- Let's talk about the music of Adventure Time/Fionna and Cake and how it has evolved over the past 13 years. MUSIC THEORY.

I think a major part of the sound shift in the fionna series is bc fionna was originally created by the person who made bee and puppycat. It's an entirely new world with characters that have wildly different personalities and backstories (it's not set in an apocalypse), so the sound is different, and the songs are more solid cause of the tighter rigid storyline. And it reminds me of b & p cuz the soundtrack is more indie and sparkly(?) compared to adventure time's acoustic and personal sound.
Wish they just kept it like Distant Lands but oh wellio
It appears that Natasha (B&P creator) did not work on the spin-off, she was just credited as the person who originally created the characters :(
Still, I'd love to see what it would be like if it had a little more of her comfy style of music and animation!!
What's wrong with ats sound? Is it acoustic?
@@СуперканалВладаis it artistic
but adventure time also has the indie and 8bit sounds atmosphere
There's one non diagetic song you missed that's much later in Adventure Time - Greatly Appreciated by Ashley Erikson (who did the show's credits theme). It plays over a montage of Martin and Minerva during Islands. I think what makes it work is that that montage is deliberately pretty mundane, telling the story of two humans falling in love, improving themselves for each other, starting a family - I think it works so well there because this montage is almost like a different show entirely from Adventure Time.
you're completely right, good catch!!
might include the Apple Pie song too from s2e8
it was only a few seconds long, but still maybe longer than Cave Song
@@CadenceHiraby Ashley Eriksson of LAKE. Colours by Ashley Eriksson, check it out!
honestly one of my favourite songs in the entire show

“transcribed by Cadence Hira
didn’t feel like transcribing this one just listen to it instead”
Transcribing at its finest
I love how the music, just like adventure time, is messy and choppy at first but ultimately fits together with time. It is a very aquired taste and the show backs this up as well. The first few episodes may seem annoying and plotless but if you give it enough time you can see how the puzzle pieces fit and you can look back and appreciate how it prepared you for the moment without you realizing
Idk if anyone mentioned already but the Fionna and Cake theme isn’t actually an original! It’s a remix / re-arrangement of To The Top by Too Many Zooz! I lost my mind when I first heard it in the show, I was so excited!!
Was going to say this too! Just one reason it's so different
No wonder when i first heard it, I immediately though of Too Many Zooz.
Tim Kiefer used the Absynth (sadly discontinued) and FM8 virtual instruments for the music of the original series of Adventure Time. Those were both by Native Instruments The percussion from "Slipping Pieces" come from Absynth. "So So Spice" features synths from Native Instruments' discontinued Pro-53 synthesizer, along with a marxophone. Tim Kiefer sometimes remixed his own tracks for later episodes.
*"I'm a buff baby that can dance like a man,*
*I can shake-a my fanny, I can shake-a my can*
*I'm a tough tootin' baby, I can punch-a your buns!*
*Punch-a your buns, I can Punch all your buns!*
*If you're an evil witch, I will* *punch you for fun!"*
Is one of the greatest and the most beautiful song from this series that I have ever shed me to tears more harder than me crying myself to sleep.
I've always LOVED Adventure Time's score. I don't know like any music theory terms so I don't really know how to describe it, but there's a lot of recurring tracks that play throughout the show if you listen closely. I always liked that aspect of the series because of how memorable the tracks were. I'm kind of surprised that wasn't mentioned tbh lol. Great analysis regardless!
You have good gravity falls vids btw
There is actually one motif that is used in the show! It's from the track "Simons Tale" from the episode Holly Jolly Secrets, and you can hear hints of it in the episodes Betty and Evergreen.
I see a Cadence Hira video, I click.
relatable
It's always the small channel that give so much effort
I want a music sheet on my wall, framed that says "I didn't feel like transcribing this just listen" with a single full rest bar that got me so bad.
also sick video, music theory is my jam.
something I love about these is that they sound very similar to Terraria ost
I wish they did crossover with that game even as comic😔
@@JakurtyKulginwell, al we got is minecraft
Ohh!!!that’s what it is! Thank you!
@@JakurtyKulgin At least we have the Adventure Time Wall of Flesh (S1E4) and the Squirrel Hook in Terraria (in the tree, part of the tree).
@@ghurcbghurcb squirrel hook is reference to AT?i didn't it know until now😅
I would LOVE a Steven Universe score analysis, this video was amazing and I’m honestly very impressed you could even transcribe that old school AT music, this was great content 10/10 ❤
You are unironically amazing. I am subscribing and turning on notifications. I love the refinement of the script and terminology.
Before I even start watching this video, I want to say that I’m happy it exists. Adventure Time music is so unique and every time I want to take inspiration from it, I feel bad for trying to touch it. It’s so pure and childlike in nature that purposefully replicating it always feels wrong. Im excited to hear what you have to say about it, and maybe I’ll come back after I’m finished 🥰
Absolutely fascinating stuff, I always knew that the music in adventure time was really whackey and unique instinctively and the more I learn about this series the more I become fascinated by the bizarre cocktail of just art that is this show , how it is like fallout meets D&D meets non-essentialism meets Buddhism meets doctor who meets all the random shit in your grandpa's attic meets all the things you thought were cool when you were 12 etc, the music just also being the voice actor's doing stuff that feel so first take, it's so humanistic such a pure form of art and just like the show is messy, real, fun weird, free and unlike anything out there.
finally someone who talked about this!! i was so mad about fiona and cakes lack of abstract and random music
You changed my life by pointing out the keyboard sounds at the beginning of the intro. I cannot believe I have listened to that opening literally hundreds of times and never noticed it lol
the leitmotif from everything in you 14:32 can also be heard whenever the portal opens 😭
do you also have a transcription of the bus stop scene? i noticed in the confession scene when Betty and Simon embrace, as the strings crescendo in the bgm there’s a soft piano accompaniment but in the alternate version the piano part is louder and is the same volume as the strings representing Simon and Betty were on equal footing 🫠
I love subtle musical touches like these!!! This is also exactly why I love the SU ost because you can interpret so much from some of the arrangements
this is super well made! I'm surprised your channel isn't bigger. Loved the video
First time watcher here. Amazing video! Love the music theory along with the symbolic analysis of the score. I’d love a Steven Universe one. Keep it up, you’re content is great.
thank you so much for making this
I live for that trumpet in the fionna and cake theme
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKING BOUT THIS, adventure time's soundtrack has been haunting me ever since the show was over. I've always praised the show's "vibe" and atmosphere but never quite understood what made it that good, until I stumbled upon an episode's soundtrack on spotify once. and it really is that. the weird instruments played at fun times, the oft pads when feelings get heavy. adventure time really knows what it's doing with its sound.
Very very glad to see someone talk about Adventure Time’s backing tracks. Because yes, the diagetic music is incredibly made, the background music has such a specific nostalgic feel that I fell in love with upon rewatching Adventure Time that Fionna and Cake sort of lacks. It’s in no way bad, but it’s certainly very different from the soundtrack of adventure time.
my favorite little bit of music from the entire show is that drum solo when finn tried to attack death in "death in bloom"
Finally someone shouted this out! I’m a producer and electronic music composer myself and I am watching again the whole series and each tiny piece of soundtrack that ever appears blows my head off!!!
This was such a great in-depth video, and I really enjoyed it music-wise and Adventure Time-wise!
LETS GO NEW CADENCE HIRA UPLOAD THIS GOES HARD GG
You had it at 'dreamscape.' Anyone who loves this show but is somehow unfamiliar with an indie game called Yume Nikki (Dream Diary, a game made by a single oddball on RPG Maker) would be well advised to look up that OST or play the game. It all sounds and feels like familiar parts playing unfamiliar roles in a waking dream, where the crossing over a single axis can lead from jaunt-in-the-park to hairs standing on your neck droning. And that's part of the Adventure Time appeal, in that you don't know where the ride is taking you, whether today is a celebration of friendship, a half- forgotten memory, a coming of age moment of bravery and truth to the Self, or a deep fear locked in your Vault. The music defies convention just as our own dreams do while our slumbering brains try to make sense of the day.
Thank you for making it easier to process how awesome the music is for AT and F&C.
The Fionna & Cake theme is rocking my whole year, too. The unskippable intro.
I am not complitely sure , but i felt like there was some kind of leitmotive to some of simon's apereances.
But i am not complitely sure.
Also prismo may have some deticated instruments or ritms. But i ait sure of it.
Great video .
You put into words and theory something that a lot of people could kinda feel but not understand. Thank you.
I think the soundtrack for Steven Universe and Adventure Time is some of the best music I could’ve grown up with
finally someone talks about the music of this show!
I'm currently doing a presentation on the music of adventure time for a class i am in and its so great to hear other peoples perspective on the music since there is very little to read about on line.
the way i characterize the music is like each piece is a petri dish of music ideas. your just seeing these microscopic musical ideas swimming around each other in odd ways and its so interesting. its such a beautiful musical language Casey and Tim have
She did a fucking fantastic job on the fionn & cake intro its still so AT to me
Wow she's back!
Bruh all these like 5k sub channels pump out BANGER adventure time videos🙌🤘
I love the soundtrack from the episode too young, especially the videogame scene where the hero goes upstairs to meet the princess, it's so passionate
An example of a leitmotif: Raine’s Rhapsody/Eda’s Requiem from The Owl House
the owl house is filled with motifs! the main theme is in like every cue lol
Finallyyyyyy!!!! Thanks for talking about AT bgm, I love it :D
first of all... nice video, Cadence. u totally managed to express the madness of AT's music.
btw, have u ever heard about Casey and Tim's project called "Casey James and The Staypuft Kid"?
they had 3 albums (two of them published in every streaming service... the third one is a christmas album, but is kinda hard to find...) and they also scored the soundtrack for the movie "Spork".
good video i enjoyed it
YOO NEW CADENCE VIDEO DROPPED
Question: At 12:36 it doesn't seem like the trumpet and sax parts are transposed. When transcribing a score for educational purpose, are parts from transposed instruments generally notated in concert pitch for the listener to analyze since it's not meant to be played?
@@DragonSlayerKillX Yeah generally I put everything in concert pitch and avoid double flats/sharps for ease of following along. My ass is not able to follow Bb instruments with C instruments in the same score lmao
@@CadenceHira that makes sense, thank you!
I know next to nothing about music theory but I love how the F&C intro sounds hype and energetic while being eerie and suspenseful. Definitely one of my favorites I've ever heard/seen.
AHHHH IM SO HAPPY YOU MENTIONED THE PETRIGROF LEITMOTIF
What an excellent look at the wonderful music of this fantastic series. Before I comment on something specific I deeply laughed at the choice to not transpose "So So Spice" but displaying that choice by still including the sheet music using a whole rest. Genuinely hilarious on so many levels.
One of the features of the original series musical style that I deeply appreciate is precisely the detail of it not sticking to a single genre both for mentioned reason of reflecting setting (whether an intentional, happy accident, or inbetween) AND because I myself tend to be pretty open to musical genres which likely the show had some hand in cultivating. I also realized that a lot of the music being diegetic felt positively reinforcing of my neurodivergent habit involving singing/scatting/beatboxing as part of stimming. Sometimes imitating or directly singing songs from the show (Dancing Bug trap beat? all the time) or riffing off them. The show had such a profound impact on me in every way it could. c:
Look to be honest, I only ever watched a adventure time for the little penguins that ice king had those little penguins were just so cute.
i love music bro,no matter how weird it sounds i luv it
My favourite song from AT is lost/love in the darkness, I just think it's perfect
I do want justice for NEPTR, so just this once, I will hit subscribe...
I was just listening to garden grape galaxy again, that track is so amazing!
GOD I love all of marceline`s songs
Adventure time and terraria music are unmatched in for the worlds they build
ive been stuck listening to the soundtrack on spotify lately and its insane how many of the songs are engrained in my mind since childhood. i still know every word to "best friends in the world" and the instrumental ones are great when im playing minecraft
10:28 After all those years of being a big fan you still surpised me with the "keyboard in the intro - fact"... I never knew :]
I love the weird sounds that play in the song where finn is building a tower
i’ve played trombone for 14 years, and was a music major for a semester in college. i decided that i didn’t want to pursue a career in music anymore, but loved learning music theory, as well as trying to analyze music. your channel is awesome and your approach to teaching music theory is excellent, thank you!
I wish I could find the full score for the MLP:FIM series. There are so many epic background tracks
I've never been a fan of the original AT score, but this is making me appreciate it at least. It's unusual, certainly, and it is a part of a show I love.
`great video im terrible with instruments , but this video is very interesting and cool
Were did you get the adventure time scores?! I've been searching for ages!
the sheet music I transcribed, the audio is from tim kiefer's soundcloud (staypuft)
The style of adventure time instrumentals remind me of the genres wonky and IDM(intelligent dance music which is arguably the stupidest genre name ever) which makes sense because an artist who makes music in these styles named flying lotus has credits in some songs featured in AT
0:11 the lick
I would like you to make a video on the owl house, amphibia, su, and adventure times music if you could! Lol mainly how the scoring are similar in two animated shows and the others are different but still come off good. I’m a huge fan of this stuff and I love learning about even the little details that go into making animated projects/cartoons! And the score/Ost is a HUGE part
dont stop posting please, thank you
I go to Berklee and one of our professors is Daedalus and he wrote a lot of this music!
I love the video!! This was super interesting, I’ll be around for the steven universe video lol!
Welcome back!
It reminds me of some of The Flaming Lips’ best work, like Yoshimi and The Soft Bulletin. Both have this beauty while having this weird feel to it.
one of my favorite things abt adventure time music is that the characters sound like normal people singing (except for maybe marceline, but even then she sings in a way that sounds very carefree, overusing vibratos and stuff), it makes it so interesting to listen to and so fun to sing, i wish this would become more common with cartoons, bc it sounds just wonderful to listen to a kid voice actor singing with their raw voice.
I only really appreciated the music of Adventure Time after playing the Card Wars mobile game as a child… that music booped so hard, and I was shocked to learn years later that it was just music ripped from the episode lol!
I love the when wedding bells episode song or the song that plays when they build a truck
(ManLorette party)
i never even noticed the everything in you motif in not myself
bossa nova bacon pancakes needs to be my ringtone NOW
holy hell u have so many banger vids
At this point, I'm kinda excited to hear more about Undertale and Steven Universe sound analysis.
Interesting videos! 😄
There’s one non-diegetic song in the show that was recontextualized as diegetic in the finale, which is the song played during the end credits. Naturally, there’s not an expectation that the opening and ending themes are diegetic. But the ending of the series connecting to the ending of every other episode, and with a song with such poignant and nostalgic lyrics, make for a powerful reification of the song.
HEY WAIT A MINUTE, I SEE WHAT YOU DID AT 17:27, THAT BACKING TRACK IS SADNESS AND SORROW FROM NARUTO BUT IN A BOSSA NOVA DISGUISE!!!! HEY!!!! I SEE YOU!!!!
to non musical nerd like me, hearing you talks about musical theory, sounds like a madman tryna explain how the worlds function, but in a good way, eventhough i dont understand what you are talking about but i kind of agree about what you are talking
ive always loved the background music in this show and now hearing it clearly is just showing me how much it affected my music taste now 😭
Dang, your last post was a year ago but you have lot of views and subscriber 😭
Also i love you genius
A bit you probably should have mentioned. The theme for Fionna and Cake is heavily based on "To the Top" by Too Many Zooz.

BMO the adorable robot is awesome
Edit: red is sus
I just found out theres a follow up to my favorite show 😱
Hey idk shit about how music works, but I love adventure time. Great video
Hmmm, I wonder why this title felt so familiar......
oh wait, it's the Never Ever series BY EMPLEMON!!!
(downward spiral intensifies)
Something I'd like to point out is that the opening either is, or is incredibly similar too the song Too the Top by Too Many Zoozs
2:28 sounds like simon hired the hitman from cruelty squad lmao
I f you want to understand music theory on a deeper level, highly recommend listening to Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor by Frederic Chopin and think about someone that died in you life you were close to. Chopin wrote the piece after his wife passed away and putting your mind in a similar state brings out the emotions on the piano and genuinely brought me to tears thinking of my Grandfather who passed away when I was young but the bond was strong. Cried in a Band class full of students and so did many others. Truly I wouldn't be in love with producing and music as much as I am without this piece. Always on my top 5 favorite pieces of music ever composed, under MF DOOM of course!
The bacon pancakes outro song sounds like the guitar in the background is playing Mother 3 music
I felt so proud of myself when I knew which song was going to be semi-diegetic. I'm a little genius :)
I personally think Adventure Times writing team was a giant blunt rotation
great stuff
God I love adventure time music
There will be
justice for neptrrrrr!!!!
It’s still where we left it, but, everything changes.
