24 Hours Finding Ancient Rock Art In A Remote Arizona Canyon - Part Three

  • This Video Is Part Three
I had to split this video into three parts since I ended up finding so much incredible ancient rock art from the Anasazi culture (Ancestral Puebloan)!
I decided I needed to spend the night in this remote canyon in the Arizona desert so I could take my time looking at rock art. What makes this canyon or section of canyon so incredible is the dense concentration of rock art left behind by a culture that thrived in this area close to a thousand years ago. The stories these canyons walls could tell. And they do. As I spent the time slowly moving down and investigating both sides of the canyon I began to see different styles of art. One style was abundant pictographs (paintings), another was scratchings that were used to try and erase the pictographs and also created more images, and then a much older style that was rare and almost vanished...obviously the more ancient of the styles. I even discovered a panel of petroglyphs under the cliff base in a section that had recently been exposed from to flooding that had been buried.
Aside from the fact that this canyon had been occupied at times probably dating back much further than a thousand years, try thousands of years, something else began to take shape. Not simply a story of ancient life and the observations of the image makers but a story of conflict. I continually encountered images (I believed) depicting humans holding severed human heads and I even came across a set of images that might even depict animal sacrifice. It is known that this culture entered a dark period before it simply abandoned places such as this canyon. Did these canyon walls document that period? It seems we may never know.
Please join me as I spend 24 hours in this fascinating place discovering what once was...

Visitation to sites such as this should be done with the utmost respect. The artwork is not simply graffiti, it is a window into the past and it is culturally significant. Please take great care when visiting and observing these places.

Amazing abundance of intense rock art. I agree with your observations of conflict, violence, and scary head hunters. The ebb and flow of native peoples thru this canyon is really exemplified by the diversity of the paintings, but the jewel in the crown was your discovery of the absolutely ancient and very simple petroglyphs in that recess! Those were so ancient that they reflected a simple hunting scene without the boogey men. That made this journey quite unique!! Thank you for part three!

That was really wonderful to see. Thank you! Don’t go walking on any ledges it’s not worth it. I broke my leg in 2023 and it is expensive, painful and a long recuperation to recover. Plus in the remote canyons it would put others at risk who come to rescue you. Take Care in that beautiful area!

Watched this series 3x. Saw something new every time. From the air it looks like a ceremonial or trading center. Just so much in one place. The gentleman exposing himself has headdress that looks Mesoamerican. Chacmool style. Just an opinion. Great content!

Very cool series! Some great glyph panels for sure.
Some may be late archaic or early basketmaker for sure as well.
Those “heads” may be of a ritual significance, and not necessarily that they were dismembering folks. BUT, that is not unknown in the southwest. Quit a lot of war or ritual dismemberment evidence was found in the Roosevelt Lake area project in the 80-90’s, published by Holomann and Assoc.
several outhouses had arms and legs suspended from ceilings. It’s thought at times, there was pressures and conflict just as today.
Those ones you found in the the “cave”, may not be super old, as it’s obvious there’s been many floods in that canyon and the floor may have been much lower at some point.
I worked on a petroglyph project where a boulder was 70% buried from flooding over the centuries.
All in all, you got a great group of images. Wish I was there too lol!

There was a great conflict here. I'm pretty sure the damage comes from the 1800's. In 1863 the "Relocation Act " gave $5 a scalp for a Native scalp. Up from the 25 cents offered before that. The Calvary and Texas Rangers were hired to exterminate Native People. That was their job. Native People didn't have to live high on the cliffs before that. Their homes were along the riverbanks with fertile land. The Generals sent Natives to Sector 37, without ever seeing it first. The Generals didn't realize how extreme the conditions were in that sector (I think they knew and didn't care). Thank You for taking us along 😀. The Calvary was sent to destroy the Native People from existence! They tried to cover it up by scratching out and erasing the petroglyphs, but they were harder to erase than they thought. The Calvary used dynamite and high-pressure water cannons to try to erase the evidence. Thousands of years of history lives in those canyons in pictures. Every line means something.

The scratching out of names goes all over the world that's what you do to your enemies when you beat them. Which proves my theory these people had enemies they lived in remote locations because they were hiding. You don't live in a remote Canyon up a wall hard to get to risking your own life and your loved ones every day for no reason. Like you said in your last video going up further would be colder or hotter depending on the time of year no benefit to it at all. Except defense. I've seen all these other places where they have 90° open 70° openings that's for shooting arrows out of. 100 I was into Forts and stuff like that castles etcetera at fascinated me as a Young Man. Love this stuff though bro I'm just trying to add to the conversation. Thank you for your work thoroughly enjoy it keep it up🎉🎉

This is like true archeology this is awesome🎉 you going out there finding these things that probably no one has ever seen or photographed and documenting them for others to see isn't that archeology? If it isn't it is in my mind. Every time I watch this I can't stop watching and it's like my eyes are glued to it because it's all brand new to me. I'm into the ancient alien Theory. I wonder if some of these are the ant people.

Another awesome video. It would be so interesting to see if there were more glyphs under the dirt that little buried alcove at 14:00. Would that be illegal or wrong to carefully dig some of that dirt out to check that out? Just curious. 👍🏻

I'm not sure where I heard it years ago, but I've been led to believe that concentric circles/spirals are indicative of a water source. Knowing this canyon quite well myself, the lack of those symbols would correspond with the arid nature of the canyon, which is certainly evident in its current state. I certainly can't attest to any water sources thousands of years ago, but I'm guessing it was a similar situation back then too. Obviously, MUCH further down the canyon, there's ample water, but I've hoofed it from the usual entry point to a bit further than you dropped in and didn't find any evidence of any consistent water sources. Wherever I've seen the spirals/concentric circles, I've always seen running water, so I've just attributed it to water ever since I heard that interpretation. Great adventure as always, dude! Gonna have to do something similar there, myself in the future. I'd like to get another 5-10 miles down the canyon and see what other amazing surprises are further down.
Also, with you having seen clear evidence of multiple groups over different timeframes, I'm curious if this canyon was somewhat of a stronghold to ward off invading groups too. Definitely appears that way with some of the imagery. Next time I go, I'll definitely be keeping your observations in the back of my head to see what else I can correlate through my own lens. I definitely think you're onto something with this canyon having seen some barbarism over multiple generations.

If you have chance should read "The Haunted Mesa" by Louis L'amour.
I think back then people were fearing something or other group of people, lots of violence no peace. Idk i could be wrong.

The figures with the heads are pretty interesting!!! But my favorite is the massive red figure with the feet hanging down. Maybe more than one bird? It just has the feel of birds - big, powerful birds!! The legs even have feathers like eagle legs.
I wonder if some of the "newer" painting in the multi aged panels isn't meant to re-emphasize some of the older figures which are glyphs they thought were important.
I'd be curious to know what others think.

You're probably in a area where combatants use to do their duels.
    And the victors would paint.
    Or witnesses to the event.

If you look carefully at the Green Man at 11:34, you can see that he has a beautiful serpentine figure on the front of his tunic. It's a pity that some fool shot him in the nose, but you can see the faint outline of his mouth. I'm with you on the couple at 20:28. These two warriors are illustrated all over the southwest, and are very different from the native people.

Since there seems to be many examples of figures holding heads, could the artwork be done with blood after the decapitation? The red color seems to be predominant and consistent in shade.

  • @jerkhardly4993
    @jerkhardly4993 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

All the pictograms and petroglyphs that were applied during the same period with the same materials tell a story. Probably a story and warning about whatever happened in this canyon. There’s clearly multiple occupations.

I’ve explored the four corners with effort since 2011. I’ve NEVER seen anything like what you’ve shared over the last three videos. That canyon needs some serious attention from the appropriate archeological society or preservation group. Or even a proper study through a university .
