Hi Shawn, just bought the original j21465 set with the original metal toolbox, although it was missing the j21465-17 bushing driver. The ring you were asking about, 21465-9, slides over 21465-8 to drive in the rear case bushing. you would remove the ring 21465-9 to drive out the rear case bushing, this is shown on page 91 figure 143 in the ATSG book. Mike
Its funny, but one of the things I have learned to do over the years [having worked on a bunch of equipment] is... start at the back of the manual - mainly because if there is anything in the way of elecrtical components, the drawings are usually there. Ingersoll Rand does that reliably, for example. In the case here, it would be nice to do a quick inventory of tools needed before opening the case? Yes, definitely.
shaun i bought the same kit after hearing you bought one and found out the hard way that its a counterfeit kit, the ring you didn't know of it's is surpose to fit the 1st mandrel you tried it on but they stuffed up made it to small inside to fit it's to press one of the drums with planetry gears in side. the two threaded removal items work well but you must grab your item well in the vice and screw them in pretty deep so they don't just pull out of the bearing, I had to machine two mandrels down a little as they seized in bearing when pressing in housings so i had to make them thinner to pull out easier and as for the long extension mandrel with hole in it i machined a bar of aluminum to fit in the bore that fits firmly down the threaded hole about 3/4 inch deep and on top machined maching diameter with head being 15 mm high with nicely radiused corner in order not to damage the threaded tube area ideally a threaded item would of been neater but i dont have the threading skills on my lathe or a large enough die nut so a push in plug was satisfactory for me, as for that ring you didnt see in the manual i noticed that to, i bought same manual because you recommended it, i must say it's very impressive, but i have noticed all the genuine tools came out in a silver semi shiny and some very shiny finish and seen that thin ring for sale a few times on ebay in silver under the factory name brand stating it was for the t400 drum with j part number i bought the samrear assy pick up quick realease handle and it to is a fake copy to. .
For your bushing driver set just get some 3/4 bolts of different lengths to hit on and protect drivers and threads. Bolts from a farm supply are soft and cheep and will work great
Bushing install, was my latest issue. Tailshaft to gear train bushing, wasn't deep enough, so couldn't get end play. Drove it in deeper and now all good.
How you doing buddy? Try to watch all your videos on the 400 when it comes to the pump stater bushing in your video. What is the part number on the tool to remove those bushings?
you need to screw them in deep use big shifter spanner you need to hold the item in the vise so you can tighten the screw tool tight enough then slide hammer the bush out . if it pulls out wilst hammering out leaves bush behind it means you didnt screw it in tight enough
Thank you so much..... if you feel like do another TH400 101 intro to tools.... I'd like to see your pump puller and your case holder.... thinking about making one.... have see one I like. And I would like to play around with th350 and 400s but on any scale like you. Mostly personal use. Have looked, have you got any powerglide hints?
Sean I have a question. I read awhile back when I was ordering my parts that the tail shaft bushing on some models, (i think it might have been the older 400s but I can't find that article again) but the replacement bushing could have 2 types. 1 was perfectly round and had no issue with fitment for the driveshaft yoke, the other was slightly oval and had to be machined to fit the driveshaft yoke. Have you ever heard or ran into that? Thanks. I enjoy your vids.
I went to eBay to search for this bushing tools kit. I see a few other GM bushing tool kits for half the price besides this one. Anyone have luck with those?

It's an adapter to install the rear case bushing so you don't drive it in to far
Good to know, And I thought maybe it was a seal driver... there's some editing to be done to that book. I'll add more notes today in my copy.
Great video my friend..Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge…
I tried the removers, I didn't have any luck with them working.

I would like to see the staking pliers used and what they do..just a suggestion for a video add on
Another great idea!

I have not heard of that, but sometimes they require a little honing after install.
I thought his name tag says, SHAWN.... smh
Good work
👍👍👍
Do most or all of the bushing drivers in this kit also work in a 4L80e?
Some do yes.
Who did you buy the turbo 400 bushing kit from and the part number on ebay thanks john
