In 2021 you can sometimes get the fully specced i7 model of this thing for about $300-$450 in perfect condition -- normal chromebook territory. Great deal at that price point. I got one and love it for couch surfing, chat apps, and word processing. The bezels are a bit big, yeah, but the 4:3 aspect ratio makes up for it. Feels a lot bigger than if it were 12" 16:9.

When they slap the same Chrome OS with a $1200 price tag Google is deluding itself. And its definitely not a benchmark device for manufacturers for the top end of Chromebooks like the Chromebook Pixel 1/2. They have ads for this on American Football.

I am so sick of modern devices making more and more decisions for me. This video nails it. What do I mean? Issues like the keyboard adding extra spaces and "Typing Like This With Everything" ... or not being able to record video. Or removal of legacy keys on the keyboard. As computers have gotten faster, it's as if people in these companies think we no longer need to be able to customize, or make our own decisions anymore. My favorite laptops are from the mid 2000's (if only they were faster). They have USB ports up the yazoo, physical volume slider buttons, easy to press power buttons (some these days you almost need tweezers to press!) laptops these days are so bland and boring. And its literally hard to figure out how to type or even use video anymore. Its so frustrating.

Or for $150 - $200 you could just buy a used unibody MacBook from early 2010 or late 2009 and run the latest versions of macOS, Windows, or Linux. Plus the specs are compatible or sometimes better than a $150 - $250 Chromebook.

That's because you know nothing of Chrome OS's actual potential. It's quite amazing if you actually get to know it's in's and outs. I mean I'm running Chrome OS, Android and Linux natively, than OSX, Windows and BSD over KVM and VirtualBox. I have a LAMP server, Apache, MySQL, PHP. I can run Steam, I have emulators with over 3,000 ROM's as well replica USB game controllers for each of the emulators. I have MS Office, Photoshop, etc. running under Wine. I can connect to my firms Citrix server and stream whatever is on the Windows Server. I can edit movies using Blender and Resolve Davinci, both runing locally. In fact I can't think of a thing that I cannot do on my PixelBook.

I understand your opinion, but I have a different take on this. I think that the Pixelbook is too far ahead of its time.
Right now it looks as if Progressive Web Apps will replace most of the native applications (not all of them or at least not in the near future). When that happens, all you need is a powerful browser and the operating system almost does not matter anymore. In this scenario, you will most definitely notice using a more powerful CPU and lots of RAM.

    • @gordian1024
      @gordian1024 6 ปีที่แล้ว

*@Nyxtroos* With the current input technologies (I am not saying that there will not be any new ones), I think that laptops (not to mention desktop pcs) or usage-wise similar technology (like smartphone docking stations) will not vanish - mostly due to bigger screen sizes and better text input (the differences in processing power are already getting more and more insignificant). However, you are indeed right, that most use cases will work just fine on smartphones or on tablets and that people will prefer these (because they are easier to use, way more portable and fashion statements).
Currently, web technologies are getting a lot more complex but, in the process, gain the ability to adapt to all devices supporting web browsers. An application will be more difficult to build, but developers will only need to create a single version to target all devices (independent of operating system, screen size or other limitations).
What I am trying to say is that the Chromebook or similar devices will support some usage scenarios (although probably not the most popular ones) better and therefore will keep existing.

So....2023 here, and I just picked up the i7 (7th gen) version of this with 16GB RAM and 512GB drive for a princely £229. ChromeOS is vastly improved, and the ability to transparently run a Linux VM makes this a great mobile dev machine running VS Code and . It still has around 8hrs battery life, the screen's still absolutely fantastic, and this thing feels absolutely _solid_ compared with 90% of the laptops out there. Honestly? I have absolutely no complaints other than the irritating keyboard quirks (but it still feels lovely, so I can live with the odd layout).

You can actually create a bios on chrome os, but it is a difficult process. It would be totally worth it to do an update if someone in your office could get that up and running. You'll also need to take the machine apart probably, because there are sometimes screws grounding a bios lock on the chrome books.

  • @jonscapri
    @jonscapri 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with you with Chrome OS not being up to snuff. I was a beta tester for Chrome OS way back when Google was giving out the CR-48 laptops to test it. After the beta test period was over, and I could do what I wanted with the laptop I changed the bios with the bios, and loaded a full bore linux os. Even with the limited onboard storage it was much more usable, and until a couple of years ago was my go to device for what I needed/ wanted to do. It would be nice if Google would just release a full Linux Distro as Chrome OS. Give it the polish that most modern Os's have, and release it to the wild.

Crostini is a thing. Google, with Chrome OS, knows that containers are the future of operating systems. Chrome OS already has this down with the ability to use Android apps (they run in containers) and now with Crostini in Alpha we can use Linux apps, too. The beta version of Crostini will be released soon with even more features including graphics acceleration so you'll be able to install steam among other things. But even in Alpha Crostini turns a Pixelbook into a great developer machine and with the release of a consumer version of Crostini on the horizon, pixelbook will be a viable alternative to windows and mac machines. One day, we might even be able to use Windows and MacOS apps with such technology. Crostini is working on most new, intel based chromebooks.

  • @OlivierMelcher

Do any of you get that not everyone does gaming on a laptop? Not everyone does heavy video editing on a laptop? Not everyone sits at home in front of a built PC all day? Why can't the people who just need a laptop for entertainment, browsing, and documents have a very nice well-built device? Why should I buy a Windows laptop that takes forever to update, is terrible at entertainment with a worthless app store just because it has the ability to do more features that I wouldn't even use to begin with? It'd be like me buying a Pickup truck that gets bad mileage and is slower just because I might need to haul something maybe never, when I could get a sporty car for the same price that does what I need to do VERY WELL but OH NO I'm not going to be able to haul anything with it which I wouldn't even do in the first place?? In other words, why hate on a product that you won't be buying anyways

but macOS is better in every possible way than chrome os. More reliability, more compatibility, nicer looking (IMO). Chromebooks are generally cheap and make sense as a cheap web-browsing device, because they are more reliable and outperform similarly priced windows laptops. But if you're going to spend 1200 on a laptop, ChromeOS is so far behind macOS that it just doesn't make sense.

    • @chzcake44s

Desktop OS market desperately needs some real competition right now (regardless of your OS preference, I think it's fair to say that, for the average user, there isn't a good alternative to Windows, and considering the direction Windows seems to be going in that REALLY needs to change), and Google's the only company I can see pulling that off.

As far as I know none of those get around the barrier of entry problem, and the fact that I've never heard of two of those further complicates the matter of choosing a distro. Admittedly, I completely forget that Wine is a thing, that at least alleviates some of the concerns about lack of software.
Although... if you can run basically any Windows program on a compatibility layer, then nobody has any reason to actually port software to Linux... meaning Wine becomes even more necessary... and then you're ultimately depending on Windows anyway... I don't know, maybe I'm just overthinking it but something about that doesn't seem sustainable to me.

If you remove the write-protect screw, you can install windows on it. You might need 3rd party drivers, but it works pretty well.

I like Linus, but HATE this video. Chrome OS is amazing and it's all about productivity.
I've been using ChromeOS exclusively for a year now for personal and business and it's the best thing to have happened. They are very fast, very reliable, time spent working on IT problems is reduced to practically nothing. Even our telecom system is all ran through ChromeOS (DialPad.com). Our accounting software is cloud based. GoogleScripts let let us easily integrate our webservices with googleSheets and Docs to eliminate duplicated data and auto populate forms in ways that were either not possible before or now only require 1/10 the time to setup than when we used Microsoft office. The need for an IT guy to fiddle with printer drivers and permissions is eliminated with Google Cloud Print services. Everything in the office has changed. Even scanning a document from scanner is better because I put in my pin and it goes straight to my private drive account. Emailing... OMG email... Microsoft exchange was a nightmare compared to Gmail for business.. Syncing files, losing copies, finding documents, having attachments on the PC but not on the phone. Even doing presentations in the boardroom is night and day. Now the projector just has a chromecast and you can use any device, chromebook, phone, watch, w/e. Just hit the cast button, select the meeting room, boom, done, no bringing a usb stick, setting up a PC, adjusting the resolution, syncing the remote, hoping you have the version of the presentation with the latest changes. I could go on and on about how ChromeOS has made work more productive and enjoyable.
Crouton is just a distraction too, you don't need it. If you're a programmer you can put the Pixelbook in Dev mode and load all the tools in the shell without installing linux. GIT, PHP5/7, Python, GCloud SDK, Nano, the CREW package manager has you covered.
From a business and productivity prospective I'd never go back to anything else.
Anyone who says chromeOS isn't the future doesn't know how much it can do or how to take advantage of it.

I have to agree with all this, since migrating to the Chrome OS actual work productivity has increased over iOS and Win10. These TH-cam guys are not the people to review these devices because they don't do anything practical. All they do is make TH-cam videos and highlight which trendy gimmicks are present or missing.
I have a Surface, but it's throttled by a clumsy OS that is poorly outdated for cloud-based computing.

Truth is it depends greatly on your needs windows pretty much has a lockdown on serious gaming, You can game on linux and IOS however, not on the same level, or with the same reliablity that you could if you were on windows theres also a ton of legacy software that you may or may not be interested that will be supported by windows but not IOS or chrome OS
All In all, most people that make the switch from windows are simply disgruntled with microsoft for reason A or B but if you talk to anyone who is in business, or a serious PC gamer almost always youll find that windows is the perferred operating system, Options are great, but theres a reason windows is king when it comes to OS

Just adding my reply to up the count here, because I agree with everything in this thread. ChromeOS rocks! It is way better in real life than the shit fights I had to live with for many years on Windows, OSX, and Linux. This review is so far off track it guarantees I will ignore all their posts in the future, and the brands that have sponsored them; squarespace and tunnelbear.

It can actually, and it also runs PIXLR EDITOR offline which does more than I need. It's obviously not a one machine fits all, but it's WAAAYYY better than he's making it out to be and that's my beef. I get that Linus is a windows fanboy but this video is worse than when Top Gear trashed the Tesla roadster for being an electric car. Again, ChromeOS has been my daily driver for a couple years and my business is all chromeOS and it's insanely more productive. Waiting for a computer turn on makes my blood boil now because I'm used to getting things done in a couple seconds and working the first time. This dual booting thing is just silly too, you can put it in Developer mode and install packages with chromebrew so I can write code. push it with GIT and deploy it with gCloud right from my chrome desktop.

I've been pretty happy with my PixelBook, but it definitely could have used a fingerprint sensor...
Pairing with Bluetooth devices is a bit finicky, when it works at all... I have a non-pixel phone, so tethering doesn't work.
On the plus side, I got a cool dock, and the PixelBook works with charging through it, with the the USB Audio, the USB ports, as well as VGA and HDMI out.

Chromeos is quite amazing and quicker in many ways after you get used to it. There is a lot of thing Linus complained about that really become non complaints. If I could dual run chromeos and windows on my desktop, I would

ChromeOS is fine on some 150-200 USD school machine. It just isn't an OS for something that the Pixelbook tries to be.
