I used to work for UHaul. +85% of the people renting equipment were morons. They expected everything to be plug-n-play like their x-box. I rented a truck to a couple who insisted on the cheapest truck on the lot, I repeated "It's a stick shift" at least 7 times, they said they could handle it. They lurched the truck off the lot into traffic, stalling it out, and blocking the traffic light for about 10-15 min. They finally got out, walked back to the office. The wife went all karen on me, and tried to blame me for renting them an 'undriveable' truck, and that I shouldn't expect a woman to drive (she wasn't driving) such an 'unsound' vehicle. I took the keys, walked out to the truck, and easily drove it back on the lot. I was 22y/o, and I'm female. That's when they confessed they didn't know how to drive a stick. SMFH

One of the saddest things I have seen in the last couple years was a guy driving a car with the license plate taped inside the back window, and in the proper location there was a dealer plate frame with screws. My guess is he either didn't own or couldn't operate a screwdriver (facepalm).

U-Haul is in the business of making money; They'll rent you a tow dolly when reality is that they should be telling you to have your car shipped instead. Some locations will rent you a tow dolly - because you can tow the empty tow dolly, but technically, you'd be over your tow payload capacity; after all, this is easy money for them. Many times, people should be looking at getting their car shipped instead ( or sell it and get a replacement at the destination. )

In a different life time, we used to be a truck rental dealer and couldn't believe how stupid people were. From taking the roof off of trucks when driving through McDonald's drive thrus to backing over tow dolls and car transport trailers we have seen it all. We had a woman who was renting a 24ft truck and I asked her what was the largest vehicle she a had ever driving ans she proudly said a Dodge Caravan. I drove her down a dead end street and told her to get herself out. To say she was pissed was an understatement. I dropped the truck off to her loading dock and met her husband who was going to drive the truck. She wrote a ni e letter to our supervisor and said thank you.

Catching up on Casey's older videos, and the first thought that comes to mind is that he tried to back up. Tow dollies can be super good, or they can be super bad, depending on your level of skills in driving. What I saw of his skills in this clip, he was the latter! Sad thing is that I see RV owners making many of the same mistakes because they think you just hook up and go, and they forget that they have another vehicle behind them that they have to steer for as well.

I once rented a uhaul 24 ft and a dolly like this one, I had no issue with sharp turns and the 1995 spirit I hauled during the move from Phoenix to Spokane. A couple of construction guys got me out of the hotel parking lot because their truck was too large for me to get through. The transit was a success BUT BUT I can NOT drive onto the hoover dam due to 9/11 that time (july of 2002 was the transit day) I had to take very long route through CA and then back to NV going sidways down the mountain for 2 hours getting to LV.

There are some people who think you can do Truck Stuff just because you have a Truck. Towing isn't the hardest thing to do, but it is an endeavor not to be ventured into without due regard to the added level of care and complexity. Towing a car on a swivel tow dolly adds another layer of complexity.
I travel with a Garmin and Google Maps on my phone. It's good to know if that road goes all the way around before you sally forth with a car on a tow dolly.

Great explanation on towing in general. I'm often asked about caravanning towing and always say drive slower, take more care and make a wider sweep around bends and watch the mirrors as you do so.
      Its all mostly common sense.

Wow. I have watched a lot of Casey‘s videos. And I usually read the comments. This is the first time that I’ve seen so many negative comments that were just plain mean. Casey is the one who had to go through all that and he was far more gracious about it.
For those of you who have never made an error in your life, congratulations. For those of you who think people are stupid for not knowing how to drive a stick shift or back up a trailer, please bear in mind that these skills simply aren’t taught any more, if they ever were. I don’t know how you expect someone to know these things if they haven’t been taught.
It’s not a matter of being a moron as some of you have called him, but that of lack of training. My dad had been a truck driver and insisted that all three of us kids knew how to change a tire, drive a stick , put on chains, back up a trailer even if we weren’t planning on doing it. Until I learned that ( and how to check and replace fluids and check tire pressure), I was not allowed to drive on the roads.
I learned to drive when I was about 12, and later had to take drivers training in school. Yes I’m really old. Schools actually had funding for things like that back then. But they never did say much about driving a stick ( and they were still more common than automatic back then), anything except spend on two hour session showing us how to drive a stick - in a video. There was nothing about any other practical knowledge.
I was lucky in that my dad taught us some basic skills and made sure we had an emergency kit and a small tool kit in each of our cars. Most people do not get the benefit of that kind of teaching.
Yes he was young and foolish. Yes he didn’t want to take the blame for it. And that is a pretty typical attitude of the age. But I have to lay some of the blame on U-Haul. They are in business to make money and they don’t care. But they should. That kind of carelessness is gonna get somebody killed because they think they know everything they need to know and they don’t.
A friend of mine was moving and she had never driven anything other than a subcompact car. So I went with her to the U-Haul and got a medium size moving van. The only thing he had to say to me was “gee, girls, can’t you find a man to drive the truck?”
They didn’t say one word about it being a stick shift. Also nothing about a reminder that a big heavy truck needs lots of room to stop, is wider than most vehicles and takes up more than its fair share in the lane, is longer than you think it is when you go to back up. Fortunately that was yet another skill my dad taught us is how to drive a big trucks, but they were flatbeds and that was a lot easier.
She was smart enough to call somebody who knew how to handle the truck. Yes, he should’ve done the same. But that’s easy to say after the fact. Sorry about the long comment but it really bothered me that so many of you were so cruel about his poor judgment. We all do things that are stupid we just don’t get them all filmed.

I had a 2wd auto dakota that the fuel pump gave out so i called my current boss/moms nieghbor and he was still on that side of town and going by not far from me so he gave me a lift to moms and i borrowed moms 1/2 ton and rented a dolly and had zero issues with dolly. Surprisingly the ujoint came loose real easily on a 92 michigan vechicle and put 2 small ratchet straps holding driveshaft up and over cause if slip joint wast in tranny it would leak fluid. Used tractor loader at home to lift bed off. Talk about easy fuel pump job unlike moms old trk with 34 gallon tank with 3/4 when pump shit out. Ratchet straps to lower tank slightly into another and keep repeating till on ground. Multiple ways of doing job just this guy maybe shouldve opted for trl instead more money. Oh wait not any more (dolly, tow bill, body work, plus stress, and dolly damage) which he might have insurance to cover but then possible deductibles to deal with vs trl rental

This is why if I ever need to dolly a car on a trip, I will ONLY use a full length trailer that all 4 wheels of my car sit on instead of just a 2 wheel dolly style like the one seen in this video...
That and my van has automatic parking brakes that lock the rear wheels when I stick it in Park and it won't let me turn off the ignition unless it's in Park making dolly-towing difficult and I also refuse to tow it backwards since it's a front-wheel drive and I won't leave the engine running just to keep the transmission lubricated so it doesn't eat itself during the tow...

I'd have them hook up to their own vehicle and tell them what they needed to do. If they decided not to despite my instructions and warnings, that was on them.

How far can I travel towing a 2000 lbs vehicle with the tow dolly. I will be towing for 800 miles. Planning on stopping every 3 hrs and stay average 55 mph. Would you recommend the 800 miles with tow dolly

Never, he should have got car trailer in stead of a dolly at least you can back it up, of course he may not be able to.
