You have some beautiful pictures here in your video, Cory. The one of the older lady is priceless. They are all wonderful. I can picture my husband Charlie during this time period when he served on the Ticonderoga. He was in many of these places in 1968 and 1969. It is fun seeing where he was. Charlie joined the Navy in 1965. Thank you for taking the time to put your pictures together and making this video.
I was aboard the Tico on this cruise. In fact I landed aboard on it's return from North Korea. I was an EM3 assigned to E-Division. Worked in distribution taking care of main generators and anything below decks, engine room, boilers etc.
I made this cruise (as part of the Helicopter Rescue Squadron). It was my second Westpac, and your pics brought back lots of memories. By the time our cruise was complete, I had made E-5, and life really got better; of course I had barely 1 year left on my Navy tour, and was finally discharged in Sept 1970. Thanks for posting these pics.
I was a postal clerk on that tour...and one day you guys gave me a ride on the helo as a thank you for getting the mail to you earlier than normal. I would imagine we knew each other. I was discharged May of 70.

VAW 111, Dets 20 (Bennington) & 34 (Oriskany) 68'-71', WestPac cruises. multiple traps on the Tico in warm-up exercises... more hours than i care to remember flying the Fudd (#011 in your photos.) quite an adventure, all told... 😉
Thanks for putting this together. She was my first ship, and this cruise I was working in UHF/VHF radio up on the 011 level. It was a one man operations so didn't get many opportunities to see the flight deck up close and personal. Great pictures, good memories. I remember looking down at the flight deck the day they had the 25th anniversary celebrations. Thanks again.
Cory, Excellent photos! I was aboard the Tico from 70-72 as a Radioman. We were just designated as CVS-14. I came aboard in time to head on a WESTPAC. We sailed into Pearl on Dec 7, 1970 and participated in the ceremonies. What an emotional experience. A WW2 carrier coming in to Pearl on Dec 7th!
Very nice. I was aboard the Tico for this cruise, in the VFP 63 Photo Recon detachment. These are great pictures, but I was saddened at the one of Commander Cates in his A4, who was killed in a crash ashore.
Mike brown thanks for your comment. I was in CIC, strike control, and had regular contact with CDR Gates. I think the whole ship was saddened at his passing on Naha.
Mike brown, I was on this cruise as well, VA 111 (Miramar). I worked the flight deck as an E5 AO, humping bombs and what not, and then doing the last weapons check before launch. If I remember correctly, Commander Cates was the Air Boss and was killed in a crash on Guam. Never met him, but heard his voice. He was well liked.

Didn't he crash towards the end of the cruise? I heard he crashed as he was landing on shore after leaving the ship for the last time. Or am i misremembering?
@@coryenglish4273 His log book shows last flight was March 14, 1969. Not sure if he was LCDR then or not. He was really spooked on a flight back from mission on the 4th. Had to fly into Da Nang, then back out to the Tico. Started flying FJ-3's off the Tico in '58. Had ejected out of an F-8 in '59. He was a mess by that time in his career. Stressed out, depressed, smoking pack and a half of Winston's. Got no help with aircraft issues about the squadron from higher ups. The picture of the A-3 at 8 seconds, in is the same one (615 and AMN3 J. E. Gross) that I have a picture of him standing in next to.
@@sonofaf-8driver475 You might know that CAG was killed landing his plane at Naha toward the end of our deployment. I have nothing but respect for what those in the air wing.
While these men served, Trump was a slum lord in New York bribing building inspectors and shaking down poor tenants. And he was so proud to avoid the draft with a deferment.

Ed your name is familiar, I went to train at I.B., then the rag and finally to HC1, and HC 7 north SAR, GOT OUT IN Feb 71,,

Very cool. My dad was flying EKA/KA-3's off the Tico at the same time with VAQ-130.
I probably spoke to your dad when I was working Strike Control in CIC.

I worked on that flight deck, in '62 and '63, 20 hours a day, 7 days a week.
