    From a plastic model builder... advice on using decals.
    smooth gloss finish all places that will get a decal. Get some decal softener. Get the decal as well set as you can and use a corner of paper towel to wick away excess water. Then you lightly hit it with the softener which literally melts it just a bit to get it laid down tight to any curvature or details like panel lines. Let it dry THOROUGHLY. Then clear of the top of it with matte. This will make the transparent edges all but disappear if down well and will take care of wrinkly decals on curved surfaces.

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice! This is pretty close to what I did... hmmm... the decals I was using were like 15 years old, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I'm jealous of your skills, I gott work on those :-)

  • @Echsidor
    @Echsidor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Brent, have you looked at using MicroSol and MicroSet for your transfers? They make it so you don't need to cut away /any/ of the clear parts of the transfer and the transfer adheres to curved surfaces better.

    • @richardkilley6838
      @richardkilley6838 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He uses it already you can see a bottle of one of them in the decal part of the video!

    • @EternalQuestion
      @EternalQuestion 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vallejo decal softener also works great. It helps the decals conform to awkward shapes and removes most of the clear film. Then just give it a coat of matt varnish over the top and it blends in like you've freehanded.
      Just make sure you paint the softener and varnish over the entire panel to avoid any obvious patches.

    • @Echsidor
      @Echsidor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardkilley6838 I didn't catch that. I figured he didn't because he cuts the clear portions of transfers away when you really don't need to using the Micro products.

    @goobertown hobbies, To not have the translucency on the transfers transparent area, use Micro Sol solution. It dissolves the area outside painted parts and soften the plastic making them easier to look good... I gloss coat, then use a transfer settling solution, put the transfer, add sol over the symbols, wait about one hour for the transfer to soften and settle... when they look set, add a second gloss coat (this seals the transfers, and protects them). I did an article in BoLS web site.

      Goobertown Hobbies you’re welcome. Being able to remove it with q-tips (dry or with white spirit) is really a big deal. Leaves you with a very clean job and no worries for dry wash stains. It literally doesn’t matter if you’re a bit sloppy or slip by accident. And since acrylics don’t react with white spirit you don’t even have to worry about your paint job underneath. Just don’t rub too hard (dabbing motion).

    Woah woah woah was that kalk I spy at 9:38 !? Do you have a reef as well!? Would love to see pics or get a vid on it if you do. I’m a huge coral nerd as well

      The reef aquarium was in my past. I used to work at a tropical fish store and be really into aquaria. I still have 1 clownfish who won't die ;-) Right now that turbo calcium is just to rest my hands on while I paint to keep the mini in-frame and in-focus

    I have a question...
    The 30 second walk from my room to the garden (where I spray my minis) seems to be plenty of time for loads of cat/dog hairs to stick to my model! When I spray it, they stick out really easily so its not too much of an issue, but...
    do you have any solutions for unsolicited cat hairs on your models? the worst is when a stray hair gets onto your brush!

    this was a really good video! I must say, I was introduced to this channel by your guide to beginning miniature painting. But, I thought, why don't we go a step further into introductions? what if you made a guide to assembling a model, to avoid nub-marks and make the model solid? P.S: Happy birthday Randy!

      I stay vigilant! :-) If you look carefully there is definitely cat hair in this video though, and it bugs me hehehe

    In your contrast video you said you were going to thicken up ink to be like paint but you didnt show it. How do you do that?

    Hey Brent, what size magnets do you use? I remember you saying in one of your videos but I can't remember which one. Lol

    Hey! I love the magnet idea, what glue do you use? I havent found anything strong enough to bond it to the plastic bases.

    • @marzipan3437
      @marzipan3437 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm betting you've tried supper glue but if you haven't I would suggest it
      Edit hot glue or pva might work pva is stronger than super glue just takes ages to dry and hot glue you can create a secure piece of plastic holding it in

      He has a video on how he makes the magnetic dowels. He uses an epoxy to attach the magnets to both the bases and the dowels.❤️

      I use 2 part epoxy to glue magnets to bases. It definitely holds up longer than superglue.
