Steve I just wanted to let you know what a valuable wealth of information you are providing to new hybrid owners like myself. I just got a Venza and some of the easiest things can take me hours to figure out. Keep up the good work.
My sister drives a hybrid. As a grease monkey I like to stay away fromt them. But it turns out her battery is dead. This is all very useful information. Thank you & Godbless
Hey Steve, I haul cars for living the exotic ones. This car you just described in your video I needed that video so badly. This dead vehicle I couldn’t get it moved of course cause the battery was dead, and I didn’t know how to jump it. Your video helped me just now tremendously! Thank you so very much!!
On the RAV4 there is a specific metal piece more towards the opposite side of the engine from the fuse box for the negative cable to be attached. It is better to keep the cables further apart to be sure you don't accidentally damage the computer in the car.
This is a brilliant video! Thank you so much for making it. You taught me some very important information about my new hybrid Corolla. I won't be carrying my old jumper cables with me any more. I'll just stick to carrying my battery pack jump starter.
Wow My camry had arrived from uae and we were able to discharge it at 1 am of the morning Had no idea of how to start the camry Luckily found this video on youtube and in one try got the car ok Thankyou
I wish I'd seen this sooner. I'm here because my Highlander Hybrid keeps not starting and it looks like the reason is that I helped a person stranded at the airport by jumping their car with mine. I'm guessing I ruined my 12V battery; of course the battery is also six years old so maybe it didn't have far to go anyway lol. Thanks for this helpful video!
Two key points to remember… if it’s a smart key car you have to have the remote right next to the start button when starting the car (not just anywhere in the car). Second, I’m pretty sure you have to wait for the engine to cycle before disconnecting the leads or the vehicles goes dead again. I usually press the accelerator to stimulate the engine to come on.
That trick with the key next to the start button only applies if the battery for the remote dies, not the 12 volt car battery. That's another video I need to do.
The car starts charging the 12V battery from the dc-dc converter connected to the main (high voltage) battery. It has nothing to do with the ice running or not. You can check that by monitoring the 12V at the cigarette lighter with a volt monitoring usb charger.
This happened to me after COVID and Lock Down you could not drive. My Toyota hybrid would not start getting a jump start did work but quickly died as the engine would switch off. after start I had to switch on the AC so the engine would keep running and then a good 7 mile journey fix the problem.
I have a friend that had a new Toyota hybrid. After a month, it wouldn’t start up. The only ones in town that knew what to do with it was the Jeep dealer! I was so surprised a new Toyota wouldn’t start.
Yes, this is important. So, what is the best advice where to connect negative? Keep in mind that boosters have short cables and negative can't be connected to the location described in the user manual.
Hi. Great video, thank you. I have a toyota yaris (2018), I'm in the UK, and I use my car very infrequently, so when I don't use my car for a few weeks the battery can die. Could you please offer any advice around this (for people who aren't driving their car regularly), and also give some advice around the use of a battery charger (as one of the call out engineers mentioned it would be a good idea to use one). Thanks in advance.
Literally jumped started my 2023 crown platinum and with a autowits and I got everything from hybrid system malfunction to low brake power to the ultrasonic parking sensor malfunction jump started it from the points also parking brake unavailable guess it’s going to the dealership in 3 hours but if it can’t be jumpstarted without tripping a whole bunch of lights, then it’s a car that’s not for me
Could you place the trickle charge here for storage? Prolly need to charge batter directly in back. Hopefully can pop the hatch window w/out leaving lights on?!
Question though, can you jump start a hybrid using a conventional car using those terminals? Or will that put the same as jumpstarting a conventional car using the hybrid terminals?
I'm curious about using portable jump-starting battery packs. Can they be effectively used to bring a hybrid vehicle to the 'Ready' state? Thanks for any insights!
I missed the Corolla hybrid as well. That’s what happens when you don’t have a script! lol You’re right that the Venza really is an awesome car. A sleeper in my opinion. I wish we could get more of them to sell
i face no such issues or inconvinences with my Hyundai Ioniq hybrid...i just press a recharge button inside my car after i manunally open the car door with a key and jump start the car...
Hi just bought a Toyota CHR GR . In the uk . The battery is in the boot . Would it be alright to jump it off from that battery. Should I ever need to jump it off Many thanks
@@tomgranton8754 you certainly can jump it straight to the battery but because the “boot” (trunk) has an electronic lock, you might not be able to access it. That’s why they added the post under the “bonnet” (hood).
can a conventional jump start a hybrid? are the jumper cables to charge a hybrid different from a conventional jumper cable since the positive terminal in the fuse box look different from a 12 volt battery?
@@TrainerSteveClifford Thanks for your reply. If you can get into the car, you can manually open the sliding door, and collapse the 3rd row seats and access the battery at the trunk, no need to open trunk door.
@@hexise yes… you could manually reach back and unlock the door, climb over the seats, move everything in your cargo area, pull the plastic cover and hook up your jump box or cables directly to the battery… or access the panel under the hood as demonstrated. lol
Ah... yes, there is not a huge amount of metal there but it is enough. Remember, all you're doing is waking up the computer. You're not turning a starter.

A lot of jump boxes have very shot cables, but cables running from another car can be spread

Steve, you da man!
Make sure you do not connect the black negative cable to the engine control module ( PCM).
Yes, this is important. So, what is the best advice where to connect negative? Keep in mind that boosters have short cables and negative can't be connected to the location described in the user manual.
You can ground the negative to the bolt that connects the relay box to the car. Just clip it on to the bolt securely.
@@peteg8920 tnx. AFAIK there are some painted bolts which aren't recommended for that. I have RAV4 and will check it, there is also wife's Yaris 🙂
@@kacnjeTry and find one that is not painted.
As always, Thank you.

Conventional can jump a hundred. Just can’t jump conventional with a hybrid. Yes, regular cables are fine
Why not directly jump start the battery at the back of the vehlcle? Is there a reason? Thanks.
On many cars, you can’t access the truck because it has an electronic latch

First generation Prius does not have this application
My memory of this is that it does have the jump point under the hood. I guess I could be wrong but it’s been a while
On my toyota hybrid chr icon I can see that positive part but I'm worried as this all looks plastic ?
You're talking about finding a ground? The bolts at the top of the suspension struts work in most cases.

Yes. You can use a gas car to jump a hybrid or another hybrid
