So despite Henry Selick “directing” the NBC - I think it’s really obvious how integral Burtons influence is to the movie. But I do think it all starts with Burton - it simply doesn’t exist without him.

So I would see a article in the newspaper talking about Coraline and mentioning Tim Burton as the director.
You would think, hope that big animation fans would check more and know that Selick directed it, also James and the Giant Peach (and Roald Dahl including his movies was already pretty big in '90s and then also '00s).
@suarezguy still, "from the director of the Nightmare Before Christmas" put it in the minds of the unaware that Tim Burton directed James and the Giant peach. I had the arguments, i was there 30000 years ago...
The TH-cam algorithm doesn’t do promotion in the traditional way where they will find an audience for videos but, to make meaningful recommendations to users that it feels users will engage with depending on the Individual.

It's frustrating, like wtf man give him the credit he deserves instead of making over half he viewers think it's tim Burton. Say "from Henry Selleck, the director of nightmare before christmas
It's no different than watching Stephen King's IT or Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat. The writer/creator gets the credit, until you can coast like Burton because you're the producer. LOL
FANTASTIC!! I can’t believe the meticulous research that goes into your compelling stories of the world of Disney - and Hollywood - history. When do you sleep?
The fact that Disney tried to back pedal in the merchandise when it first released, only for it to become one of their biggest money makers in merch now…
This whole situation reminds me of Animaniacs and Tiny Toons, where Spielberg gets the majority of the credit, despite for example, not creating the Warners. Seriously, Tom Ruegger doesn't get enough credit.
Unfortunately, a lot of it is the result of companies getting cold feet when test audiences fail to latch onto the product and have to resort to slapping the most popular name involved in the production to garner more attention in hopes of making more revenue.
Isn’t it both of their films?? Selick did the work from Burton’s ideas. That’s why both Stan Lee AND Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko get credits for most of the Marvel characters, because they both contributed.
I really think a lot of the magic for kids in this movie came from watching it with their parents. Almost as if the stuff that might have creeped them out suddenly became safe and, ultimately, fun when mom or dad are showing it to them and enjoying it along with them. My daughter was four or five when we cuddled on the couch and watched it together. She ran with it, loved it, and now, at 31, she still has 'Nightmare' stuff everywhere.
So the truth was it was a little of all of them. No one person, Burton was the author and initial concept designer, Thompson as writer, Elfman giving life to the characters through the music, and Selick as director and animator. Like most films, it wouldn't have been the same without all of the people who had a part in its creation.
The idea for A Nightmare Before Christmas may have come from Tim Burton's mind but with that movie it was a big collaboration, between Tim Burton, Henry Selick and the stop-motion artists, and the music and lyrics of Danny Elfman. Tim Burton gets the highest credit because he was the originator of the idea, so if Henry Selick can't handle that then he needs to never collaborate on another adaptation again and only go with what he comes up with himself, that way the ideas are creator-owned and he receives all of the accolades.
Thank god Tim Burton made this masterpiece! It’s amazing that all of that creativity came from one eccentric man with crazy hair. The world would be genuinely different if nightmare before xmas didn’t spawn from this creatives genius mind. Thank you Tim ❤️

Industry standard is that it’s the director’s film. It’s the director that puts everything together. The only time the line gets blurred is when the producer also writes the film. Think Spielberg with Poltergeist.
23:55 I know it's not supposed to be funny but something about that confetti and sad dying horn sound effect when you said all three, was so hilarious. Lol
Burton came up with the idea when working for Disney. Disney kept the visuals in his file. Years later Burton wanted to revisit it so he produced the film, and came up with the art, Sellick had the team who did the leg work and he was in charge of them. Burton was the producer so he was in charge of Sellick. So it’s Burton’s story told by another guy. I thi k they deserve equal praise since they couldn’t make this by themselves. They really needed each other for this. It’s Sellick’s amazing team and direction, but the story is 100% Burton so personally it’s both party’s imo
Side note: It’s amazing how much Disney has reclaimed the movie… especially in terms of selling merchandise in the theme parks. Oh, and if I’m forced to put one name as the creative force, I’m going with Danny Elfman.
Just put all names, I hate that we all just have to choose one name to credit movies. When it’s usually 2-3 people that are leading the charge when it comes to a producer, a director, and a head writer. Its not even counting the camera crew or the rest but I feel like we should at least normalize acknowledging more of those top roles in the front advertising credits
Henry Selick is to Tim Burton what Ridley Scott was to Dan O’Bannon. There’s no way their ideas would have ever taken flight and become so legendary without very talented filmmakers to make it happen.
if you ask me, it is like the topic of anime films or projects in which is the mangaka creation, but the animation provided by the technical artists that even deserve the credit, case in point, Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura the anime, directed by mainly Mamoru Oshii, makes interesting sense?
To be fair Tim Burton created The Nightmare Before Christmas before it was an actual movie with a poem, while Henry directed the film. So I’ll give them a 50/50.
I'd be surprised if Burton wasn't at least somewhat inspired by Monsters Holiday, one of Boris Pickets follow-ups to Monster Mash, where the Halloween monsters plot to celebrate Christmas and kidnap Santa Claus
What's worse (and I adore Tim Burton so no shade at him at all). Bc Coraline (a movie directed by Henry Selick) was advertised as "from the director of nightmare before Christmas" ppl always think Tim Burton directed Coraline. When in fact, he had nothing to do with Coraline whatsoever lol
It's just the title that's confusing. It's like saying .... ('MICHEAL CRICHTON'S 'JURASSIC PARK') ...also directed by Spielberg, with some help from Stan Winston, ILM & a bunch of others.
Fascinating story! Thank you for going over clickbait titles calmly and fairly and explaining everyone's contribution. My fave part of the movie is definitely the soundtrack and Danny surely deserves more light on him every time the movie comes up! But everyone did an amazing job to bring the story to life and Disney can go choke on a candy cane for it's treatment of creators.
This makes a lot of sense now as to why I've never liked the film. I love other Tim Burton movies and I've tried several times to watch Nightmare Before Christmas and while it's a beautiful movie, I never could get into it. Now I know why. Thanks.
All three contributed greatly, but, at the end of the day, the film is Burton's baby. He had been working on it since the '80s, and he was the movie's lead creative. Selick may have directed, but Burton had the final say on everything. The story, world, and characters are Burton's (fun fact - Jack Skellington made his first appearance as a cameo in Beetlejuice). That all being said, I do think Selick ought to get credit for directing. I tend to credit both Burton and Selick whenever I'm discussing the film.
Industry standard is that its the directors movie. Producers are there at the very beginning but they dont get credit for the overall movie. Its always the director. Tim made bones but all the meat and potatoes of this movie was done by sellick and the writer caroline. Burton wasn’t even in town for the majority of this film’s production as mentioned in the video. If you dont realize how much the director does then its easy to confuse this. But they make all artistic and story choices. It would have never existed with burton. But it would have never existed the way it does without sellick. He literally did 90% of the work.
It's kind of a shame. It's not even really anything they did wrong. It was caused by fan misunderstandings and marketing fumbles that they had no part in. Which they then got emotionally attached to
steve jobs did very little inventing of apple products, but he was the face of the company and the marketing genius which isn't a position that should be taken too lightly (in this case)
Tims idea, Tim invented the look, the story and the characters. he cast the film and is the one who developed the songs with Elfman and the screenplay with Thompson. He did the same things with 'Frankenweenie' and 'Corpse Bride' where he also was not the day-to-day director shooting the film but had final approval of everything and is credited as co-director. Selick was the animation director who did the hard yards of bringing it all to life. A major contribution and he should be credited as co-director but it's fundamentally Tim Burtons vision brought to life, not Selicks.
I mean the OG story and characters are definitely Tim’s…but Henry did all of the heavy lifting and bulk of the work on the film and definitely doesn’t get enough credit for it.
I remember seeing this in theaters as a teen. I thought the world and songs were amazing but the story and the way it was all pieced together was hap-hazard. Still very unique and can be fun to watch.
View it like "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" or "Bram Stoker's Dracula" from the 90s. They wrote the books...didn't direct the movies. Just the title of the film.
It's amazing how the movie got started without even a working script. Even to where 10 songs had been recorded. I think it's sad that in all this argument about whether the creator/producer, the director, or the composer deserve the most credit that the writer isn't put in contention. Sure Caroline Thompson came along later to the party but so much about what makes that movie work is the dialogue and the movie would have easily failed without her talent and creativity Burton, Selick, Elfman, and Thompson
My dad took me to see this in theaters. I was about 12 and it blew me away. I watch it on Halloween every year, my kids loved it too. I know they say it was initially received badly but I remember pre teens were into it. The same age group that made Monster High popular, go figure.
The fault lies with Disney executives who decided to put Tim's name before the title because they felt it would draw in more people after the success of his recent movies. Tim didn't ask to have his name put there. I can totally understand why Henry and his team would feel hurt by this.
When the composer of a musical is quoted saying “it’s 100% Tim’s” I think the answer it’s pretty clear. Henry its an amazing director but he was playing with other people’s toys.
A similar debate happened with The Empire Strikes Back. Lucas wrote the story. The script was by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan (with some uncredited help by Lucas) and it was directed by Irvin Kershner.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a Francis Ford Coppola movie, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet is a Baz Luhrmann film, thus Tim Burton’s The Nightmare before Christmas must be a Henry Selick film
I've had people try to argue with me about who directed this movie and I just tell them, go check the credits. Also the fact that it's not strictly a spooky Halloween movie. Jack is trying to get away from Halloween and be immersed in the joy and everything of Christmas.
It always baffles me how this film wasn’t initially liked by young audiences. My little played the movie at 4 or 5 & LOVED it! And she was a standard Disney Princess kinda girl. When we finally went to Disney World when she was 5, the only people we waited in line to see was Jack & Sally! And this was ALL her, she was NOT missing her moment to meet them!
Was Tim's short story and co producer, Jorgans final character design which was heavily influenced on Tim's initial artwork, Caroline wrote the script and helped set the story boards and Selick was director/producer.. They all had a hand in creating this world. As if who truly owns it legally it would be Burton..
This is so crazy, for the past couple days, I've been thinking who's film TNBC was. And was thinking it was all three, because without Tim there weould have been story or vibe, without Danny there would have been no story to flesh out, and without Henry there would have been no visuals, or film. This video just popped up today for me.
Whether he was there to hover and look over everyones shoulder or do something else because he trusts the team isn't of the question. The movie was his brain-child and his leadership style doesn't put into question whether the story or character designs would ever exist without him directly coming up with them himself. I dont think Henry would be happy with your answer that all of them made the movie.
Tim Burton drew the characters, wrote the story, did all of the design details, drew the sets, and is responsible for all of the production techniques to be used. Tim Burton made The Nightmare Before Christmas. The confusion comes from the fact that stop motion animation takes such a long time that Burton did other projects while photography was being done. It is similar to Irvin Kershner or Richard Marquand are credited as directors of Empire and Jedi. Lucas was filming the special effects, creating all of the design elements, editing and basically helping the "directors" who were directing the actors while Lucas was working on everything else. So Sellick was a hired gun to film Burton's vision. Lucas was generous with crediting their contributions - but it's his film.
It works like the Marvel movies. Marvel owns the characters, world, IP, all that. It's not "Joss Whedon's The Avengers" because Joss Whedon only directed it, he didn't have a hand in conceptualising The Avengers. It's nothing personal against Henry Sellek, but the fact is, Tim Burton was a bit of a name in the early 90s, not a household name, but someone with a few projects under his belt that families would be familiar with. Sellek didn't, doesn't exactly have that popularity, and when trying to market an incredibly niche movie, when trying to sell people on making a movie, you might need to give the audience a bit of a nudge by using a name people know. Henry Sellek wants credit for having directed this, while aping off Tim Burton's style, to the point where it's indistinguishable from Burton. It's Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas because he created the world, the characters, the look, the style guide, and knew the guy who would do the music for it. It's his thing, he just didn't direct it.
They all get their own credits. Thats why credits like "composer", "producer", "director", "story by", and "writer" all exist. The question "who gets "the credit" for it" is too nebulous, and "Tim Burton's" was obviously more for marketing than a credit. It's the film, in earnest, belongs to Disney.
For YEARS I disparaged Burton and those that insisted Nightmare was his film. This dive has made me recant my opinion. Now, Selick definitely deserves all the credit for the legwork and the direction, but it certainly seems like it was Burton’s vision. That said, I don’t think it’s fair to credit anyone the way you would in a live action film. So, to say it’s all of theirs seems the most fitting.
I've always had the opinion that it's Tim Burton production by design but the one truly responsible behind the overall direction and who really made the film what it is was Henry Selick. There are two sides of the same coin and in many ways are equally as important but I think Henry's contribution is far more significant.
Based on Tim Burton's concepts, drawings and general direction WITH Danny Elfmans's songs AND Caroline Thompson's efforts to string it together into a coherent story makes TNBC story even possible. Yeah Henry directed it and HIS team made the models and shot it all but its not like Henry created anything him and his team were shooting. Remember Henry was hired BY Tim Burton for this film. Remember a key detail here is that TNBC tanked when it opened, meaning Tim Burton's name was on it when it tanked. I think it was only when the film gained traction after, before Disney wanted it back, Henry realized that he wouldn't get the recognition for it and then began complaining. Henry has had a great career before and since, he hasn't recognized he was only a part of the bigger picture. Its Tim's.
Tim Burton created the world and characters, developed the songs with Danny Elfman and produced the movie. In Hollywood a director is often just a work-for-hire job to bring the producer's ideas to life, and a creative producer is as much, if not more, creatively in charge. In this case, Henry Selick was hired to handle the day job of bringing Tim Burton's ideas to life.
It's too bad that Selick isn't more recognized for it but with it having characters created by Burton after he directed Batman, let alone also Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, let alone also a second even more recent Batman film, he had to know the film would be marketed, and even reviewed, yes as from the director of Batman.
I think there’s a quest in western cinema to really find a single individual responsible for the work of hundreds of people. While egos generally inflate over time and people claim all credit, as cinema goers are not directly connected to these people or to their interpersonal dramas, we should accept that Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas, like any other film, was a collective team effort between not just 3 people, but hundreds of talented individuals all sharing in a collective vision. Whose vision was that? Mostly Tim Burton’s and Danny Elfman’s sure, but Selick kept the boat on track and heads of every department and everyone underneath them worked to keep everything cohesive in order to create the film that we have today

they promoted James and the Giant Preach the same way
@@MorganMcGinnis Tim Burton did also produce that (although as favor to Selick, really not claiming credit for it overall).
@suarezguy still, "from the director of the Nightmare Before Christmas" put it in the minds of the unaware that Tim Burton directed James and the Giant peach. I had the arguments, i was there 30000 years ago...
Tim Burton: the aesthetic, the style
Henry Selick: the art motion and development, the life
Danny Elfman: the vibe, the music, the energy
Without Elfman, the movie would not be a masterpiece
"What's This?"
The story Caroline Thompson actually Tim Burton only made the concept but didn’t write the screenplay we enjoy
Tim Burton just gave the idea, the history is not his also it was written by a woman i dont remember her name.
The youtube algorithm makes no sense. How is it not promoting this video more, its ridiculous.
Thanks! I'm just glad to see that you and others who do watch are enjoying it!
It is now found him from arglorithm
The TH-cam algorithm doesn’t do promotion in the traditional way where they will find an audience for videos but, to make meaningful recommendations to users that it feels users will engage with depending on the Individual.

6 months later and it’s finally doing its job- this kept popping up for me the past few days so i finally clicked on it😂
Tim made the story, Selick made the visuals, and Elfman gave the movie its soul with music and songs.
Well, technically, Tim Burton made the visuals too, in his iconic style! Selick directed the story and how it would be shown!
Three Men and a Baby.
Disney would have animated it just fine
its why people got confused when James and the Giant Peach came out, when they touted it as "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF TNBC" everything thought it was another tim burton story. but when it was indeed the DIRECTOR, Henery.
Same thing with Coraline
James and the giant peach was amazing. So was coraline. Monster house was cool too
It's frustrating, like wtf man give him the credit he deserves instead of making over half he viewers think it's tim Burton. Say "from Henry Selleck, the director of nightmare before christmas
Tim made the story (it was a book before a movie), Henry directed the film, that's what I've heard all these years as a TNBC fan
The poem was published in a book format after the film’s release.
The screenplay was written by Caroline Thompson. Burton laid the foundation for the story, but the story as it is in the film wasn't conceived by him.
Henry selick also made James and the giant peach. Also one of my favorite movies.
seeing different shots of elfman through the past 25 years is hilarious, it's like he's dressed up and plays a different character each clip
It's no different than watching Stephen King's IT or Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat. The writer/creator gets the credit, until you can coast like Burton because you're the producer. LOL
Tims concept,poem and art
Elfmans soundtrack and music
Selicks Directing and wonderful animation.
to make 1 legendary film.
FANTASTIC!! I can’t believe the meticulous research that goes into your compelling stories of the world of Disney - and Hollywood - history. When do you sleep?
Thanks so much!
The fact that Disney tried to back pedal in the merchandise when it first released, only for it to become one of their biggest money makers in merch now…
I mean, blame the winnie little kids who hated it on the first screening
This whole situation reminds me of Animaniacs and Tiny Toons, where Spielberg gets the majority of the credit, despite for example, not creating the Warners. Seriously, Tom Ruegger doesn't get enough credit.
Unfortunately, a lot of it is the result of companies getting cold feet when test audiences fail to latch onto the product and have to resort to slapping the most popular name involved in the production to garner more attention in hopes of making more revenue.
Directors get too much credit in general, when screenwriting is way more important.
I appreciate you for still cooking your videos and going if some fare well more then they otheres but they’re all are very well researched,,, you’re good at picking things I’ve never seen discussed or discussed to this amount of detail YURT

Thanks - I really appreciate that! Slowly but surely getting there...
Industry standard is that it’s the director’s film. It’s the director that puts everything together. The only time the line gets blurred is when the producer also writes the film. Think Spielberg with Poltergeist.
Tell me you didn’t watched the video without telling me you didn’t watch the video
23:55 I know it's not supposed to be funny but something about that confetti and sad dying horn sound effect when you said all three, was so hilarious. Lol
Ha! Who says it's not supposed to be funny?
Burton came up with the idea when working for Disney. Disney kept the visuals in his file. Years later Burton wanted to revisit it so he produced the film, and came up with the art, Sellick had the team who did the leg work and he was in charge of them. Burton was the producer so he was in charge of Sellick. So it’s Burton’s story told by another guy. I thi k they deserve equal praise since they couldn’t make this by themselves. They really needed each other for this. It’s Sellick’s amazing team and direction, but the story is 100% Burton so personally it’s both party’s imo
Exactly. It’s like George Lucas didn’t direct Episode 5 & 6 but there still his movies
@@TeamTheme right. He was there he overlooked everything but Ivan and Patrick directed them

Did growing up in Southern California just make people weird?
as someone that grew in SC and with this movie and some of Tim's other works
yea pretty much
As someone from LA, yes. It's very chaotic over here
Side note: It’s amazing how much Disney has reclaimed the movie… especially in terms of selling merchandise in the theme parks.
Thanks man, really enjoy your content
Thanks! So glad you're enjoying everything!
One of the best video essays I’ve ever seen on this topic. WOW
if you ask me, it is like the topic of anime films or projects in which is the mangaka creation, but the animation provided by the technical artists that even deserve the credit, case in point, Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura the anime, directed by mainly Mamoru Oshii, makes interesting sense?
Totally!
We all know what it looks like when Tim Burton directs a stop-motion musical - and Corpse Bride sucks balls!!
So it's Boris Pickets movie as much as Burton's...
So glad you enjoyed this one!
Which they then got emotionally attached to
My kids always burst singing "what's this?!" Every time we ask the question.
steve jobs did very little inventing of apple products, but he was the face of the company and the marketing genius which isn't a position that should be taken too lightly (in this case)
This channel needs to be recognized more!
Thanks so much!
I cant imagine this movie without Edward Gorey and Edgar Alan Poe
Excellent documentary job 👌✌️❤
I think he finally got the credit he deserves with Coraline. IMO. That movie is a masterpiece of art.
It's amazing how the movie got started without even a working script. Even to where 10 songs had been recorded.
I think it's sad that in all this argument about whether the creator/producer, the director, or the composer deserve the most credit that the writer isn't put in contention. Sure Caroline Thompson came along later to the party but so much about what makes that movie work is the dialogue and the movie would have easily failed without her talent and creativity
Burton, Selick, Elfman, and Thompson
My dad took me to see this in theaters. I was about 12 and it blew me away. I watch it on Halloween every year, my kids loved it too. I know they say it was initially received badly but I remember pre teens were into it. The same age group that made Monster High popular, go figure.
Sad that some people don't get that a lot of films are very collaborative.
Tim is that kid during a group project that does 10% of the work and takes all the credit anyway.
a sponsored video!! this channel is getting bigger and bigger! love the content man keep it up!
Thanks so much! I'm always terrified that viewers will be turned off to them, so I appreciate the love!
I'm sure Disney saw the same thing in Tim as they saw in Rolly Crump
It clearly was a collaboration of very talented people based on a 3 page poem.
Halloween is universally my favorite holiday.
The fault lies with Disney executives who decided to put Tim's name before the title because they felt it would draw in more people after the success of his recent movies. Tim didn't ask to have his name put there. I can totally understand why Henry and his team would feel hurt by this.
Tim Burton wrote the book it was based off and its script. He deserves as much credit as Henry selick
New to your channel, you've definitely earned a subscriber...
I was in grade school when this film came out and it was exactly what I needed as a kid.
Amazing video 🙉 subscribed
Slow Bob and the Lower Dimension looks like it would have been my fave show.
Meanwhile the other producers who helped make the movie: OUR MOVIE
just watched the movie at el capitan theatre today! it’s the best way to watch it in 4D
Danny Elfman is the epitome of why dad said to me as kid that when people get older they cut their hair shorter.
Tim Burton didn’t write Corpse Bride either - it’s a Jewish folk story from The Pale.
Seeing Henry Selick for the first time, he actually moves like his characters and it's fascinating
It's kind of like the controversy over Poltergeist. People don't seem to understand a movie can belong to more than one person.
SPECTACULAR fun and so informative! I'll follow your voice anywhere...
So glad you enjoyed it!
I’m not a Disney fan but you’re making me want to subscribe to Disney +. Excellent videos!!!
Thanks so much!
It’s Danny Elfman’s movie. Nothing touched by Disney has as many bangers as this movie. Ever song is gas.
