    the way i kinda unpack this one.... is different then most i think..... i see it more as nate looking at his past at how he has "drowned" up until the moment he "lets go" of the traumas.. but for most people they never learn to "let go" of that.. so we find out its nate at the end... as if he spent his whole life.. focused on how he was "let down/and a let down himself to the parent".. til he became stagnant and his life never took off. there is often times 2 type of men... ones who live in the future (one day i will.....) and ones who live in the past (i miss the old days.....).. the best balance is the present.. not past.. nor future.. but attached in the moment we are currently experiencing. #LoveOverEverything

      I agree,
      I think this song ties directly to the song "Nate," because they both reach into his past, the then present with it's feelings of failure and desperation as well as the future where he laments over the feelings of "would have, could have, should have," that we all will contemplate at some juncture in our lives. Listen to both in succession, and you'll see the tie-in. So many angles and facets to this man's art.

      You aren't alone with your take on this video. My first thought that it was him looking back on his life... Water is the reflection and I believe symbolizes the entire video. IMHO ❤❤❤

      I love the perspective, I also think there is a symbolism there to if he doesn’t get out of that mental hamster wheel that he’s going to be that older self reliving the moments of his life where he let his self down and it was detrimental to his path and his state of mind as his older self. Also why I think he can only sit and watch the events but not have any influence on them. Reminds me of Ebeneezer Scrooge. When he is with the ghosts of the past, present and future, watching his choices and actions unfold before him but has no power to change any of it until he gets back to the present. So powerful. But all of our perspectives can be super powerful and inspiring is why nf is so good at what he does because we are having these conversations and bouncing perspectives off of each other. Great reaction and comment. Have a blessed holiday weekend

    This will forever be one of my favorites because of the message. It’s Nate as a mature adult apologizing to his younger self. The symbolism in him watching himself die knowing he could stop it but choosing not to is so incredibly beautiful and I personally think this song is his most relatable song for most people as crazy as that is to say,

    YES!! This was awesome... it shows the REAL tattoo on his forearm and his wife calls out "Nathan". Remember the man in the cage in HOPE? Nathan is a genius when it comes to connecting everything. His music is an autobiography of his life... that's why the journey is so important. You wouldn't read chapter 3, then 11, then 1, then 8 in a book... his music is like a book to music and videos. I think the imagery of having the old man version of Nate goes as far back as Mansion as well, where he said "I regret watching these trust issues eat me alive, and at the rate I'm going they'll probably still be there when I die."

  • @markb4021
    @markb4021 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    NF/Nathan being the old man, as revealed in the final seconds of the video is ALL about NF's old self (ie. younger NF). Elderly NF is allowing his old self to die. If you are are believer or not, dying to one's old self is a core tenet of growth in Christianity. Elderly NF is a father to his old younger self that still resides in his mind (or flesh if you will), it follows him around. In a way we all are the parent over our past, our past habits and thoughts all started with us, and can stay with us. Nathan as a Christian HAS to take up his cross daily, to put to death his OLD self in order to continue to become his NEW self. NF is not proud of his past-he has to "let" his old self/flesh "down" into its grave.
    Colossians 3:5-11:
    "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."

    For myself, I see this is a song of regret. The first time I heard this meaningfully put to music was in a song called Someone Else? by Queensryche as the coda for their concept album Promised Land (if you do that reaction, make sure you do the stripped down version with just the piano).
    It's natural to look back to how we lived and wish we would have done better. In true NF style, he's continued his capture of the human experience in this beautiful vignette. The juxtaposition of dying by drowning (despair) vs burning (passion) strikes me as contemplation of different paths one may have taken ultimately still ending in tragedy. Having set aside his avenues to accomplishment/recognition via "self-destruction for art" allowed him to live a full life, but also time to reflect on "what might have been".

    Summarizes over a decade of my life. Let myself down, let others around me down. How it feels to perceive yourself as incompetent and incapable (my experience at least). This summarizes the majority of my experience with functioning differently than most people in a world designed almost the opposite of what I need to thrive, or simply be able to function at a "normal" level, as well as highlighting some of the common responses to my difficulty functioning. At least, the level the we are taught is a normal level, and certainly the level required to be able to survives without specific assistance that one with my ability to function shouldn't need, and therefore, to this day, has been impossible to get.

    24And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” 26He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. 27The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” Love!
