    There are many ways to help a loved one who is struggling with a substance abuse problem, it's just that most people don't know how to approach the topic.

    I’m going to tell you something you probably don’t want to know. It is impossible to make an alcoholic stop drinking. Until they decide for themselves, there is literally nothing you can do.

    From personal experience everything this lady said was true! I naively approached my best friend head on about his drinking after trying to raise is subtly a few times and all he did was remove me from his life. I wish I listened to this video first...

      Well, he has lost a good friend in you. After trying to do it subtly and not working, then the only way is directly. If he chooses to leave, he leaves... his choice.

    How to pick the appropriate time? I have no idea when they're actually sober.

    • @HeyItsEmilyLove
      @HeyItsEmilyLove 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may not be able to do it when they’re sober, but some signs that an addict is currently sober can depend on what they’re addicted to. In general I’d say they will be slow. Not wanting to be active, maybe showing symptoms of the flu, such as lack of energy, sniffles, headache, lots of trips to the bathroom, upset stomach, etc. That’s most likely when they will be at their most irritable state though, so they may not want to listen. Good luck. I hope things are going well for you and them.
      Also, I’m not a drug addiction counselor or anything. I’m just speaking from what I’ve seen

    I actually did the complete opposite. A friend of mine actually admitted their problem, and that did not stop me from still being a friend. I spent the evening giving this person words of encouragement, love, showing that I will always be there, and pointing out the strengths, gifts, and talents that I really appreciate about this person. I’m checking in with them as much as possible and keeping this person in my thoughts and prayers.

    What if they don't think they have a school/workproblem and it has been going on for 3,5 years?

    • @PutTheShovelDown
      @PutTheShovelDown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not having all the details, this is a hard question to answer, but in general, I'd recommend that the family make sure they're not helping keep the denial going by fixing problems, etc... (ie financial, academic, relationship, etc...)

    Hi. How do I find people who don't want to use drugs or alcohol? Not people who are in rehab but people who choose sobriety from the start. I can't find them anywhere. On line and or in real life.

      I chosse to stay sober for alll of lockdown, then i could control how i drank after and i have only drank tree times now in over a years time. The control i now have is something i appreciate, as i used to drink every day even in school time. i drank 3-7 days a week for 3 years age 17-20 im now turning 22 soon

    Hi Love your site. I have a 17 yr old that is addicted to weed and also does vape, caffeine pills, alcohol,co2, cigarettes, has multiple bongs, junk food eater low self esteem, lost all his friends, no drivers license because can’t stop being high. Going to see a drug councillor. She saw him twice and the first time told my son your parents need to chill. He is looking for someone to tell him it’s not good you need to quit, or something like that. It all seems to be harm reduction. Do I communicate with this person ? Do I ask for a male councillor. Would that make a difference. We his parents don’t drink, use drugs, smoke at all. Happily married and stable. He is try to fill a void in his heart how can I help him?

      Rachel Martineau hey Rachel, . Most of the time when you send a young person to individual counseling, all they do is complain about their parents. They will tell part of the story to paint the picture the way they want, so they can get the counselor to validate what’s going on. I think you may be a good candidate to do our Invisible Intervention Program. It’s an online academy, filled with videos and information about how to get some one to move toward change and also how to handle all the roadblocks that will come your way. Here’s a link, to learn note about that if you’d like. www.invisibleintervention.com/invisible-intervention-online-course-sign-up/. Also, you can schedule phone coaching sessions with one of our team if you ever feel like you need some specific help making some decisions or holding boundaries, etc... I’ll get you the link for that as well😊
