1986: Washington Redskins vs San Diego Chargers Remastered NFL Highlights

  • The surprising '86 Redskins improved to 3-0, outlasting Dan Fouts and the high-scoring Chargers offense in this dramatic 30-27 comeback win in San Diego.
    The Chargers offense bolted out to a 21-3 first half lead and appeared unstoppable. But savvy defensive adjustments - and a little luck - put that lightning in a bottle as Washington outscored their hosts 27-6 over the last two and a half quarters. Art Monk and Gary Clark piled up the yardage, although it was Clark making the clutch catches at the end to pull out the improbable victory. The Redskins defense broke early, bent often but finally stiffened in the end to seal the win.
    This game, played so long ago(!), would actually be the last win for Washington over the Chargers in San Diego - although not quite the last win at Jack Murphy Stadium for Washington, of course (we're lookin' at you, Elway!).

    after the devastation of losing Theisman in 1985 I remember the 1986 Redskin season as one of the most exciting of the Gibbs era.

    Going into this season they were saying it's a re-building year. Schroeder for Theismann, Rogers for Riggins etc. But if it weren't for those darn 86 Giants (who were bloody good) we could have won the whole thing. Great memories!!! Monk & Clark. WOW!

    Schroeder 9th QB in NFL history to throw for 4k yards in. a season & THE Quarterback who dethroned the (highly overrated) '85 Bears in '86 at Soldier Field. Give the man some love. Thank you for posting. Hail.

      I still think if Gibbs gave him more time he could have done something good, he was still maturing. That’s my opinion.

      To this day, why Schroeder and Gibbs had their falling out is not clear. From afar, it looked like an attitude issue, perhaps difficulty with less sustained success in 87 vs 86? Schroeder’s number were clearly down in 87, and his accuracy went south, too. It must take a serious concern to demote your QB on the eve of the playoffs. Rumors regarding friction between Williams and Schroeder add to the mystery…

      In retrospect, the Giants had been building towards their ‘86 success x 4 seasons since parcells took over. The Redskins were regrouping after their star QB/running back tandem (and place kicker) had aged out. It’s amazing how successful the Skins were under these circumstances but were a few paces behind the Giants.
      Remember, the ‘86 Giants also beat the Broncos twice and the Niners twice (49-3 in the playoffs as I recall!). The Giants were a cut above everyone that season (like the ‘91 Redskins in that year). The ‘86 Skins were a surprising second best in the NFC with 14 wins to their credit. Hall to those Redskins, for sure!

      @@RetroSkins yeah I remember every year wondering how far the Redskins were going to make it in the playoffs, between having a front office that knew how to put together a team and a coaching staff that was stellar it seemed like they always had a good shot every season, it was a great time to be a fan.

    The Chargers have a history of going up big on opponents in the first half then taking their foot off the gas pedal and going down in ignominious defeat. They are masters of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

    The Redskins would return to The Murph as Chris Berman calls it and would win Super Bowl XXII 42-10 over the Denver Broncos. Broncos would lead 10-0, Redskins QB and Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams would score the next 42 points.

    Dan Fouts most overrated QB in NFL history playoff numbers are laughable. He was no Joe Theismann. Not even close. But his father was important so he's in HOF imho.

    • @stevep8445
      @stevep8445 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right/ Fouts was no Theismann, he was leaps and bounds better. Theismann had a good run in the 1982 postseason. but 1982 was a joke of a season by the way. NINE games??? Other than that he was average at best..
      Skins have ONE Super Bowl win that came in a full, completed season.
