simply remaining silent after being read your miranda rights is not enough. you need to verbally acknowledge that you do in fact understand that have the right to remain silent
@@Tohkie You still have the right to remain silent even if you don't verbally agree to it. You generally cannot be arrested simply for failure to respond to questions. If a person is in custody the police must read the Miranda rights if they want to ask questions and use the answers as evidence at trial. By not agreeing you're just making their job a little bit harder, which is probably what Jeff wanted.
@@roizyo Agreed. Cops need you to say you understand otherwise the interrogation could be inadmissible. But there's really nothing to be gained by talking to cops especially if you're guilty, but even if you're not. So say nothing, except I want a lawyer please and thankyou!

Literally not speaking has not foreclosed the possibility of cops continuing to interrogate you. “I do not wish to answer any questions” or “I choose to remain silent” or “I will not answer any questions without a lawyer” or simply “I want a lawyer” is how you clearly and effectively invoke your 5th amendment right against self-incrimination, i.e the right to remain silent
I love that the cop tries the whole "we have so much evidence just admit it already" and Jeff goes "like what?" and the cop just freezes like a deer in headlights.
Yep, I'm pretty sure a cop is going to start listing shit way before Jeff asked him 'like what?' He'd fish for a bit I'm sure but after pulling him out of a cell a few times and getting cuked for cokes, he'd lay something on Jeff to try and jar him.
it doesnt want to tell you what to be you can be like jeff or not you can be a heroin addict or not idk who are they to tell you they are showing the pros and cons
Nobody decides 'I'm gonna do heroin' casually. You have to be hurting so much that you'd rather be dead anyway. At that point you give up on reality, and you just spend the rest of it fading away until you're gone.
Cop: "I got sooooo much evidence." Jeff: "Like what?" Cop: **freezes up like an elementary school kid that can't manage a lie he made up on the spot.**
Imagine you’re Jeff just casually strolling through TH-cam and you see a video of you from years ago has 8 million views and you’re being studied like character in a movie
I can’t help but like this guy. Likely cause he’s wearing everything on his sleeve. He’s actually one of the most honest people I’ve ever seen in this scenario
So basically this is the street-smart guy. He knows how to deal with cops and is mature enough to not fall for their bluffs even though he has been a junkie for over 10 years
There's a reason for that actually. I mean he may just really like cokes but he's going through heroin withdrawal, the sugar in those cokes will be releasing some dopamine and help alleviate a small amount of the discomfort. Science
They just keep dragging guy outta the cell and giving him cokes. He drinks the coke, doesnt sign anything, then says "take me back to the cell". Fantastic.
Remember though that each time he gets out the cell for interview he is further into withdrawals. Heroin addiction makes you need lots of sugar (don’t ask me why, it’s a strong craving) the police are using (or hoping) to use his withdrawals to get him to crack. It’s like being in hell when you get nicked and got a habit. Jeff is actually a pro with these guys and they know it.
Frankly, Jeff ought to have sued the cops who kept interrogating him after he asked for a lawyer. After all, they performed a blatant violation of his rights.
Wouldn't work. The coos were doing their job. Whatever involvement Jeff may have had, it's clear that an armed robbery did occur. Interrogating suspects and going hard on prime suspects is oar of the course. Plus, Jeff himself went into the interrogation room to get cokes from the interrogators.
Yep but he left without his Butterfinger the cops didn't keep their word so they're branch of designers cops. I tell you one thing I keep my word all the time and I'm prom and I don't BS anybody I say imma do something I do it I say I'm going to buy something buy it. I said take him out for dinner I do it I don't flake out...
They likely got him to agree to return to an interrogation room in exchange for soda, or Jeff played them for free snacks. In theory they can keep asking questions but anything said after requesting a lawyer is not admissible as evidence. That's why they had to keep telling him his rights again and again to restart the interrogation
Jeff was the smartest man in that room that day. You never, ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever, talk to the police. They are allowed to, and often do, lie to you. Even if you are 100% innocent, you will tell them something that they can turn against you.

Jeff is likeable because he genuinely comes across like he knows whats what. hes not trying to be manipulative or to seem like a victim. Hes standing up for himself while remaining polite and amicable. All while going through withdrawal.
That and people inherently dislike when they see people in authority try to trick or manipulate people. I think most people have a pretty strong negative reaction when they see actual police interrogations. We have an idea of how these things should go and watching multiple guys come in and straight up lie to a guy that they have had chained up for hours doesn't sit well with us. The guy asked for a lawyer hours ago and they are still playing musical cops with him just hoping to break him down and get a confession.
@@dash4800 exactly. You see other folk who are guilty doing the whole poor-me act or trying to act crazy or like theyre some sort of dangerous supervillain bollocks... and the police are all pussyfooted around them. But Jeff is actually co-operating within his rights and they just use that as an oppertunity to dog-pile onto him.
@@kartikeyatiwari2502 i disagree. Even in cases where we strongly suspect that the person is guilty we tend to dislike the way interrogations are run. Like I said above, we want our cops to be honest and straight forward. Its just like when we see traffic stop videos. We know the guy was likely speeding or something, but we also know that the cop wants to try to find something else to stack on top of it. So when we see a traffic stop where the cop starts lying to the driver about his rights or tries to manipulate him to incriminate himself we get irritated and insist that he refuse to answer questions. Cops are trained to manipulate people. And most people aren't prepared to deal with it. So when we see someone who can call them out, guilty or not, they instantly become likeable.

@@oscara8454 I feel you and agree, but to be fair attorneys on both sides of a case will tell you confessions are the best "evidence" they can obtain. All other things like witnesses and evidence can be explained away by good lawyers(or even just cast reasonable doubts) but a good confession usually trumps everything else. With jurors they might not always understand fully facts of cases evidence this and that however when the person accused of the crime says they did it that sticks with them. Regardless of the actual innocence or guilt of the person. So many people have went down over "confessions" that did them in it's crazy, my brother did time when 1 of his co-defendants snitched and even with video and witness/victim statement the detective admitted they would've gotten away with it if not for dude talking. It's crazy people always talk about the conviction rates of state and especially feds but seriously if people just pulled a Jeff and STFU the rate would be so much lower. They don't realize plea agreements count because you are admitting to get a "good deal" but stfu and so many people would be free even with all the evidence against them.
Some of the police officer's body language (the little I notice): 6:24 - Notice his scratching of his chin as he says, "talk to you about what happened last night". He is clearly nervous. He knows they don't have a case. No doubt Jeff (most likely subconsciously) picks this up. 6:44 - After saying, "I think it's in your best interest to (talk to the police)" he starts sitting restless in his chair, moves forth and back, moving things about pointlessly. Again, nervous, unable to find a good resting position, not at ease, not calm.
@User name 1234 They can only detain someone for so long without adequate evidence. Apparently, they arrested him on suspicion and had no evidence, unless they can trick him.

simply remaining silent after being read your miranda rights is not enough. you need to verbally acknowledge that you do in fact understand that have the right to remain silent

@@roizyo he’s already been arrested. He won’t get charged additionally for refusing to answer questions, if that’s what you mean. Dea is right in that “the right to remain silent” is a term of art. “I do not wish to answer any questions” or “I choose to remain silent” or “I will not answer any questions without a lawyer” or simply “I want a lawyer” is how you clearly and effectively invoke your 5th amendment right against self-incrimination, i.e the right to remain silent

Jeff is likeable since we don't know if the charges are valid or not. If it was proven that he actually did it then he won't be so likeable anymore

6:24 - Notice his scratching of his chin as he says, "talk to you about what happened last night".
