Hey Pete. You have to be one awesome dad and neighbor. Congratulations for all your hard work. My only experience with outdoor rinks was playing on them back in Winnipeg. My wheelhouse was working on indoor rinks. I believe I could help you simplify your ice maintenance while giving you more consistent conditions if your interested. Either way, looks like your having a blast and that's what its all about. All the best.
You are the best! Thanks for following along every year even though aren’t that into hockey. It is a fun sport to watch and play if you ever decide to give it a try :) cheers and thanks again!
I don’t play hockey but do live in an area that gets 400+ inches of snow a year so I do other ice/snow sports like skiing but these vids never disappoint.
These yearly hockey rink videos are a reminder to me how fast time flies by! Feels like it was yesterday when I was watching your first DIY hockey rink video!
Thanks for following along over the years! Doesn't seem like we were excavating for the rink long ago either! Time definitely flies too fast! Hope all is well!
LOL, when you made the comment about not going out there too much when it's -10 to -30 it brought back memories from my childhood. We played no matter how cold it was. I had to walk 5 blocks to the rink at 3:30AM for practice in that weather. Yep, lugging my bag with all my gear plus a couple of sticks. Ice time was at such a premium you took whatever you could get. When I first started, our rink (park district) had no roof. Then they added a massive roof, but no sides to the building due to lack of funding. That made the rink like a wind tunnel a lot of the time. Years later, they add 3/4 height walls with open boarded slats at the top, again due to lack of funding. I grew up in the epi-center of youth hockey in the midwest. The rink was my hangout all winter long from day one until closing day. The Blackhawks practiced at our rink back then whenever Chicago Stadium was booked with Ice Capades or the circus. I skated with them often when I was in high school. Also watched Bobby Hull's two son's play from way back when they started out as Mites. I knew all the Hawks and they knew me. I was the Rink Rat King in my age group. I got to run the Zamboni whenever the operator was out sick too. Man that was the golden age for me. This outdoor rink you built here is the ultimate. We had a rink in the back yard, but nothing fancy. The ice was rough and we were spoiled so we only used it as a last resort. I notice these days, no one freezes their yards any longer. No rinks other than these ginormous indoor palaces. That's kinda sad. This is just amazing.
The yearly rink video is my favorite one on your channel... We have a big backyard (not Utah big, but big enough) and I'm now working on getting the wife on board with making one of the Nice Rinks in our backyard for our 3 boys. Looks like an insane amount of work, but it also looks methodical and therapeutic like cutting the grass.
Hey Josh! Thanks man, I appreciate it! That's awesome you are getting the wife on board. -- Honestly, I think it is such great thing to do to create memories for the family and kids that they'll never forget. I still have a ton of memories skating on the rink my Dad built us 3 boys. ( I am the middle of 3 ). - And now we are doing the same for our family. Your 3 boys will love it, get out a lot of energy, and I'm sure sleep better haha. Plus you can always tell what kids have a rink as their skills increase exponentially. All things your wife will be excited about. It is a lot of work, although if you don't have as much wind and snow as we do up in the foothills, things will be a little better. All sizes of rinks are great -- I have quite a few friends with rinks around 25x40 / 30x50 etc and they get lots of use. -- Resurfacing late at night is very therapeutic. -- If I can help in convincing any more just let me know. As long as the weather cooperates so you get a good season, it is totally worth it. Cheers
Where I grew up, we had 4 outdoor rinks. Elementary school, college & recreational area. All within an 8 block radius. The college had 2. One for hockey & skating & the other strictly for broomball use, no skates. Thanks for the memories.
Hey Luke! That is awesome. Congrats on the new home build. And that 6 acres will be a blast to customize, and to put that rink on! Looking forward to seeing that rink and you'll have to email a photo of it next year. I'd love to see it! Holler if you run into any questions I may be able to help out with. Cheers!
The setup and maintanence is something a lot of people wouldn't reaize how hard that really is physically. In the cold too add that onto clearing the snow on your driveway and doorstep. Fun to watch, you are a hard worker.
I love seeing how beautiful you made this, and all the fun you can have with an ice rink in your own yard! We made a rink in our front yard each winter in Michigan. Played lots of rough hockey games there! My dad would first pack the snow in a large approx 40 X 90' area with the family station wagon. Then, my brother and I would flood the rink, each night adding another layer. It was bumpy at first, but would be smooth after about two weeks. We used natural snowbanks for the perimeter walls. I'd love to share a picture from 1978, but you'll have to use your imagination.
I love this video. My dad always built me a rink in our backyard plus the one at my school. I learned to skate while he flooded the rink and fixed the ice. Those are some of my happiest memories as a kid.
Thought I'd been waiting all year, but my suspicions were correct, and it was 2 years! Sorry about the injury, but glad to see you were back this year. I'm a basketball player, and don't even really know anything about hockey, but definitely appreciate and look forward to your video each year. Nice job, Pete.
I said to you before that this is the coolest rinkbuild ever, all who uses this rink should raise a staty over you. Amazing work you and everyone else put in. Thumbs up from Sweden 🙂
This is always my favorite time of year is seeing the updates to the rink. Cheers for a good season! I wish the best for future seasons and cant wait to see how much it grows and changes!
Hey John, thanks man! It was a good season, and another fun ODR to hang out at. Hope you got in some hockey this winter and thanks for taking the time to check out the video and leave some feedback. I appreciate it! Cheers and have a great week!
I always enjoy the rink videos - besides the technical aspects - I love to see how much fun you have doing it. However, I think the best part is watching the real sense of community that seems to be a big part of the experience.
I look forward to this video every year! I think it’s cool to see how every year you get something new to help with the rink. I thought the attachment you got for your hammer drill was awesome, seems like it’s more convenient than hammering in each stake. Can’t wait for next years video! Cheers from Pennsylvania!
Thanks for watching Sean! Yeah the ground driver attachment was definitely a good add on :) Hope all is well out in Pennsylvania and that you got in some skating this winter. Cheers!
Thanks Pete! This video gave me peace of mind as I take on my first rink. I was mid-fill when we got a big storm. Hoping the snow will melt in as I top up the rink 🤞🤞🤞
Hey Matt!! How did it turn out?! Yeah darn weather never makes it easy. I’ve found that it can always be fixed though with some work :) what state are you doing yours in? Hopefully you are having some cold temps and skating by now! We are filling as we speak! Cheers
I put up an ODR every year, this year was by far one of the worst because of the warm weather and then the snow right after, still had fun. I have the EZ ice system which is nice because no stakes which is perfect as my rink sits on both grass and asphalt. Love the Videos, they give me inspo to put my rink up every year.
Hey man! I hear you about all the warm and then cold weather. Such a crazy season. We luck out since our elevations is a mile high, but still had the darn fluctuations. I've heard great things about the EZ rinks as well! -- and it sounds like a perfect situation for your rink. Because we have the 4 foot boards and get so much wind, I'd be toast without stakes, but would love to go stake free if I could! Thanks for the feedback, hopefully we all have more consistent cold temps next ODR season. Thanks for following along each year and take care! Cheers
holy smokes is that alot of work, but it looks amazing, im sure you are the talk of the town, and that is great for the kids to be able to play on as well
Sooooo cool wish we had those types of ice rings when I was young but hey we still had fun I remember when I was a 10 years old my friends and I made a rink after we heard that we were going to have rain so we cleaned a huge rink two days after we had natural ice we had no boards but we played for 2 months
awesome video Petey! i love watching your yearly rink builds!! definitely my favorite ODR channel. i lied. Your channel is my favorite hockey channel period!
My rink is already open for the season a week before Thanksgiving! I can’t believe it. I was watching your video again to see if you in fact trimmed the liner once the ice was playable. I’ll do that today.
Thats awesome you are up already! We are filling as we speak. Yep, I trimmed basically an inch or 2 above ice level. Looks so much better than that the plastic liner draped over :) I still find that the shovel gets caught on it a bit, but worth it! Hope the rink is going great thus far! Do you do the tall boy boards too?
I have been waiting for this video. It’s been a pleasure watching your rink game evolve. It’s amazing the work you put in. Nice job! Hope you liked the goods from Sweden. Looked like it was a nice mix of snacks there. Hello from 🇸🇪
Hey! Thanks for your patience and for taking the time to watch the rink builds each year. I've never been to Sweden but would like to visit someday. We've been to Norway as my family originally came over from the Lillehammer area, but need to get to Sweden as well. It was a really good mix of snacks Martin sent. My wife said those Swedes really know how to make a good chocolate bar, and said they are better than anything we have in the States :) My hockey rink videos are most viewed by folks in the USA, followed by Canada, then Sweden! Definitely fun to get to chat with fellow hockey players and rink builders around the world. Thanks for taking the time to reach out and have a great weekend!
Oh it’s definitely my pleasure to enjoy your builds and videos. Welcome to Sweden when you get a chance and make sure you eat some chocolate bars while you’re here hehe! We do know how to make good candy. I have a brother living in Seattle so my visits to him have been many through the years, I always bring lots of candy and potato chips with me..more so than clothes and personal stuff haha! I’m not a player or rink builder myself I just enjoy people doing stuff with their hands, crafting and building. Keep it up and hope the knee is healing well! Take care of yourself and the family.
I did get some skating in and there was enough snow to build our annual toboggan run. We launch from a picnic table off our deck (and put plywood to protect the stairs) and then have it weave in the backyard as it goes downhill.
great day when pete uploads, i do miss the project videos and what not but i also understand that people take brakes from work, cant wait to see the next one man
Thanks so much for following along with the channel despite changes in types of videos sometimes. I appreciate it. Will get some more woodworking content up this year. Thanks man!
@DIYPETE always man love it, I remember when your wife was in the military and you were making videos in the garage I've been here a while and the quality only has hone up keep it up man
Yeah we were in Spearfish for a wedding a few years ago and I picked it up at a coffee shop. I actually grew up in Aberdeen! Thanks for watching the hockey rink build video! Cheers
I do not watch hockey nor know do I even know the rules, I can skate and can definitely maneuver and control a puck.., .I think this is amazing..ur kids must be impressed.. Bro , I'm smiling just watching this and picturing myself becoming the next Wayne Gretzky
I see Zamboni makes a Model 100 that can be towed by any garden tractor. Seems to cost around $10k. Not cheap, but with all that you put into building the rink, it might be a good addition.
Thanks for the ideas! I like the idea of painting lines as well for a professional look during the day. My hesitation is the color of the line absorbing sunlight and causing melting where the lines are. ( if you leave a puck, goal, or even a leaf gets on it will absorb energy from the sun and melt the area quickly. Do you know how the paint does outdoors? If it would work well I'd love to try it. And if anyone is reading this discussion and has tried the ice paint outdoors I'd love to hear about your experience with it. Thanks guys!
Thanks so much! Potentially boards all around, more accessories ( stick holders etc ) - small bleacher setup -- always open to ideas! I tried to do a giant outdoor projection screen this season but unfortunately projectors don't do well in cold weather. If ya have any ideas for upgrades let me know!
Hey just out of curiosity, since you put the rink pretty much in the same spot every year now... why dont you just flat concrete that particular area for a much more conducive flat surface for ice? Then in Summer you have a slab of concrete for other activities.
Hey Joe! I do get a new liner each year. Unfortunately, even if it is not trimmed, it’s near impossible to salvage, especially with this size. One small tear or hole ( which is bound to happen from skates, pucks, etc - even with kick plates) will create a huge headache and pain in the but. I have salvaged to do a smaller rink at a friends and that was possible. But I would say every experienced rink builder I have talked to buys a new one each season. I do put mine on fb marketplace after the season and usually a farmer will pick it up and use it to cover their hay. Cheers!
If you store your boards outside anyways then why not just leave them up year round? I'm thinking of building a smaller rink, but putting those boards up every year seems very time consuming.
Hey! The biggest reason is wind where we live in the foothills right up near the mountains. We get 70mph winds from time to time and even with them all staked down, they can become sails. Once the weight of the water / ice is in they are rock solid, but honestly the wind here is the biggest reason. ( as you mentioned, we do store them outside so keeping them up would be easier ). For most people this wouldn't be an issue, it is just where our rink is situated. Mowing / trimming all the grass around the supports and brackets would be a pain, but doable. We actually are doing a different sized rink this season. It took us about 3 hours to put up all the boards and stakes so not too bad. Doing a smaller one would definitely be quite a bit faster. You can see how the setup looks in your backyard though and make your call! Looking forward to you doing a rink!
I still haven't tried curling but seriously need to. -- so doing paint / marks in outdoor ice can have issues with the painted areas collecting sunlight and then melting in those areas. But if anyone has any advice on doing painted lines in outdoor ice i'd love to hear. --- Dan, curling would be super fun to add at some point. I will have to look into doing so! Cheers
Hey! I didn't get a chance to hang up all the country flags this year as I just didn't get around to ordering new ones. I have to replace them each year because the wind really takes a toll on them. I'm sure you recognized the Norway, USA, Canada, Olympic, and state flag were all missing. They'll be back in the future! :) Cheers
Hey! There is not I actually tore my ACL playing mens league at the start of the season so unfortunately wasn't able to to the build. Here is a little more on it: th-cam.com/video/wn9_Z5y15xw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xKTp28RY4-0MBLyi&t=1707
You're not worried about drying up your well by using this every year? I've used it a couple times for a swimming pool. Even though we've been assured there is plenty of water, we still worry haha.
Well, you can't hire anyone in our area to do it, so I was luckily able to borrow my friends 4000 gallon water truck. Then I had a find a volunteer driver for it who had a CDL and get them to help for 2 days. Time back and forth to fill the tank was around 2 hours or so and it basically took 2 days to fill. The well takes between 3-4 days and is much easier to do. We have a really good aquifer so no issues with that. Got quotes on replacing a well pump and worst case scenario I'll have to replace it at some point, which it has already outlasted it's recommended life span. I did downsize this year for the rink so it is will take 2 days to fill. So basically, it is just a lot easier to turn on the hose and then turn it off. Versus the whole water truck process. Almost done filling ours this year so will be 5 years of filling it with the well. Knock on wood! Cheers
Hey! haha it will be up to him, but he is a righty and if he follows in his dad's footsteps he will be a winger! I am a lefty and played left wing, but will see what he does! Hope all is well in Idaho and thanks for watching!
That’d sure be nice for helping keep the snow off and sunshine! Would definitely miss some aspects of the ODR feel but certainly would make things easier. Cheers!
Tell your wife that a Zamboni is coming and that it’s for the children. Safer, better quality ice and as a result you’ll have more time to spend with the family🤷🏻♂️
Genius! :) It's all for the kids. That's what it is all about. I will have a heart to heart with her and heed your advice. haha brilliant! cheers man. love it.
This is literately my dream, your ODR build is EXACTLY how i a=imagine my dream odr. It looks incredible! love the videos! also, how much would you say the total cost was and do you live in Canada because i soppose that would make it easer right? thanks and love your videos! -Finn
Thanks so much man! It has been a lot of fun. So I believe the current board setup we use is around $9000 or so with the taller boards. The liner is around $1000-1500. Lights, netting extra is additional, but hopefully that gives a good estimate. The company's website has instant pricing that you can calculate a custom size on here: www.nicerink.com/build-your-rink - We are in the United States but at an elevation of 5,220 feet which helps for a longer season of skating. Thanks for following along man!

I look forward to this video every year. My wife and I just finished building on 6 acres in Canada and I cannot wait to get a rink out there.

Thanks Neil! Hope all is well !
This is obviously a labor of love. This guy covers all the bases and does quality work. I am sure he is a success at any task.
Indeed he is dedicated to his pastime
Pete I have been waiting for this video since last year! The rink looked great as usual!!
Thanks so much Gabe! Hope all is well man!
This a lobour of love because a ton of work is invloved. Always finessing it as the winter season passes.

Thanks so much! Hope all is well!
I watch every year from Los Angeles. Go Kings! I look forward to it. Year 6: Zamboni garage!
Thanks so much! haha, that is not a bad idea on the Zam garage! :) may have to get the ball rolling on a shop!

So cool. I wish I could make one of these where I live
I can't wait to see an acrobatic drone light show inn 2025 ;) . Great work as usual and it looks like much fun was had by all.
Haha that would be epic! Thanks for watching man! Hope you got in some skating this season!
I did get some skating in and there was enough snow to build our annual toboggan run. We launch from a picnic table off our deck (and put plywood to protect the stairs) and then have it weave in the backyard as it goes downhill.
That sounds epic!
I come back every year for the backyard ice rink build... please tell me you have another one coming...?
Thanks so much! Yep doing year 6 initial freeze as we speak! Should be ready to skate on in a few days!
@@DIYPETE AWESOME!!!!

Awesome Video!
Thanks for being patient for it to come out! Hope you had a great ODR season!!
I just subscribed left some comments greating from 🇨🇦
That is a ton of work! Looks sick though.
Thanks! Yeah definitely a ton of work. Worth it though for the memories it creates! Cheers!
Wow… your ideas… first the awesome rink. The pickle ball rink. Incredible. Your pal, Pete in Carrollton, TX
Hey Pete! Great to hear from you and thanks for watching! Hope all is well down in Carrollton! Cheers
I see Zamboni makes a Model 100 that can be towed by any garden tractor. Seems to cost around $10k. Not cheap, but with all that you put into building the rink, it might be a good addition.
Pete it's nearly that time of year please tell me theres going to be another for this season! i live mid england so I dont get the cold for it hahaha
Hey Brandon! Filling the rink as we speak! Year 6 is in the works!
@DIYPETE absolutely buzzing! Can't wait to see it next year! Have a great Christmas with the family!
Thanks Brandon! Merry Christmas to your family too!
Great rink yet again! Cheers from Michigan 😄
Thanks David! Hope you had a good ODR season over in Michigan! Cheers!
Next year you should do a goal line LED and also add lines to the liner and make it look more professional. Great Rink! :)
Beautiful rink! Go Knights Go!
Thanks so much!
Awesome video Pete!
Hey thanks Brad! Hope your family is doing well man!
What upgrades do you think you will make next year
Thanks so much!
Then in Summer you have a slab of concrete for other activities.
will we get a rink video this year? 🙏
Yep! Rink is currently freezing as we speak! I do updates @diypete on instagram if ya want to check that out! Cheers!
THIS IS SO COOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!! Really fun video to watch!!!
Thanks!
I love this! plus im sure its said a ton but get ready for the NHL stadium series to come lol
haha someday ! :) Cheers!
i'm assuming you buy a new liner every season since you trimmed it?
Cheers!
I love what you do your rink is amazing wish hou the best of luck
Thanks a ton!
I really love youre videos. Regards from Sweden. Not Örebro but from Sweden. Go Frölunda :)
Thank you! Great to hear from you all the way over in Sweden!
I want so badly for you to have a Zamboni!
Haha, I agree, would be epic. Might have to trailer one out sometime just to say it has been done :)
Love these videos!
Thanks so much for taking the time to check it out and for commenting! Hope all is well man!! Cheers
the rink looks so nice but so much work
Thanks! Definitely a labor of love.
Pete - Thoughts on adding curling marks on the rink this year?
I still haven't tried curling but seriously need to. -- so doing paint / marks in outdoor ice can have issues with the painted areas collecting sunlight and then melting in those areas. But if anyone has any advice on doing painted lines in outdoor ice i'd love to hear. --- Dan, curling would be super fun to add at some point. I will have to look into doing so! Cheers
Lets Go Pete !!!!!!
Thanks for watching Gregg! Cheers man!
Hi Pete can not find the norway flagg. Do i have to sned you one?
:) Cheers
😮 Chama 🔥
I love you Lika She Wolff 🇬🇪 Jojua 💕🌹💯
Next year you should add face off circles lights into your rink
haha that would be awesome. someday!
Is there a video of the 2022 2023 season?
Ah ok, great video👍 excited for next year
Neat!, thanks!
Thanks!
Maybe next year you can put up some cameras and do live feeds. You could sell some advertising spots too, maybe to a Zamboni sponsor.
Thanks! I've thought about selling spots at some point, may be in the future:) Cheers!
You're not worried about drying up your well by using this every year? I've used it a couple times for a swimming pool. Even though we've been assured there is plenty of water, we still worry haha.
CooL!
Thank you for taking the time to comment and watch the video man!
Im still shocked you use your well to fill that beast. How did you go about getting that advice to abandon the water truck?
Cheers
It looks fun the whole handful of times you can skate it, but it also looks like waaaaaay too much work
Pete, what Hockey position is your Son going to play? Cheers from Idaho!
Hey! haha it will be up to him, but he is a righty and if he follows in his dad's footsteps he will be a winger! I am a lefty and played left wing, but will see what he does! Hope all is well in Idaho and thanks for watching!
Hi i was wondering if you have an email i have some questions about somethings things that you have plus i wanna ship you a flag for your rink
Hey! Absolutely, a good email is info @ diy pete. com ( no spaces ) Cheers!
PETE U NEED TO PUT IN A WEATHER PROOF SCOREBOARD WITH GOAL LIGHTS A HORNS WHO AGREES DOWN BELOW 👇
Dude that would be sick! haha, will add it to the list :) Cheers!
Very cool but Labor Intensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you could do it......a roof.
I will have a heart to heart with her and heed your advice. haha brilliant! cheers man. love it.
"Promo sm" 😻
Thanks!
Tons of work! But well worth the effort
