Very nice video! My brothers and I bought the boardgame i think maybe 20years ago? Along with Brood Wars. Funny thing was, weve never played it even once due to the (presumed) complexity of the rules despite spending quite alot of money for the games. Fast forward years later. I piqued my 6year old son's interest by recalling the computer games I played. I searched the boardgame at my parents, brought it back to my place, read the rule book and tried out a game with my son. He beat me in a 1v1, him playing Protoss and me Acturus Terrans. And were very keen to play more games. What I found amazing was how quick he was to grasp the concept of the game and the tension of piling up the orders certainly was exciting to him. Sure there were a few mistakes on how we played but I guess thats how it goes with trying out a boradgame the first time. Im gonna have that rematch soon. First time played we only got as far as firebats and dragoons. Perhaps this time we'll go for carriers and battlecruisers. Now I gotta look for that copy of Brood Wars. I think its at my brother's. Perhaps I can entice them to have a galaxy wide war at home...
Wow, thanks for sharing!!! That is a bright 6 year old to pick and understand the game! This game really did a good job of capturing the feel of the different factions from the video game. And that staking of orders is really really cool. I wish more games used that mechanic.
And he won again! With Aldaris special victory. The build up and back and forth battles are cool too. He reavered my zerg hordes including an ultralisk in a surprise attack I didnt expect!
Purchasing Star Craft the board game was one of the best decisions I made in the hobby Fun fact: I believe it is technically the first deck building games out there.
Starcraft was oneof my first ever PC games! When my brother and I got our first PC, the son of a colleague of our father's set it up for us (he had done so with my parent's PC as well). While he was setting up the PC, at some point he got out one of those portable CD albums, and showed us (illegal copies) of lots of games, before installing them one after the other. We never figured out that we even could play online or how to do it, until much later, but I loved the single player of SC to bits. When SC2 came out, I was all over it with friends at uni. We even went to Gamescom and waited for hours to play the preview of the first expansion. This board game looks right up my alley, not just because of the theme, but the mechanics as well!
Starcraft was my introduction to an RTS and I feel in love with the genre. I have so many great memories of that game and even know will listen to the soundtrack. Thanks for the comment!
It's a great game and holds up today. Don't let the big rulebook intimidate you, it's a typical FFG bloated rulebook that's a lot longer than it actually needs to be.
Exactly, paid my copy in mint condition (still unpunched tokens) in total (base plus exp) around 700 usd, and even that was a good deal on ebay. That was in 2021.
Great video! Also I think your comparisons of StarCraft & Forbidden Stars were really fair. I have both and I need to get StarCraft tabled more to truly make my call on my preferred version, but I do lean Forbidden Stars for now, but your explanation has me wanting to test out that preference again lol
Great video. I have the World of Warcraft board game and this Star Craft board game really appeals to me just for what comes in the box. I could spend many happy hours going through it. I loved that PC game back in the day.
Thanks for watching! Keep an eye out for it. You can get lucky and find it somewhere for a good deal. And yes, Starcraft made me love RTSs. I played so many back then
Indeed nice that there is someone who used to play it to tell about it because I've been hoping it was more mechanically like the RTS game, yet it is more reminding RISK with cards and a low amount of territories.
Yeah, I can see that. The upgrade progression is very much like the video game. But it is tough to capture that real RTS feel in a tabletop turn based game
@@RollDiceTakeNames Codex: Card Time Strategy really does give you the feeling of trying to put out units, selecting tech that counters your opponent, but it doesn't have the arena.

YOU HAVEN’T PLAYED THE BROOD WAR EXPANSION??? Trust me, it’s worth it. One of the best ever made. Adds faction specific abilities, rebalances things, and adds a lot of cool mechanics, tiles, cards, and techs. Honestly can’t imagine playing without it.

I just picked up a used StarCraft with Brood War ($450 shipped). Yes, these games are expensive but when you figure you can play them, enjoy them and then sell them back off for about the same money if you so choose, the cost is irrelevant. My son (13) and I have been playing the fire out of it and loving it. I introduced him to the PC game about 4 years ago so he’s familiar with it. The remastered version is great!
Forbidden Stars. I listened to your two podcasts on the game. You guys should make an entire video about it because it's a masterpiece, and in my humble opinion, puts Starcraft to shame, mainstrains and simplifies it, makes it much more fun and easy to learn, and the combat is PERFECT (although a little slower for other players watching, so not that perfect, but STILL, the best combat on ANY board game I have ever seen till today).
@@RollDiceTakeNames Yes, and people like to keep mentioning this, FFG lost it, yadayadayada, but even it being out of print, I still got the game last month for a reasanable price, and with an insert and unpunched tokens / dials, a almost-brand-new used copy that was never actually used. I got into board games late as I was focused on PC games during the era of SCBW. Only until FS came out was I really into board games so going backwards in time to find a mid 2000s out of print board game and its expansion was painful for the wallet. SC and it's rarer BW expansion were my first grail board games. Forbidden Stars is my #1 board game currently and it is an easier teach than SC+BW as the designs of board games got more elegant and streamlined in 2015 compared to 2007, but without losing any strategic complexity. I'm always interested in playing both titles any time I get together with friends and family for board games, though these two titles are more complex and lengthy than most would participate in. I've had 4 player FS games go for much longer than 2-3 hours.
a friend owned this game, we got it to the table maybe 3 times, part of the problem, was that, action tokens are placed in the reverse order. so your first placed token is used last and the last placed token is played first. sadly this is a game killer, people keep forgetting, that its in reverse order. more than a few times ppl went to attack others, and then were like, oh i thought i create units and then attack but i attack and i have no units, because of the mixed up turn order. its a good game but some times confusing. if you can get the expansion, brood war, i hear its really good.
