Ken Dodd was the president of my theatre group. He used to come every year to do two free gigs to help raise funds. His aim was to perform every small theatre in the country to promote live entertainment. No one ever got out of the theatre till 1/2 a.m., he would go on by himself for hours. I know he had taxman issues, but boy, what a force of nature. A night watching him live left you gasping for breath😂

Ken Dodd is a lesson to the comedians of today... you can be hilarious without resorting to swearing, being derogatory, offensive, or rude.

Swearing means nothing, golly, my word, well ill bee, etc. Are used exactly the same way as fuck, shit or cunt !
If you find them problematic, it is not the words,,,, Its you, you endow them with more meaning then they actually have. So if you find it hard to enjoy comics using swearwords, grow the fuck up, they are just words , not magical incantations of evil doing !

When you saw Ken live you never got out early. He would just keep going. I think a lot of the theatre managers used to get fed up waiting to go home they would chuck the keys onto the stage and tell him to lock up when he was finished. RIP Ken.

Hi E.B., great to see you enjoying more of Ken. He took his craft very seriously & made notes about how well each joke in each performance went. He & Bob Monkhouse are the only two comedians I know of, who kept books of jokes. Ken also studied the humour of the different British regions & tailored his jokes accordingly. There are 2 (An Audience with..) shows with Ken as the star, in front of a British celebrity packed audience.

As has been said Ken Dodd famously ran over time at every live performance he did. A 2 hour gig at 8pm nsy well still be going at midnight and beyond. It was pointless booking a taxi home because you never knew when he'd finish. Theatres knew they were in for a late night when he was on.
He was a UK legend, the like of which genuinely will never be seen again. Comedian, singer, actor and a thoroughly decent chap.

Sir Kenneth Arthur Dodd OBE, was the last of the GREAT music hall comedians in the UK, I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live twice. ❤
If you like Ken, try another fantastic British music hall comedian, the late “Max Miller”. He absolutely packed the theatres to the rafters. 😂😂😂

Now, the other Ken Dodd that I would certainly recommend is the 'Ken Dodd Medley'. The length of this particular one is six minutes and forty nine seconds and is a clip from an hour-long programme called 'An Audience With Ken Dodd'. Here he demonstrates his - not unimpressive! - singing prowess and brilliant comedic timing which had an audience of invited pros in the business and admirers in stitches!

    • @Sheffield_Steve

Then there was "Another Audience with Ken Dodd"
A funny but beautiful moment in this was if he would sing a song without pulling funny faces. He began singing "The Very Thought of You" but began pulling funny faces when he hears a trumpet playing in between the lyrics. Which you find at the end it was the Lady Mayoress playing along with him. 👍

Ken Dodd had only one fault, he didn’t have an off button. He could sellout a theatre for his one man shows and without a supporting act, he could walk on the stage at around 19:00 hours and still be performing at 01:00 hours the next morning. Theatre Managers would plead with him to keep his performances down to 5 hours and still have to close the curtains on him to get him off stage so that the audience would leave and the staff could clean the theatre for the next performance, even if it was Ken on the next show of his tour, or a totally different show. He occasionally would do a show that would be broadcast as a part of an old time music hall where the audience as well as the musicians and the rest of the theatre staff were all dressed up in Victorian or Edwardian costumes. The show was called “The Good Old Days “ and it was filmed at the City Variety Hall, in Leeds, West Yorkshire and because it had to be fitted into the TV schedule they were the only performances that he would keep to his allotted time on stage, but even then he sometimes would come back on stage after the recording was finished and do an extra unrecorded performance or he might sing a song or two as he was a very good singer as well as a comedian and children’s entertainer.

Oh my goodness I am in the UK and I haven’t heard that one 😂😂😂😂. We saw him 3 times in a theatre, we went to the second house which was a good move as he over ran his shows, we got back to our house at 1am😳🤣, my aunt was babysitting, she wondered what had happened, this was way way before mobile phones. In his autobiography the stage manager would throw the keys onto the stage and tell Ken to lockup, being Ken this was probably a made up story, but then again was it? He even picked me out of the show to speak to me, also our daughter at another show. Such a lovely funny man, when asked why he ran over his time when he was on a chat show, he replied that folk were spending their hard earned cash to come and see him, bless him, never another like him

He also did 2 shows on TV for “An Audience With” where an artist had to perform to an audience of celebrities who got to ask them questions. So look out for An Audience With Ken Dodd and Another Audience With Ken Dodd.

This was to remind ken he had to come off the stage, as they wanted to go home.
Saw him twice, the same thing happened. The amount of jokes he knew, one liners too. But he would forget to come off lol.

I saw him in the early 60s when he was simply a turn, listened to his radio shows, watched his TV shows, lived a mile or so from his house/bank for a year. He truly was a great. The BBC had a series of shows in a "musical hall" with the typical acts, which are available on TH-cam -"The Good Old Days". Lots of favourites doing old acts, singing, comedy, juggling etc in a Leeds theatre with the audience dressed appropriately. Worth watching to see Ken Dodd (and others) playing off the audience.

Apart from being a great comedian, he was a fine singer - he had 18 Top 40 hits in the UK, “Tears” topped the charts for 5 weeks in 1965 and was the third-best-selling single in Britain in the whole of the 1960s (and think how much competition there was then!).
There’s also a statue of him on the main concourse of Liverpool Lime Street railway station.

I'm so glad you know Ken Dodd. That's gonna come in handy in a future Still Game episode. The joke would be quite lost if you didn't know the reference.

Im not sure what year it was, as i wasn't born, but one year Ken Dodd outsold and had more hit songs than the Beatles.
And the Beatles really loved him, both being from Liverpool, and he loved them, not as much as he hated the Tax man, but thats another story 😁😁😁

Ken was just a comical Genius, you wont find anyone with a bad word to say about him here in Liverpool. One of his funniest shows is with a celebrity guest audience, people like Billy Connolly and Ringo star were invited and it`s just hilarious, well worth a look 👍👍

Ken Dodd once admitted that he often made up jokes live on the stage and once he'd told them; his agent would write them down so the joke wouldn't be forgotten.

Ken Dodd , absolute master of comedy , saw him many times. If you want an alternative British Comedian with a funny clip , type Bernard Manning Snuff Joke , another British icon of comedy
