  • Caroline Matilda of Hanover was born on 22 July 1751 at Leicester House, London and died on 10 May 1775 in Celle. She was an English princess and Queen of Denmark and Norway from 1766 to 1772 as wife of King Christian VII. In early 1772 she was divorced due to her affair with the personal physician Johann Friedrich Struensee and banished to Celle, where she lived separated from her children until her early death.

I was wondering where to enroll. Since you brought it up here, here I will state for the record that my favorite royal is Louis XVI. My reasons are as follows:
      1) He literally (if not purposely) sacrificed the French monarchy for the sake of aiding my country in winning its independence from Britian. For the Battles of the Chesapeake and Yorktown, I salute you.
      2) Famous last words: "Je meurs innocent de tous les crimes qu'on m'impute. Je pardonne aux auteurs de ma mort. Je prie Dieu que le sang que vous allez répandre ne retombe jamais sur la France."
      3) He was married to everybody else's favorite royal.
      4) He was "le Roi martyr" (th-cam.com/video/1h7s8SDNQKE/w-d-xo.html).
      Joyeux anniversaire et beaucoup plus.

Heartwarming fact: Both Caroline’s children were very close no matter this affair. Her son Frederick started to hate Queen Maria Julianna when she wanted to separate him from Louisa. She was his best friend.

I always loved Caroline Matilda's story (especially after watching the 2012 drama 'A Royal Affair').
While listening to your video I couldn't put my finger on why her story reminds me so much of Sophia Dorothea of Celle's tragic life, and then at the end of the video you mentioned they were related (Sophia was Caroline's great-grandmother).
Both of them had husbands who mistreated them, both had their lovers killed/executed and both were exiled from their reigning domains being forced to live far away from their children for the rest of their lives

My goodness, so much life in 24 years! It's sadly the universal historical double standard for kings and queens: that kings could bed anyone they pleased, but queens were humiliated and disgraced if they engaged in similar behavior. Even understanding why (queens were the ones carrying the heirs after all) it is most distasteful.

It’s sad how these kings can hook up with whoever they want but a queen or princess will get punished if they have a lover. Same thing happened to Katherine Howard when King Henry VIII had her executed for taking a lover.

Well, in all fairness, she should have been more careful and taken the King (The one who'd just beheaded a wife, ran off others, and had one die) far more seriously. She was only a teenage girl and I understand that young women are naive oftentimes, but dang! Seems like she'd have been a little more aware of his horrible mean streak!

I really hate the double standard. Kings could do whatever they want, sleep around and be as horrible to their wives as they want. But if she dared to find love with someone else she would lose everything. It really stinked. Prince Albert's mother ended up a similar situation.

Looks like I became the movie guy on your channel, but I highly recommend to watch "A royal affair". It's a movie about Caroline, Christian and Struensee (played by Mads Mikkelsen). The moment Caroline in the movie reacts to the news about Struensee's death made me cry like a baby. You gotta watch it in English tho, but I loooooooved that movie.
It's heartbreaking when you think about it. Married to an idiot that humiliates you all day long, then you find true love and just when she's happy for the first time, they start a conspiracy to humiliate her one more time and kill the man she loved with all her heart.
Thanks for that video. Reminded me of 2013, when I was researching it for a museum brochure.

Such bias with royal women of that time. It was considered perfectly normal for kings having mistresses and illegitimate children, but for common men having an affair with royalty meant death penalty and life long imprisonment for royal girls. So sad Carolina Matilda died so young. Thank you for enriching our knowledge.

My favorite royal is Marie De Guise. She was strong and smart, and held Scotland together, keeping it from being absorbed into England. She must’ve really vexed ol’ Henry VIII - a powerful, independent woman he couldn’t control! And the ultimate triumph over him was that it was HER bloodline that came to rule the island, and still endures after 500 years. 👸🏻

The Kings of France oh yes! It was from your video that I learned more about her. Before that, I’d only seen her portrayed as debauched and unhinged in the 1998 movie “Elizabeth,” so I really enjoyed watching your video and getting to know the real story about this amazing lady. I would love to see a movie made about her, especially when she turned down Henry VIII’s marriage proposal, with the quip about having a “little neck.”

@@akaLaBrujaRoja Quite interesting to read your conversations. I was reading about the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, one of his nieces, Christina of Denmark, apparently was being considered to be Henry VIII wife after Jane Seymour. She supposedly said, “If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England’s disposal.” And that was that, Cromwell advised the King to look somewhere!
