I love the car (in spite of it's K car heritage) but that commercial was hilarious. "Oh my god. He's just repeating the phrase highway to the danger zone." ...and why did people in the '80s think that flashing between two videos was a cool effect? I mean, even when the technology to do that was new, it just emphasizes cheesiness.

Had a 87' Daytona Shelby Z as my daily driver for 9 years and was a great and dependable car. Have had several Daytonas over the decades starting with a new Daytona turbo back in 84' and currently have a 84' Daytona Turbo Z.

My 88 Shelby Z Turbo II was my first car. It never stranded me, was great in snow, could carry a couch jammed end-in into the back with the hatch open, and got excellent milage for its time, especially compared to the V8s it was offered against. The turbo came on strong at 2500rpm, and though I rarely raced anyone, I did tie up with my buddy in his 305 Camaro. It cornered really well. It was stiff as hell, but in the corners, it rewarded you. I wish I could have kept it, but parts got really hard to find.

While I won't say they were perfectly competitive with all F-body's all the time, I'll still cherish my Ws over 305 autos lol. And once I learned what a "wastegate" was, with the GM 3.8 TTs, too.
