Thanks! Feels good to be working on the rink again. Last year I tore my ACL playing adult city league hockey and had to take a year off, but this year we are back in full force! --- I will be doing an overall video that comes out in February of the build from start to finish. Awesome! Great to have you back again John! Will be doing a few more detailed videos before the end of the year of the setup process. And will do a full video like normal in February. Cheers!
I found a building build video of yours earlier this year, then stumbled upon the ice rink videos. Started with year one, worked my way through, then realized there was no video for this past year. Seen the news about things for last year and have been waiting so long to see this years build. Can’t wait to see the improvements to this years setup!
One of the most anticipated videos of the year for me. Or as it happens this year - series of videos :D Amazing stuff, looking forward to the full rink video! Thanks and cheers from Poland :)
Thanks so much for tuning in again! We are looking forward to the cold temps so the ice can go in and can't wait to do the full video early next year! Cheers and hope all is well over in Poland!
Thanks for tuning in! Will actually have 2 more videos and then the long main video in February as usual. We are still needing temps to cool down here so we can pour and get some ice!
Great to see you at it again Pete, was re-watching the old videos of the rink the other day and got to thinking, shouldn't this years videos be uploaded soon and here you are, right on cue =) I hope you and everybody get to enjoy the rink this winter and wish you the best of luck with the snow (hopefully as little as possible). My own ambitions are on pause for one more year due to the fact that the pond 30 yards from my house wasn't drained this year and free ice is free ice so the old 2"x4" lumber rink is out there and will have to do this year as well but I would love to get some of the neighbors together and build something even close this awesome thing you've got going! Have a great season with lots of laughs, good times, plenty of hockey and share more videos, we love them!
Hey Dan! That would be great for you to get back at it with some help from the neighbors and friends! Thanks for the kind words and for following along! Have a great Christmas and New Years. Cheers from Montana!

Hey RJ! Great to hear from ya man. It’s definitely a labor of love, but we really do put it to good use with everyone. Are you doing an ODR this winter or going to skate on one?! Thanks for taking the time to say hi and for following along with the project. Will definitely keep ya in the loop. Going to do a couple smaller videos for the LED lights and netting and then a full video in February. Take care and have a good day!

Will be interested to see how the Tallboys hold up. I don' t think you could get them much more secure but they do look like they could catch a fair bit of wind. Hopefully it will be a non-issue for you. Looking forward to the next update.
Hey Jeff! I had the tallboys for the rink I did 2 years ago, it was the first set shipped out ( I transitioned to the 18 inch boards on each long side after the corners . - but they held up great and I only had a couple stakes in them. ( they went up just a couple days before i filled the rink. This year I staked the heck out of them just since I put them up in october and didn't want them to go flying. I will say they held up in a 63 mph gust we had in November. Cheers!
Oh yes! I was thinking this was the first trial run for the tall boys. Should be all set if they can stand up to some + 60 mph gusts. I have a 28 x 56 NiceRink setup I was able to buy used a few years ago. Worth the work once you see the kids out skating on it.
Hey Jeff! That is awesome you have a 28x56 setup! Yep, I agree. A labor of love but worth it once the kids are out there! -- I would say the only time i'm worried about the boards is before the water goes in. Once the water goes in and covers the feet and freezes against the boards it is rock solid. It's just if you put them up super early like we did that I worry about the high winds blowing them. which happened once when I didn't do every stake! But I also think we have a lot higher winds than most folks will see, especially for those who live in town with homes and fences protecting them. Cheers and I hope the weather gets cold so you can get the rink up soon!!
Thanks! This video shows in detail the board setup! Too warm to pour the rink right now but hoping to pour in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, will be doing a video of the netting and under ice LED lighting, followed by the full start to finish video in February! Cheers
Very legit backyard rink! Have you ever considered lining the perimeter of the rink with pavers so you don't have to do the layout each year? Also if you feel like saving your arm pounding rebar, get yourself a SDS plus ground rod driver!
Thanks! So I just ordered an SDS plus ground rod driver when I saw your comment a couple days ago and should be in later this week. GENIUS idea! Thanks so much, I can't wait to try it on my Dewalt rotary hammer demo tool! that will save my arms and wrists next year. THANK YOU! -- haven't thought of pavers, would they go outside the rink? I keep the corner stakes in and just do a quick stringline and paint which is easy, but always love to hear ideas!
@@DIYPETE you could do paver’s 10’ from each corner just to keep you square or you could do pavers around the whole parameter so setting up boards is a ease…
Wondering if your season has been as mild as other places. With no deepfreeze in the forecast for the foreseeable future I haven't even put my boards down this year as of yet.

Great video Pete! I know you said a video is coming for how you did your netting, but those of us who need to put up netting asap (this weekend!) are curious if you can quickly describe it? What kind of stakes are those that you used and how tall? How did you attach the netting? What kind of netting and where did you get it from? Thanks Pete!
Hey! Thanks, you are in luck. I have a video that will go up within the next 48 hours on how we do the stakes ( maybe sooner ). Anyhow, I use 10 foot t posts and attach the netting to it with zip ties. Pound posts in with a post hole pounder ( can get at a hardware store ). If you want to pro up the look of the t posts you can use black foam pipe insulation. Pretty simple, cost efficient, and effective! Check back though in the next few days to see the video. Cheers!

Hey! Great question. This was a concern of mine as well. I flagged the lines so I know exactly where they are in case we get snow, and adjusted the skids below the auger so it stays a couple inches off the ground. The LED lights are pulled tighter and have plenty of yard staples this year. So I feel pretty good about it and may even use a shovel to be safe around those areas if the need arises. But last year we put them in when it was really cold and it was hard to get the staples in and the LED coils were so cold it was tough to get them to lay flat. So I do think this will work out better this year and if I were to accidentally cut one I have patch kits. But I will share how it goes in the final video of the rink for sure! Great question and I will know by trial and error this year haha :) Cheers
Hey Josh! I like the tall boys. Especially on the ends to keep the puck in when shooting. A net obviously works too, but the boards are definitely nice for that. This is the first year doing the side with tall boys all the way on the one side. So that will be interesting to see what we think of clearing the snow that's made from skating since we will have to shovel it up and over the 4 foot boards instead of an easy toss over the 18 inch boards. Will also be interesting to see how the drifts pile in since we are out in the open and get lots of wind. I will report back after using them this season, but did really like using them on the corners / ends for the last time we did the rink!

I love your rink and your videos but when I look at your lawn and that particular area it doesn’t seem very usable for much in the summer, so why don’t you just leave up a permanent board solution and make 4+ days of your life per year that much easier?
Thanks! We just use it in the summer to throw a football around and baseball. We've tried planting grass and it comes in a little thicker each year, but is still very sparse with lots of weeds and thus doesn't make the best field to play around in. But it is lit and it works! It takes about 5 hours to set up the board portion of the project with a couple helpers so isn't too bad. The lights stay up year round. Trimming / mowing around it would be a descent amount of work but probably not too terrible. The boards have done well in the wind, but I'd love to use a U style stake or rebar with a knob on the end to better lock down the board as really high winds can pull it up a bit ( I'm talking 60+ miles per hour ). since the angled rebar isn't 100% efficient in locking it down. How do you install the liner with the tall sides. Also How do you install kick plates with the tall sides.
Does it need to be perfectly level or can the water/ice take care of some of the leveling? (How important is leveling?)
