Biggest bang for the buck with an 88 is headwork. My EVO heads flow better then the 88's and I went with bigger valves... I still went with bigger bore, 10.5 compression, a woods 5 conversion with heads that flow 285 with a matching ported intake to a SECV44. Easy 110-115 foot pounds on an Ultra TC. MM fuel injection had seen better days but with 3.37 gearing I don't about 0-60 with newer motors. They don't sound like a Harley.
I'm running stock jugs...bored to 95" no head work...(yet) 585 s$s cams 10.5..1 Wesco Pistons. And dyno jet tuner. With dual exhaust. Got 108hp and 113 tq..
I have a 2001 FXST, bored out to 95 cui, with an Andrews TW26G geared cam. The heads are stock and the bike has 152,000 miles on it. I made the conversion in 2005, when it had 60,000 miles on it. It still runs great. BTW, I'm 75 and riding it keeps me young!
Did you have to do any other upgrades when you did your engine? Like any primary or transmission upgrades to handle the additional power? I’d like to have more power but also want reliability
The twin cam actually is a pretty good motor you just need to do some things to it to improve the reliability and up the hp some. Take care of the cam chain tensioners in the early models, get it breathing better, and get that stock cam out of there. I am all for more power than what the stock motors are putting out. However I think some people get too caught up in a numbers game. There will always be someone out there with more money to throw around, who gets some big inch monster motor. Riding should be about having fun, not like we are in some competition with who has the most hp.
When I was a kid, I was just able to scrape up enough to buy a used Honda 400 and park it up the street where my parents couldn't see me getting on it!
My 88 is good just like it is. I Build a sportster, and put everything on it, and in my harley education, I found, its not about how fast you get there. Its about getting there and looking cool in he process :) Ride on!
The 88 is awesome but can't afford a new bike and my MC runs away from me at 3k rpm in 6th and I'm 5th gear pegged lmao, 05 RK was a screamin demon lmao...90 mph suicide style 🤣
@@GixxerFoo I'm leaving it pretty much stock externally but making a few streetable performance upgrades. I found mine about 30 minutes south if Milwaukee with only 18k on the odometer.
I have a 2001 faboy. Bored and honed the cylinders to 95 with KB 10:1 pistons. Fully ported the head and installed a feuling 7090 kit to upgrade to hydraulic tensioners. Reaper 525 cams to finish it off. First gear throttle wheelies all day.
I’m good with my 88 as well,03 Heritage Softail Classic, runs great and looks amazing, like Daniel Jones’spost says,it’s not how fast you can get there,it’s how cool you look when you do get there, great saying Brother! Thanks Gixxer!
Wow! With winter coming on here in Jersey I can have my '04 Fat Boy ready to rock by spring. This is the best upgrade for the money I've ever heard of. Now all I need is the money. Hey Honey Darling Sweetie Lover Doll, would you mind if I...
Mm88. Had to change cam shaftchain tensioners went with upgraded gear system new cams. Pushrods oil pump and what ever else came in the kit. Leaving it to my youngest son of three when I’m gone. Didn’t want him to have to worry about it. I’ve put 40000 miles on it since I have had it. 4years. Pull a trailer for camping. No problems. If I ride at 55 mph or 80 mph. I still get there. I’m not a speed freak. I don’t race anybody. I cruise at speed I feel comfy at. State two lanes. Hate riding interststates. Rather just cruise.
Gixxerfoo, awesome content! Let me add something to this discussion. If you bought a 1999 Road King right now at the average of $5K, and did this upgrade taking the 88 TC to a 98 TC, you'd be into it for less than $7K. You can't even buy an 883 Sportster for that right now! It's a screaming deal for anyone willing to do the labor. You should do one on your channel and sell entries to raffle it off.....
@@JByb04 Same here! Got an 06 FLHRI for 6k last month, myself. Purposefully looked for an older 88ci so I can upgrade it to the 98ci when the old TC gets tired.
I like your will davis program in the back ground. He was a good friend of my dad as well as one of my heros growing up. My dad was part of the Winchester HD team lead by tuner Eddie Adkins who will rode for. Love your channel. Keep it up.
2000 road glide twin cam 88 Big bore kit 509 gear cams S&S plate oil pump installed two extra teeth on my drive sprocket off trans. @@GixxerFoo thank you very much. I was thinking of a dino after I install the 51 mm zipper. But I'm up in age and a little old school, we never did that kind of stuff back in the day. We had a area that we did quarter mile races just on the outskirts of town. Fun stuff, it was the 1970s of a movie American Graffiti.
You might outrun a stock 107 that still has the speed limiter. I'm running a 2019 deluxe, 107 stage 2 (zippers 468 RScam). No one has been able to keep up, yet.
.509 cam ( s&S, , performance lifters,S&S cam plate ( S&S) V&H f bomb 2into1 exhaust, V&H venturi, K&N high flow air cleaner, Accell coils and plugs Getting 93hp and 83ft lbs torque. Pretty good for an 18 year old Softail!
I just found this video as I recently picked up a 2003 100th Anniversary Heritage Softail. it only has 22K miles on it and is stock except for Screaming Eagle slip-ons. I looked up Hammer Performance and it turns out they are only about an hour from me. Their prices for the cylinders and head porting are still the same. They are going to put together a turn-key package for me including the cylinders, head porting, cams, tuner, and all misc. parts needed for the complete install. Looking forward to really waking up this 88 and seeing how it feels compared to my 2012 Switchback 103 with dealer installed Stage 1 with a Cobra Power Pro 2 in 1 pipe.
That’s what I’m starting to think as well. I bought a Jagg fan assisted oil cooler and an HD speedo with tach to keep me from forgetting to shift into 6th or from trying to shift into 7th when I’m already in 6th. Hopefully the tach will help put a stop to this. What I’m finding out is how much the 88 TC responds to revs, it really comes alive with a few R’s.
Have the 93' Evo Heritage OKC Bike show winner. Always wanted a second Harley in case one bike was down I could ride the other one. Wanted a 03' 100th Anniv. Heritage carb. version. Never did it because my Evo never broke down and I kept up with all the Twin Cam issues. But today, after watching this vid, I was inspired to start a search for one! Then I remembered the bottom end issues.....again. If you changed flywheels, did timken bearing conversion and gear cam/oil pump/cam bearing/cam plate + Hammer 98 ic topend your at $3000 + easy. Guess I need to go back to focusing on my budget topend for my 93' Evo Heritage. LOL!
If you found a 99 to 2002 Twin Cam 88 you're in business, they have the Timken lower end and the better crank. Of course you'd want to get the cam chest upgraded but you don't have the crank issues 2002 and earlier.
Very true and was always my dilemma. I only considered a Twin Cam for its stronger cases to add more torque. If I was going to get a Harley Twin Cam it had to have the better bottom end, original vin on cases, carburetor, heritage model AND be the 100th anniv. model....and be $10K or less. Thats all. LOL!!!!!
I just did 98 build. Used Wiseco 10.25 pop up pistons paired with a set of Andrew TW37 cams on my road king. On initial test ride I could definitely feel the power increase by the seat of my pants. Note to anyone attempting this, do not forget to order the heavy duty clutch spring! The stock spring will not hold the increase in power.
I live in north Idaho near hammer performance and had them do the 98 big bore and their stage 2 smash heads, ez stqrt s&s 585 cams and ended up with 108ho 108 tq couldn’t be happier. I had to pit a bigger breather on to unlock those #s bit its worth it. M8107s have to keep up with me
Getting the right cams is very important in upping the power, as well as having the heads done. Not saying some of the aftermarket heads aren't nice but the best option is finding someone who knows what they are doing port the heads. If the heads are done right, and the right cams, you're looking at around a 30 hp gain, which you're really going to feel on a bike.
I have the 03 fat boy. After watching your videos, I'm gonna do the 98 with end upgraded cam. Hopefully one with an overlap for a few more hp. For me, it's more important to keep the factory motor Instead of S&S in this bike. And you're right, I'd much rather put a little money into this one instead of my in. A brand new for sure. Thanks man, I enjoy your channel.
My 06 Road King has a 95ci. 11 :1 Wisconsin pistons Red Shift cams and .600 lift springs. Ported heads Mikuni carb. Have out run103s,107s,110s, one M8 and more Sportys than I can remember
I have a 1999 wide glide. Tc 88 carb bike. They put this motor is the big touring bikes etc.... so it moves the bike good naturally. Thanks for the content.
A good builder like Baxters Garage or R&R Cycles for example will modify your heads, bore your existing barrels, and recommend a cam that fits your riding style. The power gains are incredible considering the cost especially if you do your own work. The best thing is it's designed for how and what you ride. Worth every dollar in my opinion.
Great point! Kevin Baxter has some awesome engine packages, he gets those motors setup the way should of been from the factory. If Harley built motors like that they wouldn't make any money on parts or long block engines.
I finished my bike...was doin the top end..head work ,cams and rehone the jugs...so i ended up touching the bottom end reaper 543 cams and fueling oil pump and camplate , pushrods. New piston rings..i should be pushing close to a 107. And this is on the cvo screaming eagle 103 twin cam motor
For my 2002 Road King I used the S&S 95" cylinders and pistons. I think it's better than having your cylinders bored because the S&S are purpose built to be 95". I also went with S&S gear drive cams, stock heads with porting and a competition valve job. A Ramjet one piece intake made for an EVO but bolts right on the twin cam. It simply uses gaskets against the heads And eliminates those rubber seals that eventually leak.A 42mm Mikuni. A Thundeheart stand alone ignition and a Supertrapp 2 into 1 exhaust. Makes much more power than tru duals. I'm pretty happy with the power that it makes. I have no trouble keeping up with the larger bore Harleys.
I've always said don't count out a short stroke 88 with a 95" kit! I too like the purpose built cylinders, a cylinder bore works but the 95 kit is hard to beat if you have the cash. You've got a really good year with that 02 and the tapered bearing lower end, no issues there!
I did the Gear Drive conversion on my 2006 road king custom as my runout was only 1 thousandths. 509G cams, new oil pump/came plate, and the DynoJet that you suggested.. after 32 tune upgrades.... (without a Wide Band to tune it, that what it takes), and this is dead even with my buddies 2020 107 ultra limited. Super happy with it. 10K for the bike 2K for the parts, and hopefully I can keep this for the rest of my life..... Way cheaper.
That is awesome! Damn your run out was almost perfect too! That's what I love is getting some power put in a older bike and getting it up there with the high dollar new ones for way less!
The 98 kit from hammer with the head porting works great. I also had to upgrade the cam plate to correct the cam chain tensioner problem. I'm into it for about 3 grand. Best money I ever spent. Put the fun back into it. Puts a smile on my face every time.
Right on, three grand is a lot cheaper than a new Harley! The upgraded cam plate is an awesome upgrade on the 88 motors, I like to with the Feuling tensioner pads too.
My 02 fxd 88 certainly holds its own.. Basically stock but starts good an runs good.. S&S duel pod inlet an v an h pipes.. Reliable and an owner pleaser
Still have my 💯 th anniversary Heritage, did the Jims Timken lower, SE 4.375” stroke flywheels, sent to Darkhorse to be lightened, everything welded, balanced and trued. Running a 107ci with 10.9CR using TMan 660 cams, thumper heads from TMan it’s putting down at wheel right at 126hp/130lbs
Yes I left the counterbalance in. It’s was around $800 from Darkhorse and, $1200 for the flywheel but, if had to do over I’d just send my flywheel to Darkhorse and have them work on it. They can build it to what you need
@@justinphillips5702 Thanks for info. I have a 93' Evo Heritage and always wanted an 03' 100th Anniv. Heritage as an extra Harley. But the bottom end work needed to add more power and that chain in the bottom end always made me back away. No issues with more power and that counterbalance/chain?
man... you're awesome! so many good tips and information has saved me tons of money and my bikes run always tip top shape and sound really good and healthy. thank you
I have an 05 Road King classic fuel injected, this year I installed an S&S gear drive 510G cam kit, with S&S lifters, bassani true dual fishtails, breather kit and a tuner. The difference is night and day, I ride with guys that ride 103s Milwaukee M8 107s and 114s and I have no problem keeping up with them, the next step will be 97inch big bore.
i have a twin cam 88 and even tho its a lil underpower i have a power commander unit installed. and i like the 88. idont need anything more powerful. i cruse at 70mph. it gets up to speed fast enough.
Great article Gixxr, I've got my o1 RK dialed in with Andrews 26 grind cam, Dynojet tuner, HD's touring muffler and she will hold her own with any HD on the street. And still 88 cu in. As far as Harleys go, nothing makes HP on a stock engine better than a long low restricted muffler. I didn't come up with that, Joe Minton did, Im a believer.
Good Post! Speaking of Joe Minton I have several of his old VHS tech tapes!! Lol. Plus every tech article in every magazine he wrote in!! The only problem I had was with the TW -21 can he swore by!! Built up too much cylinder pressure way to fast with the intake valve and not enough duration built in the cam! Changed to the 203 cam problem solved!!
Did the 100cubic inch S&S sidewinder big bore kit gear drive that you showcased in one of your older video's absolutely amazing!!!💪💪💪💪💪 and added a set of Dave mackie ported heads now its a beast! Leaving the rest of the team with 2020 CVO,s in the dust 💪💪💪💪💪
I'm a huge fan of early TC 88s I bore & hone to 95 or 98 lots of cyclinders ! I have never tried to build a 88 to see how much HP Could make but I've built a few 80 inch Evo s that make 90 + HP & I would be pretty confident I could make an 88 to 100 HP without going to a bigger bore ! I might have to step out of the box a little ,just cause a cam says it's for 100 cube plus motors doesn't mean you can't put it in smaller motor ! Anyway that's my take on it !
We all know the saying no replacement for displacement, but you can really make some power with just an 88. Compression, heads and the right cam will go a long ways.
RIght on man. Took mine to a 98", paired with S&S 510 CAMS, it screamed, it was like I was on a totally different bike. Guarantee it'd smoke a 103. Now, downside of the 510 cam, I lost lots of low end, not enjoyable when riding slow curvy roads and having to have the rpm's above 2500 to have power. Swapped em for 509's. She's not as quick on the top end but she's got consistent power from idle on, and lots of torque.
Harley Davidson has one of the most labor intensive and hottest motorcycle engines out there. This is nearly 2022 and as of 2017 Harley Davidson just got around to improving the hot ass design with all the 1950’s/1960’s technology that other manufacturers dumped decades ago that run cooler with full liquid cooling and full counter balancing, a gear drive primary.
I fully agree, they were selling a metric butt ton of bikes for years though. Every time they tried to modernize they got quite a bit of backlash from the customers. But now they have to modernize as the customer base is changing.
Harley engines are hot if stuck in traffic only. That happens with liquid cooled engines too. If air keeps flowing, air cooled engines will run at normal operation temperature, which is far from uncomfortable.
My 03 88 cubic inch ultra is a monster now, DragonT 143 cubic inch engine on Nitrous 👶BABY!.❤😎 Dyno testing next now weather Temps have dropped in our CANADIAN WEATHER!🇨🇦
What’s up my Topeka brother! My buddy has an ‘05 road king that he bought (with unknown mods because it was an auction bike) and it comes close to keeping up with my ‘09 cvo 110 fat bob. So, yeah, the 88 can be a beast!
I see this is 3 years old but I have a stage 1 2000 twin cam 88 and plan to pretty much leave it that way. The extra power sounds great but I don't want to start having compensator problems. It's a highway bike and I would rather have reliability. Going to change the tensioners for gears but not much else.
I have a 88 twin cam softail duece and I have beat a 103 many of times with just jet and exhaust after I put cams in it I pulled on a 114 and we stopped at about 80.
I have the last year TC88. It is a 06 Road King and I had Andrews TW26 cams put in the bike. I still need to get it dyno tuned but it runs pretty damn good. Eventually I will probably get a S&S 97/98 ci kit and some head work but I'm happy with it as is. The 06 TC88 came stock with the better beehive valve springs and 7mm valves.
2006 was a really crazy year on the 88, they did all kinds of different things across the Dyna, Softail and Touring line. Dynas in 2006 were a really crazy hybrid motor lol.
Bingo! I did the new 98 jugs and 10:1 pistons with the Cam that T-man recommended for a single rider on my 06 Electraglide. T-man also did a porting job and put in slightly stronger springs. I did have to put a stronger clutch spring as the clutch was slipping a little during the tune. A riding buddy of mine that trades every 3 or 4 years is surprised he can't walk away from me with his M-8 Roadglide.
I always was tempted to build a sleeper 88" with all out headwork, comp ration over 11:1, and a cam like the T Man 590. I think the results would be quite interesting.
I was thinking the same thing! The problem with displacement, is heat. Or, how to manage the heat, when going bigger. I always believe in solid head work, quality cam chest components, nuff!
@tacticaldorito Please clarify your comment. It's the compression. Give it more air without increasing pressure, and it will run cooler. Give it more air without increasing pressure (compression)? Like a cam with increased lift/duration?
That's awesome! Hammer is a excellent company to work with! I have never dealt with a company that is as truly interested in the success of your build, they want to converse with you and get you exactly what you need.
I did an update to my softail FI 88 this winter - too bad i didnt see this video because i put the SE 203 cam in it and i have to admit i'm disappointed. I also did SE upgrade to the oil pump and cam plate mostly to convert to hydraulic cam tensioner to eliminate that issue. While doing that i also upgraded the exhaust to a cobra 2 into 1 and bought a dyna tuner and had it tuned. All of that work cost me a few $$ but i figured it would be a good upgrade and would kick the tension issue down the road. However, I'm def having buyers remorse on the cam and wished i had done a S&S or Wood. If I upgrade the jugs then I'll def upgrade the cam as well.
The 203 makes good torque, it's a great mid range torque cam though! Getting the tensioners done is the big one though, it takes a lot of worry out of the 88.
Same here Jeff, 05 Superglide Stage 1 & Cobra 2000 fuel enhancer & it runs strong so no need to waste $ on engine work. I’ve ridden it hard for 20,000 mi w/no issues, stay safe!
Listen I rode a Milwaukee 8 road king the thing was awesome!! But, I had my 88ci rk built into a 10.5:1 compression beadwork , 37n cams and a dyno tune. Have zero problem keeping up with bolt on 107/114’s. 95hp/108tq out of mine
That's awesome! The new bikes put down some power, no doubt about that but they aren't cheap either. You got some great numbers out of your bike, that torque makes up for a lot and it did made some excellent horsepower.
Unfortunately it’s in a road king and I’m 300lbs so the power to weight rations is killing me lol, bike is a blast that’s all that matters! Love the videos keep em comin
OK I’m not interested in keeping up with the 103‘s the M8s and all those guys…. but what I am interested in is serious reliability? If you were going to buy an older Harley and leave it bone stock…. And all you were after is longevity….period. Which old Harley would you get?
I'm in the market for a dyna low rider twin-cam 88, the 2006 I am looking at is a 6 speed and EFI. The chasis and frames on these bikes are known to be some of the best handling bikes harley's ever made. I have a smaller bike (Triumph Bonneville) that is fast and nimble which I would like to keep but I'm looking for something with longer range and more torque as a second bike. Problem is, as soon as you start doing performance mods to these bikes whether it's stage 1 or more, I've found that the MPG takes a huge hit!! This is the practical down-side increasing power and performance and the dirty little secret that nobody talks about.
2006 is a great year for the 88, it has the hydraulic tensioners and a awesome set of heads. Fuel economy really depends on riding habit and good tuning, if it's tuned well and rode easy they will get some mileage.
I gotta tell you guys… I have a ‘02 Wide Glide that now has 170000 miles on the clock, and the 0nly mods I personally have done on it was the late style hydraulic tensioners and plate along with a new high volume oil pump! I even re-used the original push rods when I replaced the roller lifters from Andrews! It is totally reliable bike that had never been back to the Harley shop since I bought it in 2002… I have been using only mobile 1 synthetic 20/40 and do all maintenance and repairs
I have 88 and I'm looking at the s&s 100 inch or 124 inch hot set up kit. The 124 hot set up kit is an amazing value basically a whole s&s engine for 5 grand
That's a really mean setup! It's gonna need some case boring on the 124 but well worth it, while you've got it down you can get the crank and bearings done too.
If you are using a B motor as your base, the piston diameter is going to be the Achilles' heel. The reason being is because the cylinder studs are not designed to go bigger than the bolt on 3.875" pistons. I ended up blowing out head gaskets in the end after upgrading the ECM, clutch, transmission, pulley bolts. Build cost was over 10k not including labor. Cheaper to buy another motorcycle than to touch the 88".
I have a 100th Anniversary FLHR that the previous owner (I've had it for 15 years) took to 95 cubes, added a big Mikuni carb & filled with every available Screamin' Eagle part there is. She goes great & leaves black lines on the tarmac almost at will. I love it to death but I'm about to buy a bog stock 100th Anniversary FXD (what can I say? I like the tank badge...) & I was wondering what to do with it. And now I know. Thanks for the advice. You've gained another subscriber.
I'm happy with my 02 Fatboy with fuel injection. S&S cams. I'm not throwing money at making it faster than others. I just love the pickup that happens at about 3500 rippems. Very dependable
It's pretty thin but it seems to work very well on the factory cylinders, with the 88 it's always a good idea to update the cam plate and the spring tensioners.
The only concern I have with all of this top end rework, especially with bumping up the compession is making sure my lower end, specifically my connecting rod bearings are in good shape. A nice and tight brand new top end with high compression in a bike 40k+ miles may grenade the lower end. Just something to keep in mind.
@@GixxerFoo Especially the early TC models with the Timken bearings. Super solid. Usually nice low runout. Great video by the way. Can't wait to rebuild my 2000 Duece over the winter.
@@SparyZWanTuhNayHo I have a 2005 Softail and I was told Harley went cheap and stopped using Timken bearings for a few years. Do you recommend replacing the stock with Temkins if I did the top end?
We know the 88 runs a little on the warmer side. Is there any overheating issues boring stock jugs to the 98 with 10:1 compression?? Hammerhead is a hell of a deal! TIA!!
Shouldn't have any issues what so ever with over heating, I've seen a lot of bore jobs over the years on stock jugs without issues. Still wouldn't hurt to get a oil cooler if you don't have one yet, even a stock bike needs one of those.
Good info to know, I just got a RKC with the 88, really impresses me , but last bike I owned was a Yamaha Radian 600, amazing how I can slow down and forget to down shift and still get the bike back up to speed quickly. Right now I am happy with it but if I keep it and need to rebuild maybe the I upgrade it.
1999 to 2002 isn't a serious issue on the cranks, but honestly if the run out is .003 or less and you don't absolutely beat on the bike the crank is going to be fine. When your crank run out is high you can be setting yourself up for potential issues later on down the road.
@@GixxerFoo I have an 03 so I guess that puts me in the high-risk category. No Timken bearing on my crank. It is what it is. If I ever go to a stage 3 I'm going to need a lefty bearing at minimum and to get my crank welded.
@@dilo777 yeah having a twin cam 88 makes me miss my Evo sporty in some ways. I've had to do a ton of work on this twin cam and I never had to do anything on the sporty except change the oil and tires.

If you build it right it's right !
Maybe for a future video..Just looking at the current big twins (not the touring models), I have the feeling all the frames are now the same ? Back in the day you had 28 and 32 degree necks (the latter for the FXDWG and the Low Rider) but now these models are gone and only 28 degree frames remain. A cost cutting measure ? I might be mistaken though...
The softail is all the same, I believe they are getting the degree change through the triple trees now. Like with the Low Rider S, Fat Bob and Sport Glide.
You guys are doing anything with the Kranks it’s like he may be better materials titanium I don’t know just a question where is lightning then I bought a man to get them to rev
I would for sure check the runout on the crank before moving forward, it's worth the time to check it first. If the run out is pretty .003 or less I would feel good about putting some power in it. For sure don't beat on it all the time though, the best way though is get the crank done up though.
I don’t know what the horsepower and torque specs are after having my cam chest rebuilt with Feuling components (plate, oil pump, bearings etc..) and S&S 510 cams on my carbureted 02 Electra Glide. All I know is that the old girl really moves down the road now. And the old school engine sound with my Sharkroad slipon’s is what I want.
That is awesome! Since you mentioned that with the Feuling cam chest setup Feuling has shown it can pick up a few horsepower on the dyno. I'm sure your cam has quite a bit to do with that too but Feuling's setup does roll a lot smoother than the factory.
Would you go with new cylinders in a 98 kit or have your original cylinders bored with some head porting done at the same time?
I vote bore original cylinders, heads work, and the correct cam
I would take the Hammer way and get a set of cams i like
Biggest bang for the buck with an 88 is headwork.
Take the money from the new cylinders and put that towards cams, plate and pump.
That's awesome! The 2001 has a very strong bottom end, but converting at 60K and still running strong just shows how tough those motors are!
@Daryl Stanford, always great to hear guys 70+ still riding and 'staying young.' You're just 4 years ahead of me, so thanks for the inspiration!
Good for you sir!! Kudos!!
Did you have to do any other upgrades when you did your engine? Like any primary or transmission upgrades to handle the additional power? I’d like to have more power but also want reliability
Dude you're a hero. Love to hear it
The twin cam actually is a pretty good motor you just need to do some things to it to improve the reliability and up the hp some.
A freshly rebuilt 88 will be my grad gift to my son when the time comes. The little shit doesn't have a clue how lucky he is.
Are you taking adoption applications cause I want one!

When I was a kid, I was just able to scrape up enough to buy a used Honda 400 and park it up the street where my parents couldn't see me getting on it!
🤣
My 88 is good just like it is. I Build a sportster, and put everything on it, and in my harley education, I found, its not about how fast you get there. Its about getting there and looking cool in he process :) Ride on!
Right on, they are pretty fun with a little extra in them though. Sportsters are a lot of fun to build out, those motors are very reliable and solid.
Lol do it to a dyna and have even more fun
Agree daddy O !!
The 88 is awesome but can't afford a new bike and my MC runs away from me at 3k rpm in 6th and I'm 5th gear pegged lmao, 05 RK was a screamin demon lmao...90 mph suicide style 🤣
And making it in once piece, unlike the twinkies
I just bought an 03 100th anniversary dyna superglide and this rolled across my feed.
That's awesome! Those 100th anniversary bikes will be worth some money!
@@GixxerFoo I'm leaving it pretty much stock externally but making a few streetable performance upgrades. I found mine about 30 minutes south if Milwaukee with only 18k on the odometer.
I got the S&S 100" big bore kit, 525 fueling cams. I'm happy.
It's really not a bad deal at having the cylinders bored, but with 10.5:1 compression I would have some compression releases installed as well too.
My 88 with screaming eagle big bore and cam kit runs just over 100 horses. It’s great.
100 horse is really the magic number, a short stroke with a 95 kit runs strong!
I have '03 FXDL and happy that its all stock. For now! Although it good to know the heads are Hemi.
Just bought an '04 Road King for 5K. What you said was my exact thoughts when I bought the bike. :D
I've thought about doing something like that, it's not a bad idea!

I have an 04 Heritage Softail Classic EFI and just bought a stage 2 big sucker intake and put a 585 cam kit, plus PowerVision tuner....it's a beast!!!
Those cam swaps make a huge difference! Most times a cam swap is all you need to get the power and torque you're after!
Definitely a huge difference! Doing slow speed maneuvers aren't really possible now, because going slow is no longer possible!!

Best to leave it alone and enjoy the ride
That’s what I’m starting to think as well. I bought a Jagg fan assisted oil cooler and an HD speedo with tach to keep me from forgetting to shift into 6th or from trying to shift into 7th when I’m already in 6th. Hopefully the tach will help put a stop to this. What I’m finding out is how much the 88 TC responds to revs, it really comes alive with a few R’s.
My friends 88 always surprises me, surprisingly still running lol
Lol some of them had some issues but there are some good ones out there!
That's an excellent point, yeah the stock spring isn't gonna hold that extra power!
Thanks for the tip. I am installing the 100" winter power pack 585 easy start chain drive into my 05 fcdc.
M8107s have to keep up with me
I sent my 01 heritage 88 off to Port and polish old school. Works for me , no extra shit involved.
That makes a big difference, compression and heads with a cam goes a long way.
We sure appreciate the support over here!

Damn with that compression and high lift cam that's a screamer! You get some compression in a Twin Cam and they really come to life!
With compression like that how do you avoid detonation and overheating in a air cooled engine?
Tell us about what you do for gas
I have a 1999 wide glide. Tc 88 carb bike. They put this motor is the big touring bikes etc.... so it moves the bike good naturally. Thanks for the content.
The 88 makes some really good torque, it pulls those big touring bikes around pretty well.
Nice work! Sounds like you've done everything right, that bike is going to rip!
That's what I love is getting some power put in a older bike and getting it up there with the high dollar new ones for way less!
you can its a harley
I got slip ons. Arlen ness big sucker. 509 gear cams. Dynoed at 86hp 96 torque. On 2006 twin cam 88
Damn that's some good numbers, 88's makes a lot of torque!
Definitely recommend the piston fitting from Hammer. Did it on my sporty 1250 kit and that made it such a plug and play installation.

I know, you can make some good power outta them… sky’s the limit, just takes money but is less expensive than buying a new $30-$40,000 bike
Justin,
How much did all the bottom end work cost? Did you leave the counterbalance/chain in bottom end?
Yes I left the counterbalance in. It’s was around $800 from Darkhorse and, $1200 for the flywheel but, if had to do over I’d just send my flywheel to Darkhorse and have them work on it. They can build it to what you need

The right exhaust on a Harley is everything, that will make or break your power output!
You know his whereabouts these days? Is he still alive?

They make some serious power with the short stroke crank, that short stroke for sure has it's advantages!
Jerry Branch was the first to get 100 HP out of a 88" TW -55 cams with his head work!!
I’ve got an 02 Deuce . SE 95 kit cam upgrade , 42 mikuni . My scoot runs pretty hard for a 19 yo bike .

There's a lot to be said for the low end and mid range!

I have Tc100. Head work. Pipes. Fueling 574. 102 Hp. 105 torque. Better than stock
Other manufacturers dumped decades ago? Take a look at the powerplant in the '18+ Yamaha Star Venture Eluder/Transcontinental. Lol
Harley engines are hot if stuck in traffic only. That happens with liquid cooled engines too. If air keeps flowing, air cooled engines will run at normal operation temperature, which is far from uncomfortable.

Sounds like he may have more than just a stock 88 in there!
I had my 01 88 fully built to a S&S stroked 107 and a screaming eagle 6 speed installed. What damn difference. Cost a third of what a new bike cost
Go with the S&S 100" complete kit pistons jugs rings gaskets and includes the cams lifters and push rod with tubes
Cool to mention 88 with 95 big bore and stroker crank with all the fixins. 106 hp and 119 ft. Lbs.
I've always said not to count out that 95, there's a lot to be said about that short stroke crank.
I always was tempted to build a sleeper 88" with all out headwork, comp ration over 11:1, and a cam like the T Man 590. I think the results would be quite interesting.
Exactly what I'm planning for my 04 with factory ported heads!!
I was thinking the same thing!
The problem with displacement, is heat.
Or, how to manage the heat, when going bigger. I always believe in solid head work, quality cam chest components, nuff!
@@xlrider1565 not much as compression effects on heat! .
@@xlrider1565 it’s the compression. Give it more air without increasing pressure and it will run cooler.

Give it more air without increasing pressure (compression)?

This video came out just in time. Looks like its gonna be HAMMER TIME for me. Thnx bud
I am running a stage 1 88 and I am not getting left behind. I ride with a club that runs hard and I stay up just fine.
Tc88 w/ 4" sidewinder (100" ) .Fueling 574. S&S power tune exhaust. 103Hp 110 torque. Also headwork.Approx $2200
Damn that's some excellent numbers, I bet that bike pulls hard!
2006 fxdi, stock 88 fuel injected. 98 kit would probably mean a larger throttle body, especially with the ported heads and a cam.
With the delphi system all you would need is a good tune, the stock throttle body with a high flow air cleaner will be more than enough air.
That's awesome to hear! You'll probably be disappointed with a more stock motor after riding one that's got some performance parts on it!
@@GixxerFoo I know but it will give me the motivation I need to drag my sorry ass out of bed every morning & get to work... 😏
I'm happy with my 02 Fatboy with fuel injection. S&S cams. I'm not throwing money at making it faster than others. I just love the pickup that happens at about 3500 rippems. Very dependable
That's all anyone needs is a good cam set in there and just ride it!
What size cam do you recommend for the 88 without all the head work and bigger bore. 02 Fatboy fuel injection ??
Older 88’s have the old style plate. That limits your cam
Choices. Boring an 88 cylinder to 98 is dubious. It doesn’t leave much in the walls.
It's pretty thin but it seems to work very well on the factory cylinders, with the 88 it's always a good idea to update the cam plate and the spring tensioners.
@@GixxerFoo Is it possible to safely bore the Screamin Eagle 95 jugs out to 100 ci? I know S&S sells a 100 ci piston kit for the twin cam 88
The only concern I have with all of this top end rework, especially with bumping up the compession is making sure my lower end, specifically my connecting rod bearings are in good shape. A nice and tight brand new top end with high compression in a bike 40k+ miles may grenade the lower end. Just something to keep in mind.
The bottom ends on the Evo's were very stout, they outlasted the top ends many rebuilds over. It was sure hard to beat that tapered bearing lower end.
@@duecemcd7102 if you are opening the cam chest most definitely
@@SparyZWanTuhNayHo My 2001 fatboy crank was .0012"
Love to see a video on cam choices for the 95” and 98”.
You can use the cams for the 88, but you get quite a bit of extra power with increase in bore and compression!
Great video! Makes want to find a bike with an 88 and play around with it, I would go with the boring and head work from Hammer.
If you find a 88 cheap it's a great way to make a runner for an extra 1500 bucks if you do it yourself.
@@GixxerFoo , I agree, definitely will do the work myself. Keep the videos coming, very Informative.
I was able to hit the 100hp 110lbs torque…2002 Road King…huge difference!!
That's just perfect right there for an 88! I like to be about 100/100 on a Twin Cam anymore isn't a bad thing at all.
@@GixxerFoo thanks for the feedback. Oil cooler is definitely a must! I appreciate the video’s and the knowledge you share 🤘
That's why I love the Harley twins, they make the torque almost immediately and you can get some pretty good horsepower out of them too.
98ci with 585 cams and clean up the stock heads. We typically see 112hp
128flbs torque.
Lots of good info. The 88ci is definitely under rated! Thanks for the video. Fairly new subscriber, digging the content.
Thank you! The 88's are pretty inexpensive these days and if you do the work yourself you can have a very nice bike a lot cheaper than the new ones!
The number one thing that holds me back from going above a stage 2 on mine is I don't trust the stock crankshaft on these engines.
This is one of the reasons I keep thinking I need to find an Evo....better built bottom end....
@@dilo777 yeah having a twin cam 88 makes me miss my Evo sporty in some ways. I've had to do a ton of work on this twin cam and I never had to do anything on the sporty except change the oil and tires.
@@jamessouthworth1699 I have one left in my stable an 04 flh with 10.5 pistons ported big valve heads,577 redshift cams( gear drive ) & a 50 mm throttle body stock cam plate & bypass shimmed stock oil pump ( all stock bottom end ) last Dyno runs showed 103 HP & almost 40 k miles since build 78 k miles on bike still running strong & 50 MPG !
Hammer seems to be one of the best values that's flying under the radar.
Hammer knows there stuff and they keep their operating overhead low! They've expanded quite a bit the past few years.
I love my hammer 100 horsepower 1250 kit
You guys are doing anything with the Kranks it’s like he may be better materials titanium I don’t know just a question where is lightning then I bought a man to get them to rev
1999 to 2002 have excellent cranks and bottom ends, it's after 2003 the cranks were pressed and they did away with the tapered bearing bottom end.
Another awesome video...I'm not too sure my 04 TC88's crankshaft would be very happy with the upgrades though.
Reach out to Darkhorse Crankworks, they will make the perfect crankshaft for your particular application.
I would for sure check the runout on the crank before moving forward, it's worth the time to check it first. If the run out is pretty .003 or less I would feel good about putting some power in it. For sure don't beat on it all the time though, the best way though is get the crank done up though.
They do some damn good work!
Putting a 95 bolt on kit,is ok without touching the base(crankcase)before how many miles?
Will you be doing the 96 cc next?
I'm working on one for the 96 and 103, they are the same case bore so it really goes both ways on those motors.
You have any videos on the 106 stroker kits?
Actually working on some videos for that now, it's pretty surprising what they can do!
