You CAN SHARPEN your garden tools EASILY and quickly

- This is a quick and easy guide to sharpen your garden tools. It's absolutely for beginners (without fuss or drama) or just those who need a refresher. Let's keep things super simple and sharpen your secateurs, shears, and more - a guide for everyone.
There are two types of sharpening, you can go in for the expert level with flat-based sharpening stones and get the most beautiful, mirror edge that you can shave with or we can go down the practical "field sharpening" route where we can sharpen quickly and easily making sure we always have a sharp tool for the job, even when we are knee-deep in pruning.
I'm going to take the fear, complications, and fuss out of sharpening your garden tools and show you that we can all manage our tools so that we always get a cut rather than a crushed stem.
▶TOOLS I RECOMMEND FOR SHARPENING◀
SHARPAL Pocket sharpener I use in this video: amzn.to/3EBb81a
SHARPAL multi sharpener, this does lots of different types of blades easily. I use this on my hedging shears as well as secateurs, knives and more: amzn.to/3i7huMQ

Excellent tutorial. You are a very good teacher. It pains me that we've lost so many of this type of life skill. IMO, everyone should know how to do basic sharpening. Dull tools are dangerous and darned aggravating to use...Sharp tools are a joy to use!
Oh I agree sharp tool make life so much easier I’ve lost a lot of these skills too… I used to be a woodworker(many moons ago) but these days I wouldn’t be able to sharpen a chisel of a plane 😢.
I have been complaining for a long time about how fast my tools get dull. I keep saying I need to take a class, well this is it! I've learned to sharpen my blades and order the tool on Amazon. Thank you, thank you, great simple, informative, funny video. I've subscribed and look forward to the coming gardening season her in California USA
Yay!!! Glad it has helped 👏👏👏
This was a very good, no fuss sharpening instructional and entertaining to watch. I use a cheap ($10), slender diamond grit pen that's conical on one end and flat on the other. Keeping the flat side flat on your blade is just as important as the beveled edge. Up until 3 years ago I've been using an antique pair of secateurs but the rusty old things became too loose to cut reliably. My new pair is nearly identical in design to yours and unpainted. Reading reviews I worried about rust. It takes less than 5 min to wipe off any plant sap with hot water and mild soap after each use while taking as much care to dry them after. They remain rust and stain free after 3 years of heavy use, even in the pivot joint. When putting them away for the season I use an old carpenters trick used for bare metal machinery tables - furniture paste wax (NOT the spray can stuff). It's been a great rust inhibitor. I've never oiled my secateurs as I understand oils can contaminate plants. Furniture paste wax is essentially non toxic. Hope you find that works for you as well as it has for me.
Fellow Scot here. I was pretty much despairing of the state of all my garden blades and began watching videos on how to rescue my Felcos - they're the only ones small enough and comfortable enough for my tiny, aging hands. I probably do need to take my old pair apart, completely clean (including the rust ...), sharpen, replace the spring and put them back together again, but I'd just ordered another pair as insurance, with spare parts. Thanks to your video, I realise I don't need to make this a "big thing" and I should receive my wee sharpener in the mail tomorrow. Turning over a new leaf here and will hopefully not be wrangling with secateurs and loppers with blunt blades this year. I'm no longer going to just bung them in a trug, covered in all sorts of nastiness and leave them to fester in the garage. Happy gardening in 2024.
oh that's brilliant!
That makes me so happy!
Just was searching on how to sharpen our clippers/snips/whatever. Great video!!! Thank you
Glad you found us Marcus and more importantly that it was useful 😀
Ordered the sharpener and pretty sure I subscribed. Lol! Guess I better check
😂😂😂
This is exactly what I needed to sharpen my garden tools and my skills. Thank you for giving such clear instructions with a fantastic sense of humor. Oh, and I promise to hold to your "rule" of making it sound a lot more difficult. I can hardly wait to say "burr" and "honing edge" when I talk about how I've repaired all the tools. 🤣
😂😂😂 the first time you say honing edge Jennifer, my job is done 😍😍😍
Hi, I assumed I could not sharpen my own tools before watching your vid. I am now a sharpening fool looking for anything in the house, thank you.
Ha ha ha oh that’s brilliant.
It’s mad when you think about it, how many of us think we can’t sharpen tools… when it’s so easy.
I blame all those videos that make it look so complicated
Thank you, Eli! One click and I’ve got that nifty tool in my Amazon cart here in the States. Plus, I have a clue about a task I never realized I could accomplish without fancy sharpening tools!
Oh that’s brilliant news.
Trust me, it’s life changing, I’ve never had to sharpen my own tools since I made this video… Kate does it now 😂
Had a laugh with you and this 67 yearold single lady learned how to sharpen my favorite pruners. Thank you from Texas!
Yay… glad it came in useful 😍
I just did this for the first time ever on all of these I have, my snips and loppers too. You explained this so well especially how to hold them and how to tell if you have a burr. Thx
Oh that's awesome Rebecca 👌
I love your video made me giggle when your Shaking shears at camera and your comments. But I needed this video and now I'm grabbing my mom's and my shears here i go a sharpening day. 🙂
You go sort them Martha 😍😍😍
Thanks Eli, I only started gardening recently and wondered what bypass secateurs were and how to sharpen my tools. Win win! 😊
Oh bonus.... you are sorted on both counts 😀
Thank you so much for this video. I have moved into a house with a nice garden and was thinking - how am I ever going to keep it looking good. My tools were old and second hand. So I searched for help and found this wonderful helpful video! Thank you so much!❤
And now they can be shiny and new!! 😍😍😍
Thanks. Love the portability of the sharpener so I used your link and bought one. I’ll pop it in my pocket whenever I’m using a blade. I remember watching my dad scything the grass and sharpening often…that’s the secret to easy cutting, he used to say.
It absolutely is
Thank you for this video. Straight to the point and some humor and I learned a lot!
If you learned to sharpen your own tools then I’m chuffed 😀😀😀
Cool, just used a small fine file and some 300 grit sandpaper and it's sharp AF now. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the video. Genuinely love your accent.
Thank you. 🤗🤗🤗 I spent a good bit on those trimmers, and I really intend to use them for the rest of my life. You have helped me follow that dream with less frustration.
Wonderful! My job is done then cause that's all I wanted! Hurrah for keeping our pruners in tip top condition without having to pay someone else!!!!
Excellent instructions and a touch of humour -- just the way I like it! Thank you!
Glad to help 😂
Thank u for your explanation of the sharpening tool. I have ordered it.
Thank you for showing me. i'm 76 female and need to know things like this. x
And now you do… what’s next??? 😍
Great tutorial! I bought the tool you used and it works well. Loved your style of teaching, it was very reassuring and fun! Thank you from Wisconsin, USA
Glad it was helpful Karen
That’s awesome
First of all I am buying a plane ticket so I can hop the pond and soon as you and Kate (I think lol) send me an address! Put me to work 😂 that accent is is the shit lol I LOVE IT! Second, you crack me up, so I am giggling while trying to pay attention! I have to get busy this morning but I’ll be back! Thank for the help with learning to sharpen my own tools 💪🏻
😂😂😂😂 glad we can give you a giggle AND sneakily teach you by stealth too
It was so simple but your video gives us the courage to do something new . Thank you for thinking of another great help in the garden
Yay!!!!!
Hello from Fennville, Michigan!!! I AM IN LOVE WITH YOUR CHANNEL. I left a comment on another video, the one about cutting store bought basil, and how to keep them growing, and I am so happy that I found you and your channel. Thank you for your knowledge of gardening and sharing it with me...us...the world. I love your accent and love listening to you speak, that and the knowledge of your skills. Thank you so much,.It makes it so much easier for me to look forward to getting outside on our 2.5 acre land and look at my "garden" and work on my gardening skills. Now with the weather turning cold here, I will have to watch your videos from the first one to last one and take notes. (I will from now on call you Professor Eli).
To you and Kate: Stay safe and Stay Healthy.
Morning Tavo
it's so lovely to have you on board and this was a fabulous comment for me to wake up to this morning :) I went hunting but couldn't see your previous comment on the basil video :( booooo
But so happy to have you hear now :)
I laughed at Professor Eli, not sure how that would go down with my colleagues though :) Here Professor is a very senior academic position, way, way, way more senior than I am - I'm much more on a TA level ha ha ha ha. but I'll take the compliment.
I suspect Michigan has much colder winters than we do. Our problem in Scotland is more that it's colder all year - even our summers aren't particularly hot, but we get A LOT of rain, so it's cold and wet and grey... a particular challenge for gardening :)
Now I do have to check... are you a spartan or a blue?
You will see my spartan hat in some of the videos :)
Wonderful clear, helpful instructions - many thanks.
Glad it's been useful😀
Thank you
I just start doing this thanks for the info
What lovely, friendly information. Thank you
Glad to help Guy
Thank you. Cool little sharpening tool. 🙂
Always handy in my pocket…
Useful information to have! - there’s nothing better than having a really sharp pair of secateurs! ✂️ 🌿🙂
Indeed, or rather nothing more infuriating than blunt ones.
I recommend resin solvent for cleaning secateurs. Bought online or from gardening/tree surgery trade retailers.👍😇
Love your style! Thanks for the great video - I learned so much!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Glad you found it useful
Such useful information and I love that you always make the information entertaining as well!
Glad you are enjoying things 😀
Bought the tool. Thank you so much for the easy (and entertaining) explanation. :)
Hope it’s helpful 😍
Fabulous! Thank you so much! I can do this! ❤️❤️
Yes you can.... Sharp tools here we come 🙂
Everyday is a learning day. Always wondered how to sharpen your secateurs and the different types. Well explained 😁
Oh excellent... awesome it was useful 👍
My fiskars pruning shears were in bad shape as I abused them over the years. I was thinking of replacing them but I found disassembling allowed me to use a full size stone to fix both the flat side and get a nice edge back on. Only took a few minutes to take apart. I like this video to keep a maintenance edge on them as I go.
Hurrah for not having to buy new tools 😍😍😀
Thanks for the disassemble tip. I don't want to run to the store just yet.
Thank you for a great tutorial!!!
Glad it’s helpful Oscar
Thank you! That was helpful. I am from the US and did have a bit of a hard time understanding you until I used closed caption. Greatly helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
SO easy this was great!!
Yay!!!! Sharp tools from now on
That was so clear and well-explained, thank you so much!😍😍 I've subscribed!
That's brilliant that you found it useful. Welcome to our wee community 😀
Hi Eli and Kate, 👍👍👍 it's as simple as that, very well explained thank you, Take care and stay safe.
:) simples :)
Brilliant tutorial really well explained and demonstrated
Hoping it’ll be a game changer for you Christine
I’ve bought mine and my husband has sharpened all the kitchen knives as well. Love your wee videos 🌺
Oh that’s fab that you got your kitchen knives done too 😍
Loved your presentation. Your smile and happy attitude. The informational knowledge was great! Would like to see more with other types of garden tools, are, shovel, hoe...
Thanks!
Brilliant thank you ! I'm getting one of these
No more blunt tools
Argh … should have watched this before cutting back the overhanging branches and vines yesterday. I “knew” this, but needed a reminder. Thanks from the US
Glad it was helpful 😍
Thank you! You did a great job for me! You are sooo cute, too!!! I'm going to watch all of your videos!❤
Glad it was helpful 😂😂😂😂
Fantastic! Order a Sharpal a few weeks ago and it's been amazing so far
Great to hear!
I have one of those tools but never really knew how to use it. Now thanks to you, I do. Thanks
👍👍👍👍
Thank you. I send off my favourite Felco secateurs to be fully serviced and overhauled (wonderful servicefrom Parkers!) but I'm lazy about the other stuff. No longer - I shall follow your good example. Took me a while to source the Sharpal without resorting to Amazon - but I have now found and ordered one!
Our pleasure!
Good video...
Thank you you literally stop me from ditching my prunes
Thanks lifesaver
Woohoooo good luck
Fabulous little informative video, sharp is safe, stay safe and well guys. 😀
Indeed it is Brian :)
*Thank you*! Fabulously informative and engaging video. I can't quite believe I didn't 'get it' until now 🤪 Just got all my rather cruelly discarded secateurs out of the shed and gonna show them some love - and a lot more patience! - with a good clean and sharpen. New gardening me incoming 😂
Wooohoooo that’s what I want to hear. Go spread the love!
Precise information and loved the accent. 😀👍
Hope it helps you keep on top of things
I’ll be ordering a new sharpening tool like this real soon. I just placed it in my online shopping cart.🤣 The one I have I think has seen better days. Thank you for sharing this info.😊
No probs. The whole point of the channel is to try to help share anything knowledge that might be useful :) that way we all grow :)
@@eliandkate I just spread the mosquito bits inside. I don’t know why I never thought about using it inside.🤦🏽♀️ Thanks again.😊
Thank you, I have been struggling with pruning roses with blunt secateurs and loppers, time for me to get a sharpener. I was going to buy new ones ...now I can save some money and maybe buy some more plants for the garden ! :)
Ha ha ha most excellent plan
Thanks for sharing. I think a pocket sharpener is great.
It really is!
Thank you so much for sharing this video with us. I now feel confident to have a go at sharpening my own tools. I am going to order the Sharpal using your link.
Go for it!
I have loved hearing from you guys saying you are going to go sharpen your own tools now. That is the best response ever to a video, it absolutely warms my heart :)
@@eliandkate I have now had time to use this tool I now have very sharp knives it was so easy to use thanks to your helpful video! Thank you
Oh that's great news!
Another great video. I am so bad at caring for my tools. It’s in my list to do better with.
:) aspirations Baron. Lists are good :)
I’ve been doing this wrong for years. The shed is full of “another new pair of secateurs”. THANK YOU 👏👏👏👏👏
Fingers cross this helps save you pennies Lynette 😍
Great information Eli. I've just bought the Sharpal using your link, along with a Crean Mate :-)
Oh thanks Tim. Now I'll be keen to hear about the Crean Mate. Looks interesting.
Not sure if you are/were a student at U of E but you should be a professor...well done...thank you for your time and expertise, Cannuck.
Awwwww thank you John 😁
Was a student and these days I’m staff 😂😂😂😂
I thumbs up as soon as you said “how sucky is it” never watched before and like you already!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 in my head I'm saying, don't swear don't swear
VERY-GOOD EXPLANATION :)
THANK YOU FOR SHARING :)
I DID A THUMB-UP ABOUT THE VIDEO AND SUBSCRIBED TO THE CHANNEL :)
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
Glad you found the video useful 😁😁😁😁
Thanks, finally understood how to do it 😊
yay :D
Just ordered two of those tools, one for me and one for my best friend.
She will have to learn it, too!
Awwwww that was a thoughtful gift
Thanks Eli! I'm terrible for not maintaining things properly, was never quite sure how to sharpen tools, no excuses now!
You do know I will be checking on you Lorraine? :P
@@eliandkate ha ha, I should have kept quiet!
I didn't have any of those things, so I just scraped amethyst against it. Took a second, but it worked. So thank you!
Ordered one, will let you know how i get on. Thanks for the video!
Good luck 🤞
Very good video. Thank you.
Awww thanks. Glad it was useful 👍
@@eliandkate This is something I’ve ignored for years. I’m going to have a busy afternoon, now I have some motivation and slight know how!! 😄
You won't regret it. The joy of sharp secateurs 😀😀😀
@@eliandkate 🤪😃😃😃😃
Thanks for teaching me what my horticulture teacher never taught me when I asked.
No, really?
I thought looking after your tools would be one of the early lessons
@@eliandkate Absolutely! He actually told me to ask another student to show me!
Thank you for the non-fuss demo of what I need to do. It is a rainy coolish day here in Brisbane so catch up things is the order for the day and sharpening garden tools is on the list. Where would I be able to get one of the small hand held stones and are they available in Oz or can they be sent? Would be so handy. Thanks again for the great tips.
Sounds like a good plan for a rainy day. Get all of those types of jobs done 😀😀😀
I put a link in the video description to a page with the details of all the bits and pieces I use. I got mine on amazon so I'm sure you'll be able to get something there.
Hahahaha you a hilarious 😍 but this was such a fantastic video simplifying everything!
Glad it might be of use :)
No excuse for blunt tools now
Great video, I always love them. You always explain really clearly how to do things. Can I ask, what do you oil your tools with?
Keep the videos coming. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland ☘☘🙂🙂
Thank you Tina. Oil wise, just whatever we have at the time. We are both cyclists so we usually have oil for our bikes and that tends to get used for most things. 😀
I'm not particular to one brand or another.
@@eliandkate Excellent....thank you again. Keep those videos coming...love them ☘🙂
😀😀😀
Another step on my learning curve, thanks! :D I've invested in that Sharpal! True confessions, I went a bit spendy back in the spring and invested in some good Japanese secateurs. Unfortunately, after a couple of months I was horrified to see they'd gone a bit rusty. The internet suggested vinegar to get rid of it. I only had apple cider vinegar. It did take the rust off, but also turned the blades and the join in the middle (also submerged in the glass of ACV) black, when previously it had been shiny stainless steel.... I'm not sure that it actually damaged the blades, but the colour change was a bit of a shock and I have resolved to do better and am apologising to my secateurs by buying them a nice sharpener.
Antonia this made us smile and Kate just got all sympathetic that you are buying a treat for your secateurs.
Yes... the vinegar can turn steel black but dont worry that scrubs off :)
I'm jealous of your japanese secateurs.....
@@eliandkate Thank you, my secateurs and I appreciate the sympathy! Ooh, I wondered if it could be scrubbed off. I have some steel wool that might work.... Yeah, the secateurs were the Gardener's World pick ones by Okatsune. *sigh* Will try to sort them out!!
I have to admit that I had
to watch the video twice- the first viewing was listening to your accent for the entirety of the video. Then I had to watch it the second time to learn how to sharpen pruners without cutting my fingers off 🤣
😂😂😂😂 you be careful
Brilliantly explained and I'm off to sharpen things! I am obsessive about sharpening my knives and axes but for some reason have never even considered the garden tools. Though it's probably because i'm not really much of a gardener- we tend to mainly cut stuff back when it gets really overgrown rather than actually enjoy the whole process....
Glad you found it useful and you never know, it might spur you on to a little more gardening when the nicer weather comes
@@eliandkate Maybe, but we have mostly shade and are on heavy clay- some things like this and we grow them, but many plants give up. We have a lovely fern area- I love ferns. And one sunny spot has a herb bed, the other some flowers. The shady aspect comes into its own in a heatwave with hammocks...
Your correct a blunt tool is dangerous ... a worse cut from a dull edge!! Meant to say other than me you are the only peep I have come across that has a HoriHori which is a fantastic tool. Happy days
I think we are trend setters Jim
Super useful video Eli - I'm so guilty of not keeping my tools in good nick. Do you know how long that little tool lasts? Does it have a replaceable head?
Hey JB. I think sometimes we are all guilty of forgetting to take care of things :)
I’ve had a couple of those styles of sharpening tools and they’re about 3 years old now. Not about replacing bits on them to be honest as it’s not something I’ve ever thought about :)
just come across your channel ,was trying to find out how to sharpen a rusty old dutch hoe that someone gave me , no idea which side to sharpen it ,managed to get some rust off it though maybe its beyond help i dont know , just subbed to you and looking forward to catching up on your videos .
Awesome to have you…
With a hoe you sharpen the outside edge… only one edge 😍
Thanks for the vid. Do you sharpen things like spades with it too?
I don't personally because I dont have any of those types of spades but you, you can use this technique to sharpen spades, hoes, hedging shears etc.
I especially like to make sure my home is sharp for chopping at the weeds. It makes life so much easier.
And thank you so much for the coffee :)
I got a notification this morning. Now have to think of how best to put that towards a video.... (cue evil super villain type scheming laugh)
Well done. What about when you have divots along the end? How do you get those out?
You’d have to regrind the blade, that’s a whole different thing
I have watched other videos about sharpening garden tools, never really felt I got a whole story. However your video is totally fab, everything explained. It seems like a simple process, however I was going to use a file. Lucky I didn't.
A file would do the job, just would give you a much rougher finish
Hi there.. Thanks for this information. Can I ask what sis you clean all that black stuff off with at the beginning? Was it wire wool? Xxx
Yup wire wool or brillopad 😀
@@eliandkate thank u x
where did you get your sharpener thing. What's is called etc. Thank you
If you nip into the video description there a link to the page I out all my garden tools etc on. You'll be able to get all the details there. 😀
this is nice IF I just knew the name of the tool.....did I miss that part?
You must have done
Check the video description for the link😁
Hi I know you said the tool name is in video description, kind of new to this, so can you please tell me where is the video description located. Thanks
Hey Kim it’s under the video on the computer and mobile so you click to open it.
Not sure how it works with tvs
Where can i buy the sharpening tool? Can’t see a link
Hey Jack
If you check the description you'll find a link to our favourite tools and gear. Any of the bits and bobs we talk about and in my wee kit store there.
Or have a search online ... I got mine on Amazon
6:05 Australia! So I never know where to find the “description below” when details/products are linked???
I suppose it will depend on your device but wherever the video description is on the device you are using.
Or just do a search on Amazon.
Click on “more”, below the description/name of video.
What sharpening tool do you use to sharpen the loppers?
same tool, I use that for everything
I’m going to sharpen my tools now, you made it so simple and easy, can I ask why you’ve got bubble wrap on the inside of your greenhouse?
Awesome Chris…. Glad the video helped.
The bubble wrap was because this video was filmed a couple of winters ago and the bubble wrap helps to keep the greenhouse a tiny bit warmer, like a layer of insulation. 😃
Twice in the last week I’ve heard why secateurs are called by pass pruners. Now I’ll remember! 😂😂
Hurrah!!!
Good video, also learn a few new English words! I got to buy me one of those nifty little sharping tools. Thanks
now I'm intrigued as to which new English words you have learned?
My anvil does not have a groove in it Its flat will that dull the blade edge on every cut?
Not sure if you mean an anvil or a sharpening tool
If it’s a sharpening tool then no. It doesn’t need an angle because it’s you who holds the tool at an angle to the blade. It will only dull it if you run the flat edge against the blade edge.
@@eliandkate It's an anvil pruner Should I 'dish out' a groove in the anvil ?
ah ok I get you now.
You mean your anvil pruners aren't the same as mine :D
Sorry!
I wouldn't worry, if that's how they were designed then they are meant to be like that.
See how you get on....
What exactly did you use to clean them? 💜
Soapy water and steel wool, nothing fancy
@@eliandkate no there was some kind of tool?
Not for cleaning no
The tool was for sharpening
It’s the one linked in the description
What if I’ve ruined the beveled edge ? I need to get it back again and how do I do that?
If you’ve badly ruined it then you’d need to regrind it to get it back
@@eliandkate ok thank you. I guess I need to get the done professionally
@@Ozmulki if you have a grinding stone you can do it yourself but otherwise yeah, can can get the edge out back on them.
I’m no good at all that .
Who’s an excellent teacher then ?

What is the name of the tool please
It’s linked in the video description debra
