It's so strange how a song called "Perfect Day" is one that I find myself wanting to listen to when my day is everything but perfect.
False hope. The emotional and mental maggot.
exactly
what other kind of hope is there???
Omg same
Its about a perfect day of doin heroin in central park in NYC
My wife and I danced to this at our wedding reception. The greatest day of my life and an appropriate song for the occasion. At the time I was in the Army and was a severe alcoholic. The lyrics at the end was the cherry on top because she was fully aware of what she was willing to get into.
I’ll never forget hearing her cry over the phone a couple years after we got married when I told her my chain of command signed off for me to get help at a rehabilitation center in Oregon. I got off of heroin through the same means to be able to join the Army so she was aware that I had already gone through a withdrawal process. 7 years clean of heroin, 3 years sober of alcohol. Thank you so much my dear Hannah for taking a chance with me. Thank you so much Lou for all of your work I’ve listened to ever since my father raised me with your art.
We now have two beautiful children, I was able to successfully transition back into civilian life, and the future looks quite promising. Some folks can’t comprehend the power of art and music, but it’s a power that can’t possibly be denied.
Congratulations on your recovery! Keep going strong :)
RIGHT ON MY DUDE!! you're the fucking man!! congrats!
Great story you give us all hope for that we can get thru any dramas! God bless you and your family!
Semper Fi my good man! God bless your family and friends!

I used to play this song as the heroin hit, every relapse, after relapse. It's the sixth year anniversary of me getting sober today. Still love this song, it just means something very different now.

"You made me forget myself. I thought I was someone else, someone good" might be the most relatable lyric in history.

Lou was a deeply flawed man. His music was honest, simple, and intimate. That’s what makes him so relatable.
So true, he had problems but in a way in the time period he was living he was facing them head on through his art.

Reed's voice breaking on 2:11 is one of things which makes this song excellent.
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix

It's the imperfections that make it so perfect.
@@ZoeKaylor So true
Reed wrote a song so powerful that when it's in personal context you can't help but cry
This is what having fun with depression is like.
Exactly, bro.
So true, the teen days
this is what having fun with skagg is like..
Having fun with depression - and David Bowie and ‘Ronno’ otherwise it would just be another unfinished chess game against that one friend who never just never shows up on time or ever.
Yeah, funny depression
I can't explain the nightmare I just went through searching for this song, the sense of relief I am feeling having found it, but I will try. I thought I was going fucking nuts. When all you can remember from this song is, "You just keep me hangin on," which only returns results for "You Keep Me Hangin On", a completely different song from the 1960s, and not at all what you're looking for. "Okay," you think, "I'll give it a listen and see if the song I'm looking for is some sort of modern cover." Fuckin' nope, not even close. You look through three pages of results, none of which have this song, and you honestly have no idea what you can do to refine a search for the only six words you remember from a song. At this point you begin to question your own sanity, is the song real at all? Did I get the words wrong in some small way that means I may never figure out what song I'm actually looking for? Am I doomed to be nervous and angry until by chance I suddenly figure out what song I've been looking for? You just want to break things, because in no way should it be this difficult to find a catchy song on the *internet!* WHERE IS IT?! Is there some kind of grand conspiracy to keep you from finding this song? Make you doubt your own mental faculties until you are left a dribbling, emotionally ruined shell of your former self?
If you don't figure out what song this is, you aren't eating, you aren't going to bed, you aren't doing anything because now it's personal. *You* can't find this song, and if you can't find it that means you are wrong, and you know you aren't wrong. It's a horrifying paradox, you cannot give up or else every day that you live having not found that song will be a day lived in agony at the knowledge that you can never prove what you know to be real. Why even continue living?
Anyway, I finally found it, by chance after a couple days. The real struggle is figuring out how I'm going to dispose of these bodies.
+FultonLMiller that was intense mate.. rather start watching some amazing movies .. like this song is in the movie trainspotting ..! Great movies have great soundtracks!

When I was in active heroin addiction I truly understood the bittersweet feel of this song. Longing for the high and longing to be clean at the same time. Clean today I still love it.

I should not be seeing this comment when I'm drunk.
The great Mick Ronson played the piano and did all the arrangements of this song which is one of the greats of all time
Mick was behind my favorite albums in rock history.
Ronno the hidden gem in rock
@barneyhansford411 Ronno composed, arranged (orchestrated), and conducted all of the piano and string parts, as well as playing that entire, lovely, and melancholic piano masterpiece that frames the entire song… Bowie only wrote most of the the lyrics and outlined some basic chords that Ronson filled in… not only with the full layout of the song, but he wrote the sheet music as well, which includes arranging all of the individual instruments, with their separate compositions within the song…
Ronno also knew how to arrange the placement of all the different instruments in the studio for the proper balance of sound since he was a professionally trained musician, composer, and instrumental arranger (he also played the violin and mandolin). Ronno contributed to the lyrics as well according to Angie B!! Mick also did this to most of the other songs on the album, and only for a few bucks… thinking he was doing a favor for a friend and would be looked after and treated as an equal… but Bowie knew how to take advantage of him (just like he did to the Spiders…)
Ronno also engineered most of the entire album (and parts of others), yet his name doesn’t show up on one credit since Bowie claimed them all for his own greedy narcissistic self!! Ronno gave Bowie his image during the Spiders from Mars period!! So without Mick Ronson David Bowie wouldn’t have received all the the attention and accolades he got… which were mostly due to Ronno… who (along with the other Spiders) was unceremoniously fired like a day labourer!!
The D.A. Pennebaker movie shows everything Ronno did to encourage Bowie, and Bowie always played with him side by side as equal frontmen, when Ronno was the whole package behind the scenes!! Sometimes when I hear this song it angers me that Ronno didn’t get the credits, royalties, and the professional respect he deserved from Bowie. So whenever I hear this song (especially in Trainspotting) I think of Mick Ronson as the real mastermind behind the scenes!! (Brian Eno would never let Bowie take advantage of him, especially in such a disrespectful way)!!
Bowie was just a leach!! He didn’t even visit his ‘friend’ and former partner when he was dying of cancer and begging friends for small jobs to keep a roof over his family’s head!! It’s a shame he was so disrespected by Bowie, as Ronno should’ve been one of the great composers and arrangers like John Williams, John Barry, Michael Kamen, etc. But Bowie deliberately held Ronno back and also wouldn’t let other people in his organization tell Ronno how much of an asset he was and what he really deserved and the position he held in creating David Bowie’s image and career!!
The documentary “Beside Bowie” brings everything into the light, only it wasn’t made until after Mick had passed away (Ian Hunter was there helping to take care of his mate and make sure he had an income)! David Bowie didn’t even attend Ronno’s funeral, nor contribute a single penny to support Mick’s family and the monument they felt he deserved as recognition for his musical contributions that brought an element of fame to the small eastern seaside town of Kingston upon Hull in the County of Yorkshire in Northern England!
Produced by David Bowie
Lou Reed - vocals
Mick Ronson - piano, string arrangements
David Bowie - keyboards
Trevor Bolder: trumpet
Herbie Flowers: tuba
Klaus Voormann - bass
John Halsey - drums
Lyndal god bless Bowie
Good points!
Ronson's piano is so strong, it completely lifts the song above and beyond. Ronson was recognised as a very talented arranger too. But you can't pull Bowie out of the equation. Reed, Ronson, Bolder all had more prominent careers because of their association with Bowie. As for the money, we all know that many 70s musicians were done down by their managers and this was the experience of Bowie, Ronson and Bolder with Tony Defries. Bowie ended up very wealthy due to his decision to manage himself and later through the creation of the Bowie bonds which allowed him to buy back his own back catalogue.
I don't have anything to add, but this discussion is fantastic!
Do you know who wrote the lyrics?
This song perfectly describes how I feel about this song

Personally, this is an example of the pure power and magic of music. When a song causes a physical reaction in your body! This is such a clever song.
From the lyrics describing a mediocre life that's not too downtrodden but subtlety sad. Firmly hammered in by the chorus. Not only by instruments but by a slight voice break indicating a hidden struggle.
Perfection.
It is indeed a clever song that combines a bright, upbeat melody with melancholic lyrics. The juxtaposition creates a unique and compelling listening experience, and the slightly strained vocals in the chorus do add to the emotional impact of the song. It's a great example of how music can communicate complex emotions and experiences in a way that words alone cannot.

@@nneisler doesn't sound to bright and upbeat to me.
@@johnhatchel9681no, its a poem that reed wrote to his gf
Probably the most laid back, and yet somewhat similarly, dramatic song; anybody composed.
Thanks Lou.
RIP mate.
🇬🇧 🤝 🇺🇸
You're right, it is dramatic. It's like giving in to an emotion as deep and uncontrollable as rage., except inverted into a jaded sadness.
that piano solo after you just keep hanging on
Clint Francis Barton played by David Bowie
Bowie okayed the keyboard... The Piano is ALL Mick Ronson. Musical savant...
a combination of my love for the Velvet Underground and mood swings brought me here.
It’s so kind of Mika to sing this for us 😊
Are you a fellow vod watcher that had to investigate?
@@werwer_yt feasibly
Holy shit Mika CAN sing 😮

So many people view this song ironically, but with how gorgeous it is, even when I listen to it on a bad day, it feels like a perfect day
After many love dissapointments, every time I go out and spend a saturday or sunday with my daughters, I finish my day at my appartment listening to this song. And then, I find that life gets so well when the definitive and beloved ones are happy with you by just sharing simple things and you can forget everything when it's spent with them. A day with my daughters is a perfect day.
The piano solo is so simple yet so beautiful, just pure art.😥😩☺
I am listening to this song in honor of My good friends mother who passed away last night via overdose, Rest easy Gina theres no more pain for you on this earth.
Sorry for your loss and friends loss id be lost w-o mama and im 35 .
Lou Reed’s Vocals along with Guitarist Mick Ronson’s Piano & Strings on Perfect Day are Perfect
I think that Mick Ronson is one of the best guitarists and even pianoplayers in the world, but truly underrated
Spettacolo...
Senza parole.

I heard this song the first time at a movie theater in Berkley CA in 1996 watching Trainspotting with friends. I had quit smoking about 8 months prior. The movie itself was great, but this song had such a profound effect on me, and the very strange place I was in my life at that time that I left the theater, abandoned my companions (including my girlfriend at the time) and went to a nearby liquor store to purchase a pack of Camels. I starting smoking again that day and didn't quit for 10 more years. "Perfect Day" is such an incredible song. It is this beautiful song that Lou Reed is adamant that he wrote for his high school sweetheart and muse, Shelley. I have never been so deeply moved by a song before or since. I am unable to contemplate how one song can make me so incredibly happy and be the absolute perfect illustration of profound sadness at the same time. RIP Lou Reed and thank you for all of your incredible music.
Always seem to play this song at the end of the day when I feel sad and long for my youth and all my friends who are all dead and gone. Even though I never wanted to be thirty, I somehow always thought I would indeed have all my friends with me when I got older. I will be 66 next month and it is just me and my cat. But 30 years off heroin/coke/benzos/barbiturates/booze. Got this album in '74. Thank you Lou for being on the planet with me.
"would you like a starter? Some garlic bread perhaps?
"No thank you I'll proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs please"
What a great film. I personally quit doing opioids but trainspotting is still among my favorite films.
Without context its just a strange movie, with context it is an amazing film.
@@zbear5920 yeah lol on some pirates of the Caribbean shit lol
Wow...you are a peon
I apologize for what I said before I was lost in the song and did not read this in full. High five to you for kicking the monkey. I have as well. I shouldn't read these comments I get far too upset. #FUCKHEROIN
Perhaps sir would like for me to call a taxi?
Mick Ronson rules. His piano, his orchestrations.
Perfect
This is one of the best songs ever
- Have you taken a break since you started drinking?
- Not until right now.
- Do you feel like lying on the couch, rubbing your eyes, while listening to Lou Reed’s Perfect Day?
- Yes!
- Then I’ll tell you what’s wrong with you, you got a hangover
Family Guy
Yeah I just saw that and realized I had no idea what Peter was talking about so I thought I'd check this song out.
D. Ball LMAO.
I'm very sleep deprived tonight and I was watching Season 16 of Family Guy on Netflix today. When Peter mentioned this song I HAD to hear it.
I was laughing so hard at the next scene, his sunburn, that I had to pause it because my stomach muscles hurt and I was practically crying..LOL
That episode also taught me about Chris O'Donell who apparently I look like
D Bail Literally why I’m listening to this
It has gradually grown on me. ❤
"hanging on
By a thread
Hanging on
Shouldn't let go
If I let go
All will fall
Fingers bleeding
Down to the bone now
Can't let go
Nothing makes sense
Hold on
Hold on
Hold on"
NOOOOOOO
Shut up I can't take this
Too soon 😭
I just re watched ofmd and I cried even more this time it was so much worse knowing what was going to happen
Always reminds me of Trainspotting when he ODs and just sinks away into the carpet

My ex-fiancè just mailed this song with lyrics adjusted to our shared memories, together with link to this clip, as a wish to my name's day. I broke with her 3 years ago. She is in new relationship and I live my solo life, with my daily routine, at its finest.
Our worlds splited apart, bad things are gone, but there are still those beautiful memories that keeps a kind of best friends connection alive. The perfect day could mean so many things.
Tears come to my eyes when I listen to this song reminds me of my days with my son who used to be around me
He’s with you in your heart. You’re amazing
