Charlie Watts is who drove Stones' songs like this one and "Shattered." Like Ringo, Charlie Watts set as steady a beat as any band could ask for. Rest in Peace, Charlie

Off the "Some Girls" album from 1978.....a rock treasure!....a band can't endure through the decades without changing their sound and style, but it needs to be done without changing your soul and passion.....The Stones have done that better than anyone!

@@KASPA-KEY Not really. The Beatles are the most popular act ever, but that doesn't make them the best. The Stones influenced the sound of popular music and the attitude of rock and roll way more. They are the archetypal rock band. The Beatles never released an album better than Sticky Fingers, Exile, or Let It Bleed. Even the genius that is Abbey Road has to carry the dead weight that is the totally uncool "Maxwell's Silver Hammer".

The Rolling Stones played "Beast OF Burden" on Saturday Night Live, after the album Tattoo You was released, and Mick Jagger almost stepped over the line with his performance, but not quite. Yeah, he licked Ron Wood's face... lol Also, at the time they were just about the only musical act that was allowed to do one set, rather than have it split it two on SNL. And, they skipped over Miss You which had been their #1 song at the time, opting for Shattered and When the Whip comes down (if I recall right). They appeared in a couple of skits on that show as well. Fairly memorable appearance, although Mick's voice was shot that night, and for most of the small tour they did that year. Allegedly they were better in rehearsal (although the studio audience was pleased with the actual performance). And, apparently Keith was drinking and had a scuffle with Bill Murray... or so it was said at one time. It was the season opener for SNL and Mayor Ed Koch was guest host. Jagger bowed low to kiss his hand to close out the show.

Damn, Lex not only did you feel the essence of this song so much, I loved your knowledge about pounding it in with the nail and then using pliers pull up out and repeating and likening that to the opposing forces of tension in this song. To me that's just a brilliant insight. And Brad totally cracks me up. But yeah one thing I've always found interesting about this addictive song is that in the choruses he's saying, I'll never be your Beast of burden. You cannot whip me into submission I will not be pussy with etc. And yet a line that gets repeated so much in the song or at least twice at the beginning and the end, is about how he's walked all these miles for her and his feet are hurting. What a strange juxtaposition. It's all about the emotional ultimately I think and it's just a great groove. This album some girls, was just so wonderful when it came out. They had been through kind of a bad period this came out when I was in 9th grade and I had my first girlfriend in 10th Grade she went out and bought it and it had this pull out sleeve where it had all these cut out faces in it and it was all psychedelic colored and it was women wearing different kinds of bras and people wearing different kinds of makeup it was very tactile and 3D and then it turned out to be this fantastic album. Every song on this album is really wonderful. Take your pick.

My favorite Stone song next to Satisfaction. What you really need to hear is the live version from Houston-it's on Youtrube-the Stones were so raw back then-that is why so many people loved them over the Beatles-they played great dance music and they played it raw and rocking. Watch the live version-they just absolutely kill it. From 1965-to 1975 no one touched them for being such a great dance band-you could just get out on the floor and dance all night to the Stones.

A "beast of burden" is an animal, usually domesticated, that labors for the benefit of man, such as an ox or a horse. The music and some of the lyrics were primarily written by Keith Richards who came up with the title. In the liner notes to the 1993 compilation disc Jump Back, Richards said "Beast of Burden" "was another one where Mick (Jagger) just filled in the verses.
In 2003 Richards said, "When I returned to the fold after closing down the laboratory (referring to his drug problems throughout the 1970s), I came back into the studio with Mick... to say, 'Thanks, man, for shouldering the burden' - that's why I wrote "Beast of Burden" for him, I realize in retrospect."

The Some Girls album was a sort of transition Album for the Stones. Transitioning from the 70's to the 80's. I didn't like the album at first but once I listened to it a time or three, I now love it.

You have listened to quite a few Stones songs so you know how good and varied they are. My favorites that you haven't done yet are Miss You and You Can't Always Get What You Want (studio version, not live version), but everyone will have different faves.

@@fuchsiaswing8545 I do. I'm more of Floyd fan than any of those, but tended towards the psychedelic stuff: Floyd, later Beatles and Zepplin, I also hit some obscure stuff that's not worth mentioning, but it wasn't till I made my way back around, that I could really appreciate the Stones for their journey through music.

I loved Bette Midler's cover as a kid in the 80s and I didn't even know it's a Stones song, not for a long time.
But nowadays I prefer the original, that rarely happens, usually I stick to the versions I heard first, I think that goes for everybody.

The Stones banger about the little sister is titled, appropriately enough, "Dance Little Sister". That song cooks. Check it out.
