I was a brown shirt with VF-51 and did two tours in Vietnam aboard the Hancock between September 65 and 67. This video brought back great memories. Lots of long hours of hard work during flight ops and fun times in Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii...and who can forget the original Dizzyland of Alongapo City in the Philippines! Ahhh how I miss stopping for monkey meat as we rushed back to the ship! God bless all who served and are serving.

HANNA was a fantastic ship. Longest serving front line ESSEX carrier. To all of you who served aboard her (and other ships), I wasn't into superheroes growing up. I was into the ships of the United States Navy and their exploits. I truly look up to you guys who gave these vessels their souls. I sat around reading about ship histories and spent my lawn mowing money on model kits. At 36 years old, these habits have not changed. I'm a big fan. There is not a celebrity in the world that impresses me, but when I meet a guy that tells me he served on one of these old ships I am absolutely starstruck. Bless you guys for your courage and hard work!

Thank you so much for sharing the photos. My father was on the Hancock and another carrier (name has slipped my mind) as an ASM. In from '56 to '66. Was attached to VP-4. Dad lost a crap ton of pictures so thought I would go look. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video, my father served on the Hancock in 74-75, I went on a Tiger cruise from Hawaii during the 75 westpac, my parents lied about my age I was only 7 at the time you had to be 8. The Hornet CV-12 is parked where they used to have the Hancock, I've been down there several times to see our old house and going up to the Hornet does bring back memories of being a little kid either seeing your Dad leaving or waiting anxiously for him to return.

Hi - I served aboard the USS Hancock from 1968-1969. I was on the USS Oriskany 66-68 in A4 squadron VA-163. Thanks for sharing all your great photos which really bring back good West Pac memories. We have both been to the same liberty ports and it looks like you and your buddies did the same thing in port as my buddies and I did . . . ;-) Dennis D Lund

I was stationed aboard Hanna in V-3 Div. from early 1960 till March of 1962. I had a great time and met a lot of good guys. For your interest, we (our ship) arrived in Japan for r&r in ???? January 1962 or so. We were to be there for about a week. On day 1, I returned to the ship from liberty and it was a beehive of activity, nothing like I had ever seen before. Liberty was granted to the other half of the crew (port and starboard liberty) and on the morning of the 3rd. day we started steaming south. There was a lot of head scratching as to where we were going and why. After about 6 or so days of steaming south, early one morning we started launching airplanes loaded with bombs. As crew we had no idea who or what was being bombed or what was going on?? Now we know.

I was V-6 division yeoman and in charge of air department supply. I also took care of the log books for the (Cod) which is the ships only plane that was not a squadron plane. My duty in port was Captain's driver and I drove him in the black sedan with the flags on the front. It was kind of weird driving in Japan on the wrong side of the road and all the signs in Japanese. The Captain would say "Don't worry Trav. I''ll show you how to get there". Thanks for asking.

I was a Tin Can sailor in Nam doing plane guard for the Hancock , during a launch one of the planes afterburner never kicked in , from my view in the gun director , I watched it drop off the front. I thought for sure he was going to hit the water and from our position along side could not see directly in front of the Hancock. About a half mile in front I saw him gaining altitude.

My father, Jim Finley, was on the Hancock from 1955-1958, during the Korean War. He passed away many years ago, but he was in aviation ordinance most of the time. I still have one of his cruisebooks, onboard holiday dinner menus, etc.Check out the Hancock alumni pages to take a look....

    Hi Lloyd,
First thank you for your service brother and I am sorry to hear about your cancer problem.
Unfortunately I can't help you bucause the log books I kept were only for the plane itself in regards to having maintenance problems.
What you are looking for is a passenger list which I had nothing to do with and all that information stayed with the ship which has been scrapped.
I heard that the conning tower is in the Smithsonian in Wash. DC and you could check with them for help.
