  • This video is a bit different from my usual in that I'm trying out a technique that I haven't used before. In one of my classes we're looking at drawing on clay and one of the techniques we looked at was using clay inlay to draw on clay so I thought I'd test it out by drawing on a plate.
I drew the design with ribbon tools and curved knife tools first then painted on coloured decorating slips. I then let it dry before scraping the slips back to the surface.
This technique means you end up with a drawing in clay that has an smooth surface unlike sgraffito or slip trailing.
I'll post a photo of the finished plate on my social media and put a link in the comments once it's completed.

How long did you let this dry before scraping? Thank you!

I let it dry until the slip had solidified enough that I could scrape it without it smudging across the surface but not so dry that it cracks. I'd say around an hour or so if you don't use a hairdryer or something to speed things up 😊

Would this work with thick underglazes ? Or do you need it to be colored slip ? Thank you for sharing your talents..

It can work with underglazes but I would suggest finer lines so there's less to fill in.
