sounds smoother/warmer to me which I like , not as punchy/harsh as the others. It could be that the music style of that particular piece is more complementary to its tone and better served by that mellower sound
There is a clear difference between the $20 one and the other (or maybe is just those rusty-ass strings) but I don't think the $5000 sounds better than the $620, just different
Yep, the Davie Signature has the same pickup style and position as a Musicman Stingray, a bass renowned for it's very unique voice and extremely full tone. That $5000 bass just sounds like a more hollow version of a Jazz Bass.
MaxTheKanuck Completely agree. I have a StingRay Sub and I adore it. It has that clear bite to it that Davie's signature bass has. The $5000 bass just sounds too bland. Good, but bland.
임채현 That's like saying that a 150€ guitar is no longer a 150€ guitar just because you put new strings, which you should do before a recording session. The set of strings is not part of the instrument. You're going to have to change them sometime if you don't want your bass sound to be completely dead.
Nick, he's actually right. If the goal is to play a bass you bought for 20 dollars, then adding ANYTHING to it makes it cost more than 20 dollars, which ruins your goal. I understand what you're saying but for the purposes of a video that requires a budget, then you don't get to use the same rules as you would in a recording studio.
Amazing playing. So so tasteful. My favourite is the $5000 bass. It was the cut and the warmth. Looks great too. But I feel in a studio environment they’d all have a use. I actually like that $20 bass. It sounds good. Quite 70s.
No self respecting studio would keep that $20 bass. it's much better to have a bigger sound with all the harmonics and frequency content that you can then cutoff than trying to add something that isn't there.
Honestly, you don't build guitars (I do) you would know that it is a combination of wood and electronics. So that $20 guitar can sound like a $ 650 with the right pickups. No piece of wood is worth more than a few hundred dollars, but if someone slapped a hefty price tag on it, you immediately think it sounds like heaven... nuts, pure nuts I say. Sure the $20 bass won't be setup the same but if you suck on a $20 guitar, you'll suck even more on a $10,000 one. Ok
For 20$ it has incredibly decent sound... Sure the 5k one ofc has professional and crystal clear sound, but for a begginer with 20$ he can get things done! If you play the violin you need at least 350 to get a decent sound.
@Digity thing is that some people doing this on strings for purpose. bass sounds more fat then. but for comparison it's just misunderstanding. you have cheap bass with old strings that is always 'muddy' and more expensive basses with fresh strings, where pops are more 'poppy'. another thing with rusty strings, not old or oiled ones, are problems with tuning.
I think all of them sound good and each can serve a unique purpose. The cheaper one definitely sounds flatter but sometimes thats what you want from a bass. Sometimes you want the bright sound that only a more expensive bass can get.
ItzBacon Nah, it completely depends on the genre you're playing. A bass with a flatter sound usually fits better in a EDM/House song, where a bass with a more ringing and rich timbre would sound out of place and not fit the other sounds at all.
Great comparison and you did fantastically well to get a bass for $20! I actually liked the sound of it and would love to hear it after being cleaned up (the strings) or perhaps new strings ... Keep up the great work Davie!!
Personally, the type of music I play and listen too sound like the $20 bass, so I find that sound most appealing, however its obvious the other two have far superior sound in terms of range and clarity. But the muddy tone you get on a shitty used bass speaks more too me.

His signature sounded the best. $5000 is just too ridiculous to pay for an instrument when you can get a signature one with your specs on it that sounds even better.
I'd say the 6mm of rock hard calluses on the fingers of each of his hands protected him. :) But, seriously, Davie504, no more rusty strings of unknown origin, okay? The only chances you should take with those hands are musical ones. ;)
UGSDIT well some people prefer p bass pickups and some people prefer j bass pickups it's all subjective but changing the strings would make it sound way better

Well that's one that would be a little different mic'd up and recorded vs hearing them live and in person. That said, with bass you can pretty much skip the amp altogether and plug in directly with naught but a cheap pre-amp. The sound will vary by different recording methods and equipment of course, but just for the purposes of making a video an expensive amp is pretty unneccessary.
If you really want to test a cheap amp vs an expensive one it would be much more effective to go to your local music shop and try it yourself. Doing it in a video is not really going to come out the way you think.
The $620 would be a really damn good starter. I have two years of guitar so some skills would transfer over. I want to also pick up bass as I want to play some bass riffs as well. I might consider your signature now.
It did give it a bit of an advantage over the over zingy fresh strings, didn't it. The new strung basses can't compete with those fulsome, retro tones.

@@cookiesw9270 how?
That's the problem with really expensive things. It's like the quality vs price curve is exponential and you have to spend a whole lot more money to get a modest quality leap on the top-notch side. It's the same with everything as far as I know
@@r_wallace2356 the strings were well worn and broken in on the $20 bass newer strings have a tinny quality that doesn't sound good to some myself included. Now if you're talking electronics on board both pricier basses blow the el cheapo out of the water but I really liked that murky sound it gave more than the cleaner sound of the pricier basses
Very impresive but can you play saxophone?
Carrotship Music hey dude I saw you in other video, you're a beast bro😂
Alellandro Llandrägger just trying to make him see
He can slap saxophone
Well which sax? Alto, tenor, or bari? Maybe even soprano or bass
Your signature has such a great pop and tone to it.
The $20 bASS just needs new strings.
strings are expensive though
Raining BASS - Slayer
BlackArmy TR if that were true everybody would be dead
Only Davie504 makes a $20 bass sound like a $1000 bass!
the part and montage at 0:29 is hands down the best thing I've seen this year. Period.
Bet the $20 Roytek would sound pretty good with some brand new strings.
Very impressive but can you play RHCP aeroplane in an aeroplane
....The budget involved....
With an aeroplane*
+Shady2406 I like your idea much better!
I prefer the $20 bass, cheap and sounds good.
The $5000 bass is highway robbery with that price
Love this video. Just shows it’s not the instrument it’s the person playing it they all rocked
The 20 dollar bass has the best sound if you play jazz because it is very smooth
very impressive but can you play slipknot with a slip knot?
Fuck slipknot!
0:43 in love with that... Lol
Good thing you have bass back
