says that he gives Odysseus a nylon-string guitar when he's opening up emotionally.

Lol, in this story, Odysseus and Polites are genuinely best friends. Odysseus has only one person in his heart, and that's his Queen Penelope. But Odysseus and Polites have great chemistry.
Yep. And considering how this is Greek mythology and everyone is probably bisexual it wouldn’t be too out of character. Especially after listening to your light. It’s a very nice head cannon and just a fun idea

In the musical, they’re supposed to be childhood best friends, as Odysseus is devoted to his wife Penelope. Though I can see Polites and Odysseus together as a fun headcanon.
The animators get direct inspiration/information from the actual Odyssey story. They do take some artistic liberties here and there ex. the lotus eaters were just humans in the original story. You also made a good connection with Percy Jackson because the lotus casino was also based on this part of the Odyssey story!
Also no one and nothing in greek myth cared about morality, jorge tells his own story about morality follpwing the myth without betraying the source material
I think the thing that stood out to me about this song is you can obviously hear Polites' smile through the singing. He's being so genuine and hopeful to try and get through to Odysseus.
I’m pretty sure that flash at the end of the song was just the next song with Athena happening, she has the ability to sort of freeze time and have whole conversations and flashbacks in an instant! (Or in this case a song)
in the Odyssey, lotus causes people who eat it to be in a state of bliss and never want to leave the island, hence Odysseus stops his men from eating them so they can go home.
I remember when OSP Red was describing Achilles as the epitome of ancient Greek manliness, "with a wife he likes alright and a boyfriend he likes much more." So, it's very possible that he loved Penelope enough to strive this hard to return, and loved Polites as much as well.
@@1mtry1ng_myb3zt I don’t know if the original replier was saying no to the interpretation as being common in Greek Mythology or whether it was just a no in the case of this story (and they could’ve been clearer about that). Because in general, many did, yes. But, in the case of Odysseus, he’s generally portrayed as very faithful to Penelope, and especially so in Epic. I mean, later in the Act, he was able to punch through an enchantment placed on him by Circe with his determination not to cheat on her. And in Act 2, it’s even a plot relevant detail, when Athena convinces the final gauntlet member, Hera, to release him with the *thinly* veiled gut punch to Zeus of, “never once has he cheated on his wife.”
The "flower creatures" are actually officially part of Epic, they're called Winions, and there are even plushies. The Lotus Eaters on the Island of the Lotus Eaters in Homer's _The Odyssey_ are just people.

I would love a collab between you, Mortius and Casper reacting to at least one song! Also, please get distracted by the story- this is a musical after all!
The thing about it being like a side quest is actually something i think about a lot of moments on the musical! Like some songs are more transitory to bigger moments. Since Jorge took a lot of inspiration from videogames, i think it's fitting 😂
the chimes that you're hearing is actually a kalimba, which jay has mentioned when creating the "Open Arms", i think it's his chosen instrument for Polites 🥰💖
You should definitely give "Your Light" a listen for more of Odysseus and Polities's story. It's a cut song from the musical, but it has an animatic and it is worth listening to. Great reaction and I love your commentary! ❤
Don’t know if someone said this, but it’s really cool that you noticed the guitar showing up when Odysseus is singing because Jorge has said that all the characters are represented by different instruments! Odysseus is various guitars, Polites is marimba and other similar instruments, etc.
I like that we hear many different TYPES of guitars for Odysseus, too. Like Peter pointed out in this song, the guitar that comes in when Odysseus points out the fact that they’ve been given lotuses is a little more synth-y, but it’s not the badass electric guitar we get in The Horse and the Infant when he’s being a master strategist…nor is it the gentle acoustic we get when he’s being more emotional. It’s something in between-he’s being gentle to Polites, pointing out that his open arms mantra would be disastrous in this instance, but he’s still being clever and strategic by *noticing* the danger. Everything about the composition of this whole musical feels so *intentional,* and that’s my favorite thing about it.
If you're familiar with Percy Jackson, you'll recognize a lot of stuff in Epic, because "The Sea of Monsters" had a lot of stuff from _The Odyssey_ in it.
Yes! I don't understand why so many people label Ody as gay when his core goal to return to his wife and son. Everyone was upset before full version of There Are Other Ways he might be cheating, yet have no problem shipping him with Polites. Why can't he just have a very close platonic friend?

I love the look on people's faces when I tell them the insanely famous Trojan Horse doesn't appear in the Iliad and barely gets a mention in the Odyssey. (It's featured more in the Aenid, which is Roman literature.)
I would say Polities is Odysseus third most important person for him after Penelope and Telemachus of course (his wife and son) but it safe to say that they are really close and i won't be surprised if Odysseus preferred man, Polities might be his partner after all😂😂😂 but in this story they're just homies frr.
i am so glad you’re reacting to these songs and animations!!!! One recommendation I have is that in the second saga, you watch mircsy’s animatics for “polyphemus”, “survive”, and ESPECIALLY theirs for “my goodbye”. it is amazing!
There are several musical themes to keep an eye out for. One is the danger motive. You noticed the guitar come in, it came in when Odysseus sand his instrument is the guitar range from acoustic when in a normal mind set to electric when his emotions and rage get the better of him. So its fun spotting all the instruments.
But it's normal when you're very close to someone that is a good friend of yours to have that closeness and kind of chemistry but in a friendly and platonical way, people just somehow tend to see all closeness like romance (or possible romance) for some reason (they always have even in the past), like two guys apparently can not be too close to each other or they are gay and there are romantic feelings involved (which is a lie, great friends even with your own sex with which you are too close to and confortable with exist), the same way that it's seen many times with a boy and a girl, like if they are too close being of opposite sexes they can't be just friends or best friends, they have to have romantic feelings for each other, which also isn't true, a man and a woman that aren't blood related can also be very close to each other and love each other platonically, not all closeness or apparent chemistry between two people is romantical, you can also get very well along with someone and have chemistry with someone independently on whether they are a man or a woman but still be a platonical love, someone you deeply love and care about and you would even put your life at risk to protect them but not in a romantical way, it just seems that people aren't able to wrap their heads around that concept and have always had difficulty with that
Or you know people have different perspectives on things. I mean people are still at odds about whether or not Achilles and patroclus were lovers, even though that appears to be the case. Especially in context. Like I get it some people are uncomfortable with how invested some people can get in other peoples relationships. Which can cross the line of inappropriate, and even harmful. But let's not make people seem crazy for thinking two people with chemistry are possibly more than friends. @@doloresgronenberg5882
So basically, the whole percy jackson casino lotus eaters thing comes from the Odyssey, so both stories share/are influenced by the same source material!
Considering Odysseus and Polites are ancient Greeks and it was completely normal to "take comfort" with the band of warriors you'd grown up learning and fighting with you're probably not wrong. It wouldn't have even been considered cheating, it was just a reality of military life and "keeping it in the unit" made sure the soldier wouldn't end up with venereal diseases during campaigns. The neighboring Greek city-state of Sparta was infamous for young brides dressing as a member of their groom's military company complete with shearing their hair off so they could share in the intimate and very physical love their new husband shared with the soldiers in their unit for their wedding night (it was believed there was no greater intimacy than between soldiers and allowing his wife to pretend to be one for their first night together was a great act of love and acceptance) lol. Odysseus' great love of his life is Penelope but there's no denying he also loved Polites dearly.
i think polites and odysseus have a lot of chemistry and in another life they might have been more than friends, but odysseus only has eyes for penelope :)
Fun Fact : There is a popular myth that throwing an apple to a lady in ancient Greece was a way of proposing marriage. Apples were sacred to Aphrodite, goddess of love, and throwing one was considered a declaration of love or even a marriage proposal. I don’t know if the animator knew this when they animated Polites throwing Odysseus an apple there at the end, or how disappointed Polites was when Odysseus drops it after Athena’s “Quick Thought” - but most fans who animate Polites usually make him touchy-feely with Odysseus because they’re childhood best friends. Even though Eurylochus stays with Odysseus the longest in terms of The Odyssey/Epic, animators rarely show the two of them touching besides standing near each other or a hand on the shoulder. That’s because even though Eurylochus is Odysseus’ first mate/second in command and brother-in-law, he’s simply not as close to Odysseus as Polites was.
Hey not sure if you know this the lotus eaters are called winions! They show up on other parts of epic as well and are little tricksters. The lotus eaters aren’t really the same as the winions in the other song they’re in, but jay calls them all winions so it’s good enough for me. In the orginal odyssey the lotus eaters where just some high dudes, so these guys are completely Jorge’s. There basically epics mascot and epic fans often refer to themselves as winions, so If you see people say that, it just means epic fan.
While they are just friends, best friends, even... Odysseus and Polities have clear romantic chemestry. There might have been feelings between then, but in the end, there is only one person for Odysseus, which is Penelope. My take is, as said, They might have had mutual feelings for eachother at one point, but Odysseus' love was won by Penelope rather than Polities. You can be with a person and fall inlove with another, and still remain with the one you're with. It's possible, and not that uncommon.
Just to let you know, your Epic Reaction Playlist has your reaction to Warrior of the Mind placed before Open Arms. It's not the biggest deal if someone watching through it catches it quickly, but it is a little jarring at first.
In the ancient time it was common to see more deep relation with people with same sex. Both man and female part. It was like a relationship where you can learn from people in your same field. In mhytology it was never say if this kind of relationship was more in the romance way but you can feel it sometimes. Like Achilles and Patroclus. In my eyes it's kind of a more deep relationship than romance or esteem
Odysseus and Polities are best friends, not lovers. Why Polities looks at Ody that way is because he has a more youthful perspective on life and is trying to get Ody to lighten up a bit. Head cannon of mine is that after the trama Ody has after killing the baby, Polities realizes this, and this song is Polities way of helping him. Telling him to "greet the world with open arms," like, "hey, these things happen, take it in stride. It's ok!" The great things about the two of them together is how well they balance each other
Yeah, any Odysseus/Polites stuff is really fandom doing what fandom does. Odysseus is WHOLEHEARTEDLY devoted to Penelope, so much so that…well…you’ll find out. And the fan artists’ habit of transplanting the voice actors’ appearances onto the characters’ designs will never not bother me in this particular case. Their habit of giving Polites glasses just because the actor has them when glasses wouldn’t be invented for over two millennia drives my OCD tendencies just a little bit nuts.
The only reason I don't learn anything from your videos is because I have absolutely zero musical experience (or ability, tbh) so all of those terms go right over my head. Even the chords. 😂 Also, I have a TBI, so learning is not as easy as it used to be.
Polites and Odysseus are canonically only best friends..but i actually refuse to believe that polites doesn’t have feelings. Ody only wants Penelope but..come on- look at them 😭🙏
As someone who hates pop music, I reflexively take offense when you say certain things sound like pop music. Pop music is so generic. 🤣 I know what you mean, but when I compare something to pop music, it's an insult. 😅
I hope you watch other Animations. This one is my least favorite for this song. Its good, but not the best imo. I DO, however, love the way this one ties into the next video really well. But other than that, i usually avoid this one.
Odysseus and Polites are more brothers then best friends. That's why they have this close relationship. Polites is more possitive, naiv/blinded wheres Odysseus seems more like the realist. The Lotus people are cannibals. Jorge intended to give them more childish/alienate-voices to make it clear that they're not "normal" humans. Most fan-animators tend to give them globlin-like creatures.
I thought the lotus eater were Winions, and that Jorge had always intended them to be Winions. Especially considering that they ARE in “Keep Your Friends Close,” and they sound the same here; Jorge doesn’t do anything halfway when it comes to this passion project of his, so it makes more sense (to me, at least) that he intentionally changed the lotus eaters from cannibalistic humans to Epic-specific creatures (that he has previously stated exist entirely to cause drama/strife lol).
@@revanhart Well, in the origin Odysseus saga the Lotus eater ARE cannibals. Yes, Jorge made them sounds childlike (or at least very high-pitched) and the animators took that to make their own versions of these creatures according to the sound of the Lotus Eater. Same goes to the Cyclops and so on.

Odysseus' great love of his life is Penelope but there's no denying he also loved Polites dearly.
it took awhile to notice but listening closely one of the lotus eaters say "scary cave"
Just a heads up. This currently comes after Warrior of the Mind on your Epic playlist so parts 4 and 5 of Saga 1 are flipped.
i think polites and odysseus have a lot of chemistry and in another life they might have been more than friends, but odysseus only has eyes for penelope :)
Polites is Odysseus's best friend since childhood.
They're best friends!
Also, the little critters are called Winions!!
In this song, they're Lotus Eaters. The Winions are later
Awesome. Hubby and I always enjoy your analysis. ❤
Whenever you get to The Ocean Saga, you should check out AnniFlamma's animatic for Ruthlessness. It is sooo good!
It's so good! I'm releasing the video I made for AnniFlamma publicly and I made another for Gigi's that's going on my Patreon
@@PeterBarber I can't wait to see it!
While they may be Greek they're not Spartans, Menelaus already went home with Helen 🤣
To learn more about polites and Odysseus i'd say listen to your light!
Just a heads up, Warrior of the mind and open arms are switched in your playlist part 4 is in 5th place and part 5 in 4th
I love your reaction to the jarring shift in the middle 😂🤩🥳
I really hoped youd react to this AND Warrior of the mind, because the songs are right after each other.
It's out now
Mason edits your videos too? Good gods, he's got a lot of work.
Those creatures are "Winions" which essentially replace Aeolus's children
hi! i love watching your commentary to this musical, are you planning on reacting to the whole thing?
Oh hey a Casper and Mortius mention, very cool.
In the musical, Odysseus, Polites, and Eurylochus are just best friends and have been since they were kids. 😊
I reckon you’re gonna love Warrior of the Mind.
nope... just friends, but Polites is practically a spaniel in human form... and in this animatic almost acting like one 😂
I hope he ends up picking out the danger motif
Though to be fair I didnt know there was one till seeing Jorge's tiktok pointing it out
Believe me i want them to be together but Odysseus in greek mythology has a wife and one of his claims to fame is never cheating on her
Just to let you know, your Epic Reaction Playlist has your reaction to Warrior of the Mind placed before Open Arms.
It's ok!"
The great things about the two of them together is how well they balance each other
We stan Mason in this house
I love TH-cam's autocaptions. They're hilariously stupid and wrong. 🤣
Please analyze Erik Grönwall singing “I will always love you”
its partly fan shipping and also they're greek sooooo
The only reason I don't learn anything from your videos is because I have absolutely zero musical experience (or ability, tbh) so all of those terms go right over my head. Even the chords. 😂 Also, I have a TBI, so learning is not as easy as it used to be.
There is no romance they’re just childhood best friends
And they were greek
Interesting 🧐🤔
i kinda ship them ngl
"Are they gay?"
They're Greek. Ancient Greek. Potato, potato.
They are not in love lol
❤
And they were roomates
Jokes aside they're just friends
It was normal for even the most loyal husbands to have war-bfs, so do with that what you will
I don't know why but I always had beef with this song. I think it's great, I just beef with it for no reason 🤷
Polites and Odysseus are canonically only best friends..but i actually refuse to believe that polites doesn’t have feelings. Ody only wants Penelope but..come on- look at them 😭🙏
I actually hate this interpretation of the lotus eaters, because they're just meant to be humans
They childhood friends, fought together for like 10+years and are greek. Should say enough... plus the apple throw & catch greek tradition.
If you read Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters, that book is a loose retelling of the Odyssey! So you may continue to recognize the characters as the musical progresses!
