I couldn't understood what mentality was the roman/greek people of that time who were insisting to kill and enjoying such act.

It is amazing how fast they turned on their home town hero, isn't it? Kinda like the Yankees v the Mets.
This is my fav part of Barabus! In which Antony psyched the Gladiator biggest of badasses with his spear and in the end, with amazing wit, used it to instantly turn the tables on "Baddest of Glad Asses!". Interesting how the astonished crowd instantly turned on this long time arena hero or "god" of theirs, once he was reduced to a bloody and quite humiliating fall, had thumbed him down COLD! Him, now broken up in devastating defeat, pleading for mercy - now that the "shoe" finnally was on his foot...and. Barabus clearly didn’t want to finish him off, was clearly reluctant to, from, perhaps the transformation of Christianity slowly proceeding within him.
But I guess Antony was like, after much deliberarion over the matter was like
"well, ahhh what the hell! This dude had egotistically killed so many in glee and...all so amusing and fun to him. The DOG! Bout time he "pays the piper"! Had it coming to him, long over due. Anyhow, If I refuse, Rome will mess me up. Moreove, he'll most likely will die anyway, by the pathetic looks of him, from slow agonizing sustained injuries. I watched this scene on TV 30 years ago when I was about 10. I remember it mostly for the charioteer's battle screams and his strikingly grinning, almost skeletal, face.

Filmed in the honest to God ruins of an actual amphitheatre. A beautiful movie throughout. It's not the Colosseum by the way which wasn't built yet.

La película Barrabas. La vi en el año 1964...recuerdo la música me cautivó especialmente ...De igual manera la produccion en general..el segmento mostrado es espectacular en todo su montaje

No compagina, con la obra Literaria y extraordinaria historia contada por su autor, Par Lagerkvist; premio novel de Literatura del año 1.951; de gran sensibilidad humana entre la narrativa bíblica en todo su contexto cierto, y a la vez algo de ficción; pero dotada de una bella inspiración y candor.
La película a pesar de contar con grandes actores de reparto no deja de ser, sino, una escaramuza de sangre entre gladiadores. No parece tener nada que ver con la pequeña gran novela.

Different times....the stars in that movies did not prepare themselves building up their bodies like today - "Barrabas" does not look like he could survive a fight for long, but Anthony Quinn was a great actor - bodywise Jack Palance was really believable.

17 year old Sharon Tate was an extra in this movie, as a colosseum spectator. While her father was stationed at the US military base at Vicenza. She appeared as an extra in a couple of Italian films made during this time.

A good advertisement of the dangers of drinking and driving. Palance had three glasses of wine before the showdown with Quinn. If you drink and drive, you could end up getting stabbed through the throat by your adversary.

I used to dislike Anthony Quinn because he always played cruel rough bad guys, but later I came to appreciate his work and his long career. He was great as Gauguin in Lust for Life; he brought that person to life.
That's how you know he was a good actor. I hated Joaquin Phoenix because of his role in Gladiator, but like yourself, I appreciated his subsequent works
