No REAL OG GoW fan liked Judgement. None. GoW Judgement is actually the game that began to phase me out of Gears as a whole. It was so trash. The removal of Locust was absurd and a huge indicator that the developers of this game (People Can Fly) should have NEVER EVER taken complete control. To this day I have no idea why I have so much hate for this game. If GoW Judgement was a person, I'd probably be in jail for murder.
The campaign was alright, probably prefer it over Gears of War 4 but to me it wasn't anything special and felt more like a filler game while the main studio prepped for the next main Gears of War title. Multiplayer on the other hand was outright terrible. Least fun I have had in any Gears game. People complain about the lack of content in Gears 5 but as someone that only enjoys Versus, the game was seriously lacking in maps, and they weren't very good maps either. And lets not forget how they ruined Blood Drive by adding extra hallways and made it more vertical. Removing Locust from the multiplayer also limited the roster of playable characters. Again, people complain that Gears 5 is slow in releasing new characters, but at the current state of Gears 5, we have more characters than we did at the end of Judgments life cycle. Gears 5 is by no means a great game a far as gears of war standards, but I would take Gears 5 over Judgement any day.
Stopped playing before Blood Drive was added to the game but I do remember seeing game play of it and it almost looked like an entire different map. Gears 5 does have its fair share of problems and issues, but just like you, still prefer it over Judgement.
I come to think of it, when Baird & Cole rejoined with Markus (when they learned about Dom’s death), Cole did mention that they did get reinforcement from “the indies”, which Is the UIR. The only good thing about Judgement was “Overrun”, and many people switched back to Gears 3
I still think Judgement is still one of the better games. Mostly because how players outright ignored the execution mechanic and decided to remove it for insta-kill. It removed the Gnasher as a crutch weapon as players mainly use it to insta-gib enemies. However, with the other guns able to overshadow the Gnasher. While I agree executions are key to the Gears' identity. Players rarely attempt to use executions. (Such as the constant stationary spastic kill cam humping from Gears of war 3 and 4). I found Sofia Kendrick to be one of the better female characters in the Gears of War franchise because she was able express some emotional weakness in her combat dialogue. Unlike the wonky writing of Sam Byrne, Valera, and Alex Brand which boiled down to Tough and Standoffish. Paduk was one of the most interesting characters in Judgement. (To which, I would argue he was the main character). His disdain for the COG leadership, the UIR's difference in economic policy, and cultural significance of Gorasnia. On a character craft note, the amount of sardonic remarks at the expense at Loomis makes narrative sense and fulfill the role of comic relief and sarcastic asshole. Meaning that if Baird was equally sarcastic, it would blur to two characters together. (They have tried with between Del and JD, which their friendship is insufferable instead of endearing). Yeah, Baird took leadership seriously and hadn't developed his disdain for inefficiencies within the COG military. It is less of character assassination for Baird but revealing him in a less jaded state of mind. Considering the canon of the timeline. What I do wish the game did was make Baird feel out of his element. Baird would need to feel less sure of himself, Cole offering more emotional support and Paduk could have offered advice on leadership, since he was a Major in the UIR. (The comics and books described Baird as one who comes up with plans, leadership is natural to his disposition). In Judgement, Baird's presentation felt similar to Lt. Kim. Judgement did miss a huge opportunity for Cole's relationship with Baird. They could have referenced how to two met and why Cole would want to follow Baird around. Such as Sofia asking Baird and Cole how they know each other. Also, it is not like the developers didn't give enough attention to character design. Baird's Lt. Armor and Cole's bicep pads look amazing. It still think it would have been better if Paduk wore full UIR armor instead of modified COG armor. The biggest mistake to the game is the removal of Locusts in the multiplayer. The Sawed Off learned from the mistake of Gears 3 to be less of a horizontal blunderbuss with a wide spread to require aim to use effectively. While also giving the Medic class in Overrun mode a fighting chance when isolated from the team. The Spot Grenade became instrumental to discourage abusing the right hand advantage of player camera. The tactic of not in cover but peeking corners to insta-kill opponents when they approached. Meaning that a camper would be eventually flushed out of their hiding hole. The Stim Grenade, while fun, should remain a PvE only piece of equipment. While fun to hold your ground for several seconds. It was a easy item to abuse in 1v1s. (The Stim Grenade should have been the COG Gears ultimate ability instead of the revive pulse. It is better diegetically and encourages the healer to stand closer to allies). I still adamantly believe the red ammo pick up helps the game keep it's faster overall pace compared to the other Gears games. Unlike having moments of trying to look on the ground for weapons. The Green Ammo boxes being able to fully restock a player's ammo encourages a player to use up their power weapons and have a free refill to conserve afterwards. Something the game needed was to make swappable characters in the Overrun mode. Such as Tai Kaliso and Dom being a hunter and fit the archetype of Paduk's scout role. So it would make sense for the two be able to switch characters but still limited enough for teammates to know what kind of help they will get from specific characters. Marcus and Clayton Carmine should have been the Soldier role and swap out with Cole. Lt. Kim and the female Onyx Guard with Sofia. And the male Onyx Guard and Loomis to swap out with Baird as the Engineer. It is a damn shame that Grayson Hunt in the game didn't transfer his voice lines done by Steve Blum but use Marcus Fenix placeholder voice. I am going to add more to this comment later... I need to go to work.
All really fair points, totally agree with character design being great. Bairds armor in this game is one of my favorites as well as Paduks being one of the more interesting ones I've seen in Gears. Also, after reading your comment about Baird and Cole's friendship not being elaborated on, I didn't realize how much I want more of that. I know they met shortly after enlisting into the COG, but since Gears 1 they have portrayed them as being inseparable friends. I want to know what led to that as it seems they are already at that point by the events of Judgement.
It had less overall filler sections. Gears 3 was criticized for sections during the campaign that slowed down and rather bottom bitch objectives. Judgement cut that out and focused on replayablity with sections and smart spawn system.
I liked the game. Story was cool. I really dug the combat encounters where you get to set up turrets and what not like the MP mode before they attacked. Something different.
The things I loved the most about gears of war judgment were the main campaign, the aftermath campaign, survival and overrun. A lot of the weapon skins were pretty neat, I liked a good amount of the multiplayer maps and the choice of characters was good for me as I had all the characters including dlc characters.
if epic games atleast brought back the locust and executions in gears judgement, there would still be about 400 players playing gears judement instead of 8-30
I'll never forget the day it came out I went to my best friends house because he had already bought it and saw that executions were gone and you spawned in with 8 shells with the Gnasher. Never bought it for those 2 reasons.
I think the premise and mechanics in GOWJ do make sense, because it is a spin-off. I do prefer the non symmetrical maps more, because as you said, it promotes a run and gun playstyle. Higher level play is mostly just that, you use cover as a tool of mobility and not actually as cover. Art direction is also the best in the series. I love the brightness this game gives, while still giving that nice gritty tone of previous entries. This game is the best looking in the series imo
I kinda liked Gears Judgment... Overrun, weapon balancing and very good Soundtrack. But no DBNO, No locust in MP and strange mechanice really hurt the game though
Judgement almost got everything wrong that the other games before it got right. The few things I liked genuinely was Baird’s design not his personality just the physical look for the character. I thought Loomis was a sort of interesting character like Prescott but who can fight.
Yea, i played this game for maybe a week, if that. THE GAME IS A JOKE. I HONESTY DONT EVEN CONSIDER THIS GEARS OF WAR GAME AT ALL. It reminds me of any other 3rd person garbage game. I remember feeling soooo robbed and pissed. Wasted my time and money. I bought the special addition walkthrough hard copy book. Lol it still in the wrapper
Survival killed this game for me. It was just too difficult, even for a legit team of players. It wasn't that relaxing play experience like Horde. Also, the AI did such game-breaking BS stuff, had abilities that a normal player did not, it made playing it even more frustrating. Floating ticker bombs, auto-exploding Grenadiers (that ruined the execution fun) were just a few of the crap things.
Judgement had alot of cool things. Unfortunately they changed too much too fast and alienated their core fan base. The downside is that now the developers are too scared to change anything or try anything new
I gotta say, overall the multiplayer in judgement was just lacking. Gears needs good pvp or it will fail...like judgement. 5 launched kinda iffy, but they were actually able to recover mostly. But, no downs and the introduction of overpowered melee screwed them. I went back to Gears 3 bc of it.
Currently playing this for the first time. Had only ever played the first two. Finished 3 last week and yeah Judgement is fun to play but I could not care less about the story nor how the gameplay is segmented into tiny chunks that are scored like arcade games. Just makes me want rush through it to get to the next games.
I just feel like they kind of ruined the story, like where the fuck have the "Rager" Locust been inbetween Gears Judgement and Gears 3? They weren't in Gears 3 but they're in the "Aftermath" level.
I'm playing it right now. Found this video to check if anyone else felt so bored while playing. I missed it when it first came out do I really want to finish it, but it's just do meh.
@@mrkilljr.8743 No it doesn't! Judgement customization was trash compared to Gears 5. Gears 5 skins at least change the character and gives them a slightly different model with different armor and stuff. Only a few skins in Judgement were unlockable through loot boxes.
I like overrun but judgement is the worst gears 5,4 and judgement all suck sure gears 5 is a much better game but it still sucks they need to stop adding modern menachics in the old games and keep it the way people love it
I really liked overrun but I think judgement sucks but gears 4 and 5 is better but at the same time gears 4 and 5 was boring because they really didn’t add nothing better to it like they should at least add creatures to gears 5 and honestly they should of added overrun to gears 4 because it would be honest be perfect but they didn’t add better to it so it honestly got boring that fast

I agree, Gears 4 had some good multiplayer but the campaign wasn't very good. Fighting deebees for half the game and then fighting the swarm for the second half wasn't very fun. Both were enemies that could not replace the Horde
I just finished Gears Judgement. I think what people are not realizing that this game is not supposed to fit in with the rest of the series. Thats why its called Gears of War Judgement and not Gears of War 4.
Agreed, it's just everyone running around with shotguns, at least gears 5 changed this with arcade mode which has everyone start with Lancers, hammerburst and enforcers. Also you can get rid of shotguns in gears 5 if you change the settings.

I enjoyed the hell out of Judgement.
yeah i miss this game
Haha loved this game. Played the shit out of it
ME too i just beat the final boss and aftermath yesterday
I'm about to try the campaign. I don't really like the survival mode. Horde was way better.
Overrun is the saving grace of judgment and i enjoy the hell out of it
I liked judgement Baird
