This is awesome Pete! Finally managed to play this smoothly. Figured I give it another go since I was already doing Rookery from the new album. Thanks for great teaching as always!
This is a picking pattern that is totally new to me, and this video has helped immensely, the song is at 126 BPM and I've gotten up to 110 so far just by practicing with this video! also the video layout, like, where you put the tab and the camera is perfect. Thanks a bunch man!
I haven't touched my guitar in over a decade, and I just wanted to let you know that this tutorial helped me come back with confidence. Thank you so much!
Great tutorial! well pllayed, no nonsense approach, i like it! :) maybe one thing that could help people is this: when playing this kind of very fast patterns, it helps immensely to 'prepare' the fingers/notes before having to play them i.e: on the start of the pattern, place your thumb, index and ringfinger on the strings together as to have index and ringfinger ready for their part 'waiting' for their turn. this also cleans up the pattern because you;re muting some notes, this way the melodies and voices within the pattern can be heard more clearly and it doesn't all become this sort of soup of sound. again: very nice work!
Agreed. "Reading" the strings with your fingers in the split seconds before plucking them is a very advanced skill that, to be honest, only really comes with a lot of practice. It's probably something better explained by a guitar teacher in a one to one lesson rather than something I try to incorporate into a song tutorial. I suppose I could do a video on the principles....🤔
Okay, so ive been practicing this since sunday and today i have the whole song made. The intro killed me like 10000 times but i am glad i made it. Again, thanks for this video :3
+DenebianHiC singing AND playing at the same time is the tricky bit. But it's so satisfying once you can do it, even if your singing voice isn't perfect. Once you can do that, writing your own songs is in reach!
+DenebianHiC go slowly and try to match the words to specific thumb or finger strokes. The guitar part needs to be played almost without thinking about it. It took me a while, but it gets easier and quicker as you learn more songs. Good luck!
+Bantham Legend you're right! The music is not as difficult as it seems! By the way I play it in CGCFGC with a capo on second fret and it work´s really well too.
Hi Pete I found your video and it's amazing, Thank you for sharing and I'll put my hands on my guitar to start playing this amazing song!!! Thanks a lot!!!
Hi Pete. Nice tutorial. One observation would be that from 17:33, BH will actually play ring finger on fret 2 of bottom E and then do the sus4 using index finger on fret 3 of B, sliding to fret 2 of B. It is a stretch (which you will see when he does it live) and maybe little finger would be better on the E but I guess he does it for strength as it's still doable with a bit of a wrist roll. Your way is certainly easier for a beginner or for v small hands, but the approach I describe is arguably more authentically BH. Just a thought - great vid 👍
You're probably right. I think I worked out a picking and fingering pattern by listening more than watching. It was a few years back now. Still a favourite to play 🤙🏻
New sub. Well done. Camera for guitar and tab placement made this very conducive to learning. Please adopt this moving forward, I’m sure it’ll be helpful :)
This is why I love YT! Thank you so much for an amazing tutorial! Just started practicing around 85 BPM, I’m reaching above my abilities a bit by trying to learn this song, but I also find that helps my progression/keeps me stimulated. Any advice on how to progress to 120 BPM (which I believe the song is in)? I.e. I currently like to anchor my pinky, but will that limit my speed? Thanks again!
After you told me to visit this video (instead of your original tutorial on it) it's the only thing I've been practicing. Like I said, I think I bit off more than I can chew... The technical side the picking mixed with the speed is just killing me. I can play the song through, but at a snails pace compared to you. The original has a tempo of around 127 ish and I can somewhat comfortably and accurately do it at 90 bpm. And that transition to the Mmm Mmm Mmm part is making me struggle. Practice, practice, practice!! Thank you for this great tutorial :)
Nathan Ellis it's all about repetition and muscle memory. If you can do 90bpm now, then in two weeks practising daily, you will get it up to speed. Best of luck :)
+TomMackas thanks. The strings are only a couple of days old, probably helps. And I have finally found some good EQ and compression settings that seem to produce a good recorded sound.
Hey man! Have you seen the Ben Howard video of she treats me well when he's in the Bataclan theatre in Paris? He does this version of that song which I haven't heard before, was wondering if you could work your magic and figure out that particular version because it sounds awesome!!Cheers dude
Stick with it and play it slowly until it's in muscle memory. I find 30 mins to an hour practice a day for several days to be a quicker learning process than hammering it for 4 hours straight. If the timing is an issue then try playing two thumbed notes at the beginning of the holding pattern so that there are no pauses, just to get the other 6 notes sorted.
Hey! Thank you so much for this tutorial, it helped me learned one of my favourite songs! Really loved the way you teach this! Here you can see my cover of it :) th-cam.com/video/F5ccgZTn35c/w-d-xo.html
Honestly I absolutely cannot thank you enough for this. Such an underrated TH-camr and an incredibly nice and humble person! Thanks again my guy
If it makes you feel better I've had 30% increase in channel engagement in the last month 📈. I'd upload more but I've got a bit of a cough...

Haha, it was new to me too, as is the guitar work in most of Ben's songs. Always happy to help another guitarist 🤙🏻🎸
I also noticed your Terry Pratchett shelf in the background there!
Fantastic lesson! I sent nearly all day trying to work out the finger style! Thanks so much!

Thanks you so much! This really helps me to appreciate even more by learning to play it. As usual, Thanks for the good work!

CGCFGC + capo 2nd = DADGAD :)
+Tobias Canales good spot! Usually he plays this on a smaller Martin, maybe an OM.
Such a joy thanks alot! Getting the picking pattern to work first made it much easier :)
You're welcome. It's a very satisfyingly tune to learn 🤙🏻
Thank you for one more! I miss Ben so much ...

Can you make a tutorial of "what the moon does"
Maybe, but I'm not reversing the string order! It would be an arrangement if I did a cover/tutorial
