This song came out I think in 1980 and they took a bit of a hit for the disco influence from some fans and critics but in the end, they were the Stones and they could do whatever they wanted. This song eventually became a regularly played song at their live concerts as fans pretty much embraced it in the end.

The rhythm section of Wyman and Watts really make this song. That bass groove just hooks you and Charlie's deceptively simple drumming bring it together before the guitars and sax come in. Of course Mick singing in falsetto for most of the song takes you off guard and I love his spoken part at the end of the song. This video highlights why Mick is one of rock's greatest frontmen and I must say I've always loved this song - great reaction, guys.
One problem with your comment- Bill Wyman doesn’t play bass on this song, it’s Ronnie Wood. Wyman never played that many notes in his life. Wood played bass in the Jeff Beck Group years ago too.
"Emotional Rescue" was like a joke, but we were all in on it, so it was OK. This is in the immediate aftermath of Saturday Night Fever and during the disco era. There's a little Barry Gibb falsetto and a disco-like beat. Mick dancing around like a chicken having a seizure. I'd like to think that they were totally high when they wrote this one. That would explain a lot.
I used to hang out with crazy punk rockers about when this album came out. They HATED "hippy music", like 60's-early 70's. But this album, and the Stones were "punk-approved". They were always on the EDGE.
I thought the Mick Taylor period was their most Punk period, The Stones were inspired by the Velvet Underground, MC5 and The Stooges, Bakersfield Sound and Americana Rock when they broke away from the British Invasion sound in 1968 with Beggar's Banquet. Richards and Iggy looked Punk Rock a few years before there was a look in 77', edgy and unkept and Iggy with his stage performance. I love Punk and protopunk. Protopunk and Hendrix, Keith Moon, John Entwistle were the influences for making Rock harder and more alternative in the 70s. Their legacies stretch to today and keep stretching.
When i was in the Punk scene between 1985 to 1990 the only classic artists that i remember people were cool with was David Bowie & The Who. The Mod's were the first true Punks in the 60's.

I love this song. As others have said, it came out at the height of the disco craze and I can just imagine the Stones--previously dubbed the greatest rock and roll band in the world, looking at each other and saying, well we can do disco, too. A brilliant concept beautifully executed.
The album "Some Girls" is my favorite Stones era, I was 12 in 1978 and it was my first real awareness of them in pop culture. The song "Shattered" blew my pubescent mind.

This song was released right about the beginning of my junior year of high school in 1980. This has always been one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs, and they have a ton of songs I love. This song really immediately makes me think of high school and those 3 amazing years (10-12). 👅
With the old rock bands like this, when the question is "where do they get that energy from?" the answer is almost always copious amounts of coke. Ironically, the only one who generally didn't partake was Charlie. In fact I'm pretty sure it was the Stones who were partying in a hotel room when a friend went to answer the door and shouted "It's the police!" so they ran to the bathroom to flush all the drugs, only to come back out and be greeted by Sting.
In the 90’s the Stones released their Voodoo Lounge album. The single from the album was “”Love is Strong”. The song is somewhat similar to “Emotional Rescue”. Strange video with it too.
When this song came out, The Bee Gees and their falsetto voices owned the radio, plus the Stones had just had a big hit with their other disco-influenced song "Miss You", so it probably made sense to them to do another disco-ish song. But "Emotional Rescue" is a lot more tongue-in-cheek than "Miss You" - the whole idea of Mick being "a knight in shining armor, coming to you on a fine Arab charger" is intentionally out-there, but it looks like they're having a lot of fun with this song.
It's crazy how you can remember things, like the first time my dad ever played this song for me. He used to clean the American Legion Hall post 307 in New Orleans to get a discount on our rental house owned by the Legion, and we were there cleaning and setting up for Sunday bingo. What is great about this song, how smoothly it can fit into Disco, Rock and New Wave. I remember fellow high school students being highly critical of this song. First time hearing it, was at a high school dance. I was in an Atlanta night club in 85 and the DJ mixed Marvin Gayes "Got To Give It Up" with "Emotional Rescue". We tore that dance floor up.

I love the Stones, but this one is my favorite. The funky bass (I'm surprised Jay didn't comment on that!) The vocals, falsetto at first then suddenly super low. The ooh ah ooh ah ah ooh ah ah ah. There's just something about it all that I just love.

Hard to believe this was over forty three years ago, and I remember how much I hated this song when it came out. It was going down the disco road that started with Miss You, and was obviously a Jagger thing since he was hanging around the discos of New York. All I know is how solid Charlie is (RIP) and hearing Bobby Keyes on sax again is priceless.
My late husband was a big Stones fan and I wasn’t. This song was one of two that I liked that they did and this was the one (and possibly the only) song he didn’t like. I didn’t realize Mick was so much fun to watch. I’ll have to check out more of the band’s videos.
The Rolling Stones have some great funky, danceable tunes that were never even released as singles -- album tracks only. One of the really filthy, funky ones from the mid 70s is "Fingerprint File", while two of their other strong (if not the strongest) of their disco influenced tunes are "Dance (Pt 1)" and "If I was a Dancer (Dance Pt 2)" -- also from the Emotional Rescue sessions. They got a lot more than those two but those are stand outs for me.
Ya'll, this was a big hit when I was just starting Jr. High School, which is what we boomers had before somebody came up with "middle school ". But we didn't think it was weird, it hadn't been that long since they did the song "Fool to Cry" which was one of my favorites, and Mick Jagger was singing in falsetto on the choruses.. Who would have thought, the Stones and Disco, but they made it happen, I remember seeing the Stones in 1981 at the LA Coliseum with the J. Giels band, George Thorogood, and Prince of all people opening the show. Prince, who at the time, was not known, lasted about three songs then got booed off the stage with the crowd throwing things at him. At the time I had never heard of Prince, so I thought "well I guess we'll never see that guy again"! Little did we know he would come back and be one of the biggest, If not the biggest acts of the 80's

Watched an hour-long documentary about Charlie Watts and i had to laugh. Charlie seemed so laid back. Bernard Fowler, who was a back-up singer for the Stones on tour and in the studio for many years, quoted something Charlie said----i think the Glimmer Twins must have been acting up. Charlie said, "Oh for God's Sake Bernard, what are they on about?". Charlie was a great lover of jazz and he showed off the collection of drum sets he accumulated of the great drummers over the years. I think it said he had a 100 or more sets; all labeled with whom they belonged to. He even had a drum set that belonged to DJ Fontana, Elvis's drummer, that Elvis bought for Fontana in Houston. RIP CHARLIE WATTS.

Bobby Keyes on Sax. Toured with them, performed on many albums for multiple bands. I used to look for him on the liner notes of my albums in the 70's.

What is great about this song, how smoothly it can fit into Disco, Rock and New Wave. I remember fellow high school students being highly critical of this song. First time hearing it, was at a high school dance. I was in an Atlanta night club in 85 and the DJ mixed Marvin Gayes "Got To Give It Up" with "Emotional Rescue". We tore that dance floor up.

I really thought you guys had done this one before. It's another one of those surprising Stones tunes where it completely obliterates your expectations and it takes a minute to sink in...but eventually becomes an absolute classic.

Mick is a trip. They say that we are all made star stuff, literally. Well, the composition of his star stuff is very different from anyone else’s. He’s one of a kind and awesome.
I love the Stones, but this one is my favorite. The funky bass (I'm surprised Jay didn't comment on that!) The vocals, falsetto at first then suddenly super low. The ooh ah ooh ah ah ooh ah ah ah. There's just something about it all that I just love.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song! FINALLY! Simply because he has this high falsetto range in the beginning of this song, then he can go back to normal and change it up again! I love it and that one part where he says "Mm, yes you could be mine, tonight and every night, I'll be your night and shining armor coming to your emotional rescue" I look forward to that part of the song too. My first time watching this video and I let a "Whooo"! I didn't know we were going to get a little tush action from Mick Jagger in the video! My highlight too Amber! I too am a middle child! It's funny you mentioned favorites because this one IS my favorite RS song, tied with Miss You. 😂 One of my all-time favorite songs, period. 8 year old me in 1980 just instantly loved it!
Hard to believe this was over forty three years ago, and I remember how much I hated this song when it came out. It was going down the disco road that started with Miss You, and was obviously a Jagger thing since he was hanging around the discos of New York. All I know is how solid Charlie is (RIP) and hearing Bobby Keyes on sax again is priceless.
The Stones were a couple of decade before me in age, but I became obsessed with everything about them. They are the greatest, in my opinion.

My late husband was a big Stones fan and I wasn’t. This song was one of two that I liked that they did and this was the one (and possibly the only) song he didn’t like. I didn’t realize Mick was so much fun to watch. I’ll have to check out more of the band’s videos.

Got this album on cassette in the 80’s .Loved it 🎉and still do.
The Rolling Stones have some great funky, danceable tunes that were never even released as singles -- album tracks only. One of the really filthy, funky ones from the mid 70s is "Fingerprint File", while two of their other strong (if not the strongest) of their disco influenced tunes are "Dance (Pt 1)" and "If I was a Dancer (Dance Pt 2)" -- also from the Emotional Rescue sessions. They got a lot more than those two but those are stand outs for me.
Ya'll, this was a big hit when I was just starting Jr. High School, which is what we boomers had before somebody came up with "middle school ". But we didn't think it was weird, it hadn't been that long since they did the song "Fool to Cry" which was one of my favorites, and Mick Jagger was singing in falsetto on the choruses.. Thats a good one for ya'll to react to!
Who would have thought, the Stones and Disco, but they made it happen, I remember seeing the Stones in 1981 at the LA Coliseum with the J. Giels band, George Thorogood, and Prince of all people opening the show. Prince, who at the time, was not known, lasted about three songs then got booed off the stage with the crowd throwing things at him. At the time I had never heard of Prince, so I thought "well I guess we'll never see that guy again"! Little did we know he would come back and be one of the biggest, If not the biggest acts of the 80's

There are so many good songs but these are musts to react to.😊

Charlie, RIP, looked as if he was asleep whilst playing! This was a big US hit back in 1980, reaching number 2 on the pop charts. Fool to cry is another song in which mick sings falsetto.

Watched an hour-long documentary about Charlie Watts and i had to laugh. Charlie seemed so laid back. Bernard Fowler, who was a back-up singer for the Stones on tour and in the studio for many years, quoted something Charlie said----i think the Glimmer Twins must have been acting up. Charlie said, "Oh for God's Sake Bernard, what are they on about?". Charlie was a great lover of jazz and he showed off the collection of drum sets he accumulated of the great drummers over the years. I think it said he had a 100 or more sets; all labeled with whom they belonged to. He even had a drum set that belonged to DJ Fontana, Elvis's drummer, that Elvis bought for Fontana in Houston. RIP CHARLIE WATTS.

I'm also 62 and was used to album releases, but started out hearing a lot of the songs as singles on the radio before I lived where there was FM album rock or could afford to buy them. I have seen both of the new videos and am waiting for October 20th. Great stuff so far. Hope Jay and Amber do Angry and Sweet Sounds Of Heaven.
