    Your math is off just a bit...10x12 wouldn't go to 8x10...have to remember that's 2" all the way around which means top bottom and both sides...if you take 2" off each edge it shrinks your capable area to 6x8 because you have to take a total of 4" off ...so 10" with 2" off each side comes 6" not 8" and the 12" length with 2" off both top and bottom comes down to just 8".

      Moreover, even NIJ 06 specs are about 3 inch, NOT 2 for rifle rounds. 2” only for pistol and ONLY for NIJ 06.
      Basically, we are talking about 20 % of whole plate area to be protective, while steel has almost 90 % protection area covered. So, talking about weight to performance ratio, ceramic and PE panels are MUCH MUCH worse than steel with some fragment catching coating. Say 5,5 pounds of weight for 20 % area protected vs 6,5 pound of steel for 90 % covered.

    Also be aware of manufacturers who tend to leave numbers out of their testing in regards to velocity of the ammo being tested. I used to build and test level 4 ceramic composite plates for our company. Much of our testing was done with military 30-06 armor peircing. We tested with other materials as well. shooting into steel was very dangerous , as the penetrating core woul fly all over the range. I built a 2 inch thick plywood box to contain the sample. Many penetrators went out the side of box. Also smacked in the face with peeled off jacket a few times,flies straight back the trajectory. Finally put a laser on the rifle to aim and triggered it remotely. Just not safe with peices of penetrater flying all over the range. The composites were less deadly to bystanders.

    Just as UHMWPE Lvl III struggles with M855 but seems to handle M193 okay, Steel Lvl III armor has the opposite problem and generally struggles with M193 while handling M855 (hence the need for III+ designation to indicate it handles both threats).
    Since both of these are commonly available rounds, IMO the III designation should be considered obsolete and the III+ used as baseline to prevent confusion, I can't imagine there ever being a reason to opt for just the level III.
    Would like to see a spall test with base coat only on a multi-curve plate because some are looking for a concealable setup and the thinner the better for use under light jacket or hoodie.
    Have you considered experimenting with perforated steel embedded within the outer layers of UHMWPE? This is technology used in some armored vehicles (CVR(T) uparmor package and Leopard 2) to add protection while dramatically reducing weight. The holes are sized and spaced such that a round cannot pass through without hitting an edge and experiencing high asymmetric forces that disrupts its path. After it starts to keyhole within the armor, even UHMWPE should be able to handle something like m855 traveling more sideways than forward, and the material also serves to support the steel, keep it in place, help hold it together, and catch any spalling or fragments. In essence, a build up coat that is armor itself. Lighter than steel, thinner than UHMWPE, cheaper than ceramic.

As with anything, practice, train, and get comfortable with your setup until it’s 2nd nature. I took a twelve gage shotgun round twelve feet away . It was one inch away from the edge.. one inch from the center of the impact on the plate and the level three took it but it! It did deform . At the same nite I'm still alive and it did hurt I did go to the hospital and I was bruised pretty bad. But in the same note.. it was extremely close it was a slug.. and it was a three plus. A 12 gage slug has alot of energy at that distance. I am amazed at how good it worked and how much it deformed.. having a trama pad is what kept the damage to a minimum!! I know steal is heaven.. but SOOOO WORTH YOUR LIFE! BELIEVE ME!
    AND I'm sure you all have heard the saying.. " it's better to have it. Then not" right!?! You never know what is being pointed at you until that moment you get hit.. I was hit through a window that was barely open. It was a lower edge shot..

    Sorry mate, a 10" x 12" plate with a 2" non-protective border around its perimeter does not equate to 8" x 10" of actual ballistic protection; the correct answer should have been 6" x 8" because there is a 2" non-protective border on both sides as well as at the top and bottom, which actually equals to a non-protective border 4 inches (2" + 2") width-wise and 4 inches (2" + 2") height-wise , hence the correct answer for the total ballistic protection area for a 10" x 12" plate is 6" x 8".

I'm a big guy and let's be honest, I'm not going anywhere fast regardless of what I'm wearing or not. Yalls upgraded steel plates aren't much heavier than the lvl 4 ceramics and ya got the bigger 11x14 for those of us with more height and chest than the average joe. Plus there is the 20 yr shelf life vs 5 years.. this is a shit hit the fan buy, I think steel plates are the way to go.

    • @AR500Armor
      @AR500Armor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We aim to inform due to the level of misinformation out there. Your buddies statement are somewhat a response to that misinformation.
      Ceramic is rarely needed for domestic use given its only advantage over steel is its ability to stop a wider range of AP rounds and explosive blast mitigation, both are threats we fortunately do not see in the US.
      You are also correct on the shelf life as this is something that is almost never considered to those who incorrectly assume ceramic and steel are "almost" the same price. You have to multiply the cost of the ceramic plate X4 per plate (so X8) to get the accurate cost comparison to steel.
      Not only that, ceramics are susceptible to rough handling while steel is not. Weight is another topic that is often misquoted. Ceramic and steel are in the same weight category, with light weight steel being far less expensive than lightweight ceramic.
      We agree with your assessment on SHTF preparation as this favors steel 100%. Thank you for the compliment and support, stay in the fight!

      @hunterkiller232134 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BuffRANGE Yes, many armor companies say "NIJ compliant" and that's misleading, intentionally so. However, nothing AR500 Armor makes is NIJ certified, despite them attempting to make you think it is or that an independent laboratory testing their armor to conditions requested by AR500 Armor is the same as an NIJ certification.
      The NIJ certification is not just a test of the armor's ability to stop bullets. It requires a scientifically representative sample size of plates to be exposed to temperature extremes and then shot under scientifically repeatable conditions. There is then inspection of the manufacturing processes of the armor and follow up testing of production plates. Failure of any stage results in immediate recall and potential revocation of NIJ status.
      All AR500 Armor has to do to say "independently tested to NIJ standards" is have a plate or two sent to a lab to be shot at by calibers listed under the relevant NIJ standard with no temperature extreme testing or follow up inspection or testing.

    Why don't you use a final layer of steel to prevent back face deformation and help stop M855 on ceramic and polyethylene bonded plates? I know it would be thicker but seems like an "unholy" trinity lol. You could rim the plate edge and first inch of the plate strike face circumference with thinner steel at a steep angle to help with edge shots. The thickness of the edge steel would have to be enough to let an armored penetrator pierce beyond the edge steel and be slowed by the layers of ceramic and poly and finally the back face steel. I know nothing but tanks use a lot of layers and steep angles to stop rounds so that's what I was thinking.

    So does y’all’s Level 4 have ceramic plates that run to the edge of the armor or not? I never heard you say what your armor did; rather, you just discussed the allowable size of an “edge” w/o ceramic plates being present.

      we haven't cracked the code for edge-to-edge protection on PE or Ceramics yet - no one in the industry has. Hopefully some day, when we do we'll definitely post an update!

      @@AR500Armor use reinforced rubber layers, the rubber will store the kinetic energy and force the PE to remain in place limiting the deformation, try it out👍

    The downside with steel level 3 is that m193 can penetrate it if fired out of a long enough barrel and at closer range.

      Unfortunately, yeah. But on the bright side, it's becoming hard to find ARs in 'A1' or 'A2 configs, everyone wants shorties.

    Good video. How are there dislikes. Haters. Nothing wrong with more information and research.
