As a professional Locksmith and contractor of over 30 years with 100,000 jobs completed, I must say Wayne did an excellent job! Thank you Wayne, Danny From La Jolla Locksmith in San Diego.
Thanks a ton for making this video, this video convinced me to do the swap myself instead of paying a locksmith $150, and I can now get into my safe in 3 seconds flat.. so much better than the combo lock that came on the safe. Thanks man!!
DUDE! That info at 25:55 in the video is SUPER IMPORTANT as that is what was causing my problems. I actually had to take a Dremel tool with a circular diamond blade and cut the metal an opening around it to get it to work finally. WOW!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Thanks Wayne. I had problems with my Browning safe right out of the box, but it was a small fix. The electronic lock was screwed in too tight from inside the door and it was preventing the catch from locking. I came back off on the screws a tiny tad and it worked fine. I wasn't sure how that secondary dead bolt mechanism was suppose to fire to operate, but your video explained it all, plus showed me how to replace or upgrade my digital key pad. Thanks again. JD
Thank you for this video!! Im very hands on with things. My grandparents gun safe is the old spin dial lock and they want to upgrade to electronic. I started to look into some info online and found your channel. Your video has helped me tremendously!
Great video, Wayne! Thanks a bunch!!! I just installed an ESL20 on my Champion Medalist and replaced the S&G dial lock within 20 minutes. Didn't even have to redrill the relocker plate.
I have a Winchester 24 gun safe I keep having issues with the elec. Digital locks I am going to switch it to a manual mech. Lock so I won't have anymore issues with digital issues. I am thinking on getting a canon or liberty safe next but have to be broken in with this Winchester safe presently. This video showed me I can transition from digital to mechanical. Thank you, thank you for this video. will R.
Thank you! I have a gun safe that I purchased that needs the lock replaced. The bolt is missing from the inside, and I was wondering how it operated. Your video made it as clear as day.
Wayne, Thank you for your time and effort in producing this video. It was just what I needed to step through the entire process before attempting the change on my FatBoy. It was interesting to see a comment about the quality. I have a masters and a career in educational and training television and totally liked your production. It was real and not designed to be slick. It was a welcome gift from someone who had the knowledge and willingness to share. THANKS! If you are in the Denver area, I would buy you a beer!
I notice some locks have a rectangle/ridged bolt and some have a tapered/curved bolt. Do you know if the secuRAM electronic lock is compatible with any of the better rated S&G mechanical locks? Thank you for the great video. You seem to know exactly what you’re doing.
I received an upgraded opener handle from my safe manufacturer. From the looks of the safe door, once the inside cover is off, it looks like just one nut has to come off in order to change out the opener handle for a hub/spoke handle. Is that something a layman can handle or are special skills required? It is a dial lock. Thanks
Hello I have a sentry dial safe but does not have a box in the inside like the one in the video you are replacing. Do you have a site I can use to find what I need to purchase?
Good video, thanks. Is it possible to buy a second electronic lock, set it with the combo of the original digital lock and keep the new one in reserve for when the original digital face breaks, quits working? Then could I just plug the new face in and open the safe?
Hey Wayne, I love your video and thanks for the great informative help. I want to ask you if I can change my Sturdy Safe mechanical S&G combo lock to digital like in this video? I am worried since it has a relocker behind the lock inside the safe as well as one on the side like in your video. Thanks again. -Alex
I have a big safe with a Seargent & Greenleaf dial lock and its hard for me to see and open so Im looking at replacing it with a keypad. Is that the best brand to buy?
Just a question I bought a Fort Knox safe from BJ’s. It has a electronic lock. I need to put a bio metric key pad to be able to get a pistol permit. What I am asking can a liberty scan logic key pad be installed.
wayne, very helpful- I have one --its an SG- and I want to change it out like you did- but when I open the electronic lock, it automatically closes by itself in a few seconds. Theoretically the bolts would be open so the hole would be blocked, I am assuming it does that so that when you close the bolts it will lock by itself. Some of the bolts on the locks have one side radiused,---what does that accomplish? My lock/safe is right hand closing or whatever, and that concerns me that it might be an issue with this electronic lock automatically closing after a few seconds. Every time I have seen one installed, even on yours, its a down locking. I'm just concerned I might need that radiused kind of bolt on the electronic lock. Do you know what I am talking about? Thanks Wayne.
Great video!! I have a field and stream model: HEH00354. Do you know if I can swap the manual dial for a electronic keypad? I wasnt sure if field and stream sold the electronic keypad or I could buy any electronic keypad from greenlee or someone. Thanks for the video and any assistance.
What are your thoughts on the durability and functionality of the S&G Titan and Spartan D-drive and Pivot electronic locks? How do they compare to the S&G 6120 series?
Wayne Winton Great video, but when I tried I found out the factory broke off the 12 o'clock screw, not sure what to do, so I put the dial lock back on for now, any ideas?
Wayne: Just out of curiosity, what happens down the line if the solenoid goes bad? How do we get into our safe? Drill into the internal lock and inset a magnet? :)
One of my ket pads went bad. The lock dude tried another one but it has some kind of failsafe and it locked down. He ended up picking it with some kind of electronic device that took awhile. I had all of mine changed to dials because electronics are a serious pain in the ass, not to mention expensive. Not much to go wrong with a dial. I can unlock it almost as fast as a keypad and its EMP proof!
SecuRam makes one with a mechinical back up. It's not a key but there is a regular mechanical dial back up option. SecuRam extrem mechinical redundant safe locks
Wayne, I have a Winchester safe ('09) and the zero key stopped working. Fortunately the safe is open and I have ordered a replacement from Winchester. Is it very hard to change electronic keypad/electronic keypad.? Thanks........Glenn
this video shows the motions. It's the same thing to replace a direct replacment. For me it's not to bad but you have to make the final desition. If this video look complicated don't try it just hire a professional locksmith. Find one on the ALOA "find a locksmith web page : Here: findalocksmith.com/
Wayne. the electronic lock I'm replacing is a GSP, an '09 model with the three lights. If I want to replace it with a combination mechanical lock what would be a good replacement and where is the source to purchase it. Thanks.
Nice. if relocker is giving a person a hard time can you just disable it/take it out ?(understanding you have lessened the security of course.) Also, roughly how long /many Cycles does the solenoid last for before you become locked out with digital locks?
Removing the relocker can be done but it is highly NOT advised. As far as cycles go theya re all diffrent. a good estomate is 25,000 to 50,000 or 5 years depending on use.
I want to change my keypad to a spin dial because I am concerned it will break and leave me locked out, and the spin dial i believe is MUCH more reliable. I cant figure out how to take sheet rock off inside of Champion door without breaking it.
what kind of failures do you see out of these electronic locks? I use one of those AMSEC locks at work everyday, multiple times a day, and haven't had any failures in 8 years. I'm surprised it has been so reliable.
An interesting modification might be to leave the dial lock in the original place and mount the keypad lock to the left of it (as viewed from the outside). There looks to be enough room there to do it, but you would need to cut a slot in the bar for the mechanism's dead bolt to go through and possibly a mounting pad that attached to the inside of the door like is already used in the existing lock. This would allow you to just lock the safe with the keypad when you are home so that you could gain access to your firearm quickly, but to lock it with both locks when you are going to be away from home for any length of time and fast access to your firearms is not a concern... It looks like you have that safe in your garage though... Even if it is bolted down, that's not that great of an idea... You are putting the safe in a place where they can use a vehicle to pull it from the concrete and just drag it onto a truck or trailer, plus you are putting it in a location where you are likely providing them with all the tools they might need to gain access to your safe, just in case they didn't bring the necessary tools with them... Of course, there's also the issue of it not being a climate controlled environment...
My Winchester digital pad locked me out. Winchester customer service number says hi call volume email customer service. Meanwhile I'm locked out of my safe with no way to get in. Next safe will be a dial and not a Winchester.
Hi... my brother killed my father and then "pulled the pins" on his fortress combination safe... how do you even pull pins?? He then paid someone to weld them back together... Help me to understand please I can send videos and pictures
In future videos, please don’t rush your camera movements, make sure the camera catches what you are wanting to catch, and ensure your lighting lights the area focused on. Your video was terribly frustrating to follow along.
Small vise grips and screwdriver to remove the spline key. When your E Lock fails remember the orientation VD when you reinstall the mechanical lock. And don't forget, now you have made your safe so much faster to drill by installing a digital lock, less than 30 minutes depending on the hardplate. Just for fun, if you call Amsec and get the drill point for that particular safe, the final step shows using scissors.
American Security Amsec big red safe locks like this one are pretty good. These safe locks are pretty secure it's the safes job to protect the lock from attack.
Also remember that these are not "safes". They are "residential security containers". That steel on the door is too thin to be classified as a "safe". You would pay a lot more for a true safe and it would start out being rated at a UL TL-15 rating. That's 1" of steel in the door and body. For the size of "safe" that he has here, that would probably mean a starting price of around $4K.
One thing to be concerned about with keypad locks is whether the logic board is located inside the lock with the locking mechanism or if it is located outside the unit under the keypad. Locating it outside the unit under the keypad is a VERY POOR DESIGN since it most likely means that the wires feeding through the face of the door are just providing power to move the solenoid and if you remove the keypad, you could provide power to the appropriate conductors and the solenoid would activate even without entering the combination... It's a pretty basic concept, but there are still some cheap safe manufacturers out there that make this mistake...
Why would anyone change a dial to an electronic anything? Thats silly. I had all of mine changed to dials. When the keypad went bad on one it was almost impossible to open. Some crazy electronic thing got it open in about an hour and $300 later.
So any idiot can punch the lock and open the safe. He’s a real locksmith we are in business to provide security not remove it. And it doesn’t mean a new safe. It means you call one of us to open it.

great video, I like how you pointed out the little things that people overlook, I have a dial that didn't always work.
Dude you are a life saver, thanks for the video!
How old was that safe that you replaced the lock on?
Will this work for a stack on safe?
I have a few questions, is there any way to reach out and send you photo of a latch
Thanks Wayne, i was able to skip the locksmith and do it myself.

Hey will that lock system work on my red head safe i got from basspro

I have an old sears group 2 lock. Would it work to switch it?
Wayne, great video. Do you know what electronic keypad I would need to replace the manual dial on a Cannon Model 12 Fire-beater safe? Thanks
With the recent Liberty events, I need to go from digital to dial ( mechanical)
Would I be able to take a picture and send it to you and you tell me if the lock is replaceacle?
nice step by step direction were is your reverse video

found it, thanks for all your time

it should. The bolt pattern should be the same. Just check clearance on bolt wotk touching the lock bolt.
Thanks for the vid!

Amsec is the best one and the only one I recommend
Do you happen to know if the Liberty Revolution series is able to be changed from a Dial to Digital?
They can be changed. I don't know if you can buy them with a digital lock though.
In the case of an Emp your electronic block is going to fail and you're not gonna be able to access your safe. Switching mine to mechanical.

How about showing from ELECTRONIC to DIAL?
Cool except backwards 😎

Good video. But it really looks like none of these locks are really secure.
American Security Amsec big red safe locks like this one are pretty good. These safe locks are pretty secure it's the safes job to protect the lock from attack.

Your video demonstration on the relocker is not the best and hard to understand what you did and the purpose of the relocker
Take that darn relocker out it can be expensive if it trips pretty much means new safe.

I have an older stack-on safe with a dial, can this be upgraded to take a keypad?
@Gregg Sinini Thanks for *NOT* answering his question.
Anyone know the answer?
