  • One of the most effective routes in football, learn 2 variations of the snag we used in Tampa with the Bucs.
Welcome to elite athletes TV. I'm Mike Pawlawski, 11 year pro quarterback and quarterbacks coach here at www.eliteathletestv.com. Today, it's time for a little install. I'm going back to my Tampa Bay Buccaneers playbook under Sam Wyche directly from Bill Walsh. We're learning the original West Coast version of the snag route. We're also going to take a look at college game film.
The snag is one of the most common plays in college offenses. Most of the teams across the country at least have a version of it. I'm going to show you a couple different versions that we use down in Tampa with the Bucs for different reads.
This play is a simple read for a quarterback. If you get a good match in man coverage, Y on the corner route against a strong safety or linebacker, and you feel like it, take your shot on the corner route. You also have the ability to tag the backside with the route of your choice. You have a runaway route by your z receiver in Sam's progression, on your shallow cross. Runaways are always man beaters, that's a good throw. Third in your progression, you're going to take that half back to the flat. Some teams versus man read this differently. Some teams will read the corner route to the half back flat versus man, I understand that progression. I like that progression. It keeps your eyes on the same side. And it still works however you read it versus man. It's a great play.
If you get zone, let's say a team wants to play you cover 2, as a quarterback, your pre snap read in cover 2 your thinking I want to throw that corner route. Then you key that flat defender. If he covers the half back out in the flat on his way out. I'm going to throw my Y open I don't want to keep him on this high angle. I'm going to make him come down to the ball. The quarterback wants to lead him out to green grass, to throw him open. I like the snag concept off of a five step drop. You can throw those quick windows. Some teams are shortening down to a three step drop. I think that's too quick of a read for a quarterback to let it develop. The Snag is a super simple triangle read on the outside.
So you can see a snag route is a great route easy reads for the quarterback quick decisions easy throws with an opportunity for big plays in there as well.

If you're thinking about putting the Snag concept in your offense, that's how you read it easy for a quarterback you should definitely do it just takes a little bit of quarterback training.
