  • Here is the Westernmost parish in Lincolnshire, about 5 miles west of Epworth and ten miles Northwest of Gainsborough where the three ancient counties of Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire all meet. The old bed of the River Torne formed part of the North and Western parish boundary.
The parish church of St Pancras has a long and interesting history. Tradition has it that the church was burned down along with the rest of the village during the Black Death plague in 1348. The new village was built to the north, but the church was rebuilt in the same location as before. This is why the church is so far out of the main village to the South.
This village hall is much more than a standard village hall. In fact, it’s a multi award winning music venue. The Cross Keys pub was built in 1909. One of the rooms here displays posters from past performances of the village pantomime and it’s also home to a local football team.
John Wesley - the founder of Methodism - was Epworth born. The Wesleys had much to do with this place however. In 1726 Samuel Wesley, father of John Wesley became rector, occasionally living here. It’s interesting to note that the Wesleys are known to have described it and the surrounding area as "little better than a swamp”
It’s much more than that now. At one time maybe thanks to the marshes that once covered this part of Lincolnshire. Now it’s the very out-of-the-way settlement known as WROOT.

    WROOT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - Three Counties Farm has the very spot where all three county boundaries meet up, hence the name of the farm. That farm is still within the boundaries of Wroot parish.
    - Samuel Wesley (John's father) was the Rector of both Epworth and of Wroot. John spent two years as curate of Wroot as an Anglican priest. Samuel and his wife Susanna lived in the rectory in Wroot for a number of years while they rented out the Rectory in Epworth to help increase the family income.
    - Wroot's rectory is built on the site of the original rectory which burnt down years ago
    - What was Wroot's annual sports day is known as Wroot Feast. It goes on for a full week including various entertainments culminating in fancy dress parade on the last day. This also includes the choosing of Miss Wroot!

@@TheVillageIdiot thank you so much! I've just emailed you about another track. Shame about Haxey but hopefully you'll be busy until 2023 with videos anyway. It's such a nice resource archive of places.

Just been looking online about the church, it doesn't have a page on the Churches Trust site, so I assume it was not open to the public?

Samuel wesley, John's father was the Rector of both Epworth (St Andrew's Church) and of Wroot so they are a conjoined parish still. John spent 2 years as curate of Wroot as an Anglican priest, the church he was ordained into, and remained in for the entirety of his life. He served under his father as Rector in charge. Samuel and his wife Susanna lived in the rectory in Wroot for a number of years while they rented out the Rectory in Epworth to help increase the family income.

I'm liking that Catherine. Conjoined ecclesiastically one would assume you mean. Civilly they are two separate entities (hence why this has it's own video)

You could have saved time visiting the three counties by going to Three Counties Farm and finding the spot where all three county boundaries meet up, hence the name of the farm. That farm is still within the boundaries of Wroot parish.

      Private land though I'm guessing

In fact yes I've just checked. Ninescores Lane is the road the point is on and it is 100% a private road. Signs telling you so. Would've been nice to see, but unfortunately off limits
