This is my favorite symphony by him. I find it similar to the Poulenc's Organ concerto in some fragments. I like the dark atmosphere this work displays. Just fascinating!

Disturbing in its' intensity, this symphony flows with an inexorable, fatalistic motion to a tragic conclusion. This feeling of desolation was something that Panufnik was a master at depicting in his music; it's not an experience I can enjoy in the usual sense, but I can appreciate its' significance. I'm acquainted with most of his symphonies; this is the first time I've heard this one. The "Sinfonia Sacra" remains my favorite, it's a more hopeful work, and easier to listen to.

The sixth ( mystic) is very beautiful, and depicts serenity in its slower sections.

At times quite powerful, but unthinkable without the clear precedent of Poulenc's organ concerto. And here Panufnik (as in too much of his late 1970s/eaerly 1980s work) lapses into preoccupations with formulaic excesses at the expense of a cogent musical discourse. At least with No.8 there is more admirable conciseness!
