  • In this video I'm showing you the process that's needed to repair a power sliding
    door on a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. This repair covers quite a few years such as 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006, it also covers quite a few different models of minivans such as the Town and Country and the standard caravan. This repair is for when you have symptoms of the door on the side of the van passenger door that is only opening a few inches when you push your key fob to open the door or when you push the designated button on the overhead console inside the van. Although your power motor for the door may have quit working it's more likely that the wiring going to the motor under the running board for the rear passengers has broken and the wiring needs repaired. This is an easy simple repair and can be done with very limited tools and experience I will try to show you step by step what's needed so you can get your power sliding door to work the way it use to.
    Thanks for watching!

    Man, you rock! I've been without a power slider for almost two years, thinking it was the motor being burnt out. Then when the other one didn't work, I figured $400 for parts and self repair. I saw your video and had both fixed within an hour. Great video, great instructions. The wife is thrilled and I'm gettin' lucky tonight! ;-)

    Awesome, thanks muchly my dude. I just scored a 2005 SXT at 130k mi for $400 from a coworker. Only problems are no AC, right pass door won't power open/close, and pass locks won't power lock. Oh, and the brakes are shot. Easy fixes. Beautiful car. Gonna squeeze as many miles out of that $400 as I can, hahah

    Thank you. You were right on with the fix. One wire was split completely close to the clip and pin connector for the track. God bless. Easy fix cost me nothing but some grease on my fingers. But remember to unhook battery the wires are live!

    I just bought a 2006 SXT for $800.00 with 108k miles.. It's mint. They just got tired of stuff not working and sold it. The doors were one of them.. Now I know whats going on. As I can hear the motors. The doors just don't open.. They also thought the rod bearing were failing. As you could hear a ticking..It was a broken spark plug wire at the coil...
    Sadly. I got to buy a new Cat.. Someone stole it...Another $200.00 for that...But I'm going keep it. It's that clean...

    I enjoyed your straight forward video as my issue was exactly as yours, a clean break in the same spot. Thank you. I found it interesting that this repair also solved the "power window in the sliding door doesn't work" complaint. So, if your power door and power window aren't working, this would be a great place to look. My daughter was quoted a worst case scenario of $1,600.00 to repair these two issues and I was able to do it for free in about 20 minutes.

    I have repaired both sides of my 2004 Grand Caravan. the repair has lasted longer than the original.
    Also to all Automatic door owners. When the door is opened or closed manually there is a magnetic disc in the Power door moror that "disengages" the motor so that the door moves freely. I have found over time that the disc will keep the motor magnetically engaged and make the door difficult to move manually (feels like you are working against the stagnant motor). When I disassemble the motor and clean the disc it the manual operation works easy and "free". But this is often short-lived. Is there another way to clean the disc to have to keep for sticking over time.

    Wow! your video on this power sliding door fix was the best ever. For about a year I have been looking at videos every so often to "do it myself". I am a 62 year old woman on my own. SO once I found your video I went out and bought a butt thingamajig and some electrical wire. I put a patio chair next to my passenger side door and after refreshing my memory by watching your video a few times I just jumped in and fixed it! One wire was severed. I tried the but clamp first but like you mentioned, it prevented the door from closing - so I was prepared because you addressed this. So I took it off and just wound the wires around each other and wrapped the tape around as tight as I could. I used to have a sauldering gun - but no more. So viola! It works. THANK YOU. Oh, also once I touched the 2 wire ends together I heard the slight sound of a beeping so I knew right away it was going to work.

    It's a nice video, but that type of repair fails very rapidly on these doors. To make a fix that lasts the whole segment of wire that flexes must to be replaced.
    The problem is the cable design forces it to flex from straight through a 1 1/4 inch radius U bend and back to straight down the whole length of the wire every time the door opens and closes. A rigid soldered repair with stiff heat shrink tubing transfers the curl not happening at the repair into a much sharp bend at each end of the heat shrink.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oliver Street I agree, half those making this repair are just wanting it to work for another couple years. In my case that repair lasted four years. And, I advised my parents that they buy the wiring harness that's needed to replace all that. And, like most they said it wasn't worth it. So basically the repairs for the type of people that just want to get by for very little money. And honestly those vans in the Northeast are nothing but Swiss cheese by time the repair fails again.👍😁

    I would like to share a suggestion on fixing sliding door that won't work, First thing before going to the most common thing which is to go to the wires for inspection, try this first, Open your sliding door and spray some cleaner inside the lock mechanism give it a healthy dose wait a while then try your door, if your door then works and it will for a short time, then you should take the locking part at the rear of the door out, you'll see the three torx head screws for removal, you'll have to take the inside moldings and black covering to get to the inside door stuff then pull the lock mechanism out and give it a good cleaning this worked for my 2003 Town and Country , I previously did all the wire stuff didn't find anything wrong, then pulled the motor from the good side and checked bad side motor but motor was good I went through a lot, This simple thing made my door work repeatedly so i could finally put everything back together, also I did remove the rear seats since i didn't have the stow & go in my 2003 T&C, I wish it was just a wire, much less a hassle! Hope this helps! As always God Bless and keep the tires on the road!

    Hi, cery informative video,
    I have toyota estima 2007, mine is just the door handle, with the key it does the same like yours and locks back, but when i pull and hold the handle it does work. Which clearly shows theres no wiring or electric problem.
    Normally to open or close the door just pull the handle n release it does the work. But here i have to pull n hold untill it opens a little and all normal. Same with closing, pull and hold.
    Any ideas?

  • @martinstuetzer4478
    @martinstuetzer4478 ปีที่แล้ว

    A fix like that will be temorary until you replace all of the wire that is in the area where it flex's. So if you make a repair inside the chain-like conduit, it stiffens the wire in the area where it will be required to flex near 180 degrees, and it will surely break again. replace the wire with the same gauge well outside of the conduit range will ensure that wire lives another lifetime. Great video though! You were clear and concise. Well done!

    My switches on the side of the doors don't operate, but the others do. I tried jumping them to no avail. Not sure if the 2 wires to each switch is positive or negative? One switch went out 6 months before the other. I dont know if they have a separate fuse from the front switches or if they share commonality through the snake at the bottom door track. If the ladder than surely they could not have broken there. Dunno really. Any ideas, also if I can test the switch by jumping positive to it or our they a ground switch. Thanks. Edit, so I just figured out at least about the switch is one ground in one out. Apparently I got ground to it, but out the ground is broken somewhere. Probably in the door track snake that follows the door as it slides. Cool

    Thanks a lot for posting this repair. I had the same problem with my 2007 Chrysler T&C and followed the procedure and worked like a charm, I actually found a wire that was broken in 3 different points, I guess only one of them was bad enough to loose connectivity when the cable harness bent at that specific point. That might also explain why mine opened a little bit more than the one Foxboss9 shows in the video.

    Finally a "mechanic's" video with substance and clarity. Nice to watch a video without all the shaking and random out of scene shots. Thanks. Need howto remove front swing doors interior panels so can fix untracked power windows.

    Unfortunately, I followed all of your steps and I couldn't find any obvious breaks like the one in the video. Any ideas on how to deal with that?

      I am sorry, I do not have an answer for you on that one.. I found the break on this one and then heard from a Chrysler mechanic that a lot of the vans had the same problem.. Sounds as if you got something else going on...Good Luck!!

    Thank you, have this issue with my van. Seen so many videos but none come close to yours. Thank you, you showed and explained it so good. Haven’t had a chance to see if that is what is wrong with my doors.

    I did this about 18 months ago and the door quit in 15 months. Is there some flexible, woven, flat wire that could be spliced into the bend to be the flexible part?
    I don't want to keep doing this repeatedly.

    hi foxboss,
    i have followed the steps on this video for my 2006 Chrysler grand voyager and saw two problems on the wire and fixed it. the problem is that now the door doesn't get any electricity at all and I have no idea why. I did exactly as shown in this video. do you have any idea what I can look at?
    thank you for this video...

      @Foxboss9  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chaim junger sorry I've never had that problem. You may want to check for fuses that are specific for those doors. Could be that there's a fusible link inline also that could have burned out. But those are just guesses I really never troubleshot anything like that

    • @junger613
      @junger613 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you are sure fast as hell. I live in austria and repairs are very expensive here. as you are more experienced than I am I was hoping you would have a clue. there is no more electricity on the door. the power latch also doesn't respond anymore.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chaim junger the www is a Wonderful World isn't it? LOL. Honestly the hardest thing for any mechanic to troubleshoot is electrical. And that's having the vehicle in front of them. It's really difficult to do without seeing and having hands on. You're basically going to have to trace the power going to the door and find out where it has stopped. Without high-dollar electromagnetic tracing tools, it's basically you tearing apart your interior and following the wires back to the source of power. That's why I said the easiest thing probably to do would be just to check to see if there were specific fuses that control each individual door. Or definitely some sort of a relay. Or an inline fusible link. Because when those wires are shorting out there's a chance that it could cause any of those three things that I just mentioned to overheat and fail. Again really not sure. Good luck with it. its not a job that I wood like to do.
